Well, since practically everyone who owns a Wii will probably be picking this up tomorrow, I fiugred I'd get the thread started.
And we have one review in so far: IGN gives it a 9.5
The Wii finally has a killer app. (EDIT: Well... One. SMG is next)

9.5? Wow. Maybe Nintendo is back in the payola business. A 9.5 on IGN is a pretty rare occurrence.

Just got a Wii last week as a gift and 2 games(Zelda and Madden) and have a gamecard for a free game still. Wonder if this it worth it

Looking pretty good.
As usual - Gamespot gives it the lowest score.. An 8.5, and Nintendo Power typically gives their own game a perfect score. I can't take a score from Nintendo Power seriously.... It's like asking Van Gough to critique one of his own paintings. Of course he's gonna say it's a masterpiece - he made it!

"It is a hardcore game through and through. You will get your ass kicked by bosses. You will be stumped by the sometimes complex, but never overbearing, exploration. ... But you will love it. Your persistence will be rewarded. You will learn to juggle your abilities and skills. You will explore ancient worlds and pirate-infested bases. You will strive to acquire those secrets and raise your completion percentage. If you read Shacknews, this is in all likelihood the Wii game you have been waiting for."
Excellent!

"...Retro has set the bar, and your games will be judged against this one. On the "Advanced" setting, which most readers of this site are advised to use, movement and aiming with the Wii remote is fluid and natural.
It takes a fair amount of time to use it with great skill, but a basic competency is gained very quickly. Gone is the wild flailing of games such as Red Steel. The controls retain Prime's ability to lock the camera onto an enemy, but also allow the player to point the reticule independently. This inventive optional mechanic bridges old and new, adding a great deal of elegance to the controls without sacrificing the practical convenience of locking on..."

I was worried about using the wii's remote, but it sounds okay. Everything I've read about this game sounds fantastic; I just hope my expectations aren't set too high. Should be a great one.

I just picked up Metroid at Best Buy during lunch. Between the Wii game shelves and the display, I'd estimate they had 200+ copies. I've never seen so many copies of a game on release day. Possibly Madden (if you combined all console versions) or Pokemon. Nobody should have trouble picking this up today.

Yeap I got my copy from one of my many local EB/GS nearby while saving $5 in the process with that email coupon that has been floating about.
The graphics are improved over the previous Cube MP titles. I would say we have finally seen a game on the Wii that has the proposed (XBOX) capable graphics. The bloom lighting used in this is also easily some of the best I've seen used on any other console or PC game. I also like how Samus can interact with NPCs that aren't already dead as in most of the previous MP games. I do like the way the game controls overall, but I have a minor quibble regarding the control. The default control scheme is excellent, but I really wish I could remap the jump to the A button and the shooting to the B button. These are reversed in the actual game and I have a hard time remembering to press B to jump when A feels more natural for this.
However, unlike IGN's reviewers, I don't have any trouble at all getting Samus in Morphball mode to jump by flicking the Wii remote. Even fairly small movements create the jump easily. Its much easier to get that initial jump from using the remote instead of the bombs IMO.
There is also a TON of stuff to scan and just like previous Metroid games...you can scan stuff once, and then come back and scan again because suddenly the power was taken offline to that device or it was turned on..etc. Basically a lot of the stuff you scan may have to be scanned in twice during play if you're going for the completion bit.
I'm very impressed so far...just need to get my receiver replaced as the right channel is starting to go staticy and it isn't the speaker...ugh. Oh well...How I loved thee my dear Onkyo from 1983...hehe...

You can remap the jump/fire to A and B. Press 1 and then go into the options on the bottom (the little wrench icon on the bottom left). There is a setting to switch them.

They probably wanted the "actions" and shooting to go together to make it easier for first timers.
I don't know.. that kind of threw me off a bit at first too, but then I found the control scheme options.
It's a pretty cool game so far. I wasn't much of a fan for the first two, but the control of this one is kind of hard to pass up. I didn't play much, but just got into the first combat action.
I must say though, it looks pretty and it does indeed look like the rumored "upgraded xbox" graphics quality. I wonder if it had to do with the update before starting the game?

To anybody on the fence about this, get the damn game. The control is PERFECT on this game and Retro has set a high standard for wii fps style games (although medal of honor: vanguard is high up there in my opinion). The graphics are the best the wii has delivered so far (don't think it was the first to excede Xbox level graphics but its a noticable difference with MP3).
Really, Retro has impressed me with their first 2 Metroid efforts and this 3rd itteration in the console Prime series has cemented my faith in their abilities.
In short, buy the fucking game assholes.

Any DP users try both normal and advanced yet?

I have tried both.. I don't see a difference in them. I think Advanced is slightly faster at turning and looking around... but that's the only difference I noticed.

I have so far only played about an hour and a half or so into MP3, but it's for sure a glimpse of what Heaven is like :D
Man, everything is so awesome in the game. The new controls are all perfectly done. Everything moves, switches, and controls great. I love the new way to switch to the Scan Visor. It allows for quicker scanning now, in my opinion. I also love being able to be inside of Samus' ship.
I remember telling my wife about 2 years ago that I was going to be buying a "Revolution" just so that I could get Metroid Prime 3. Up until today this was still the case. I wanted a Nintendo Wii just for MP3. It didn't let me down any :D

It's a shame that many could dismiss this game based upon a disdain for Echoes, or even general apathy about the series. I have both Prime and Echoes, and haven't finished either of them, mostly due to frustration with the controls. Initially, I understood why Nintendo made it play like GoldenEye with a lock-on function, but the harder the game got, the more frustrating it was to constantly fight with the controls. You really need to be locked on to something to hit it or dodge its incoming fire. The exploration has always been the draw, yes, but the shooting has always felt like it was intentionally broken to make the game different from most run of the mill FPS's.
The controls in Metroid Prime 3 are the answer. It falls closer to mouse/keyboard than dual analog in the spectrum of FPS control options, which means it's excellent. The Wii remote is incredible for FPS look. It makes me wish I could play Halo with it (which Prime 3 strangely feels like at times). The additional segments that require you to use the remote as your hand are very cool as well. Adds to the immersion.
I'm not that far into the game as of yet, and I might go suffer through the first two first, but I definitely have played enough that can I endorse the excellence of this game. A must have. The only negative I can find is the lack of multiplayer, which Metroid was never about, but these controls scream for it.
Metroid Prime 3 is the first truly great Wii game since launch. Can't wait for Galaxy!

Metroid Prime 3 is an excellent game. I'm 2 ½ hours into it and have loved every minute so far.
First off the IGN reviewers are right on the money with the control scheme. Immediately switch it to "Advanced". I don't think I would've normally done this, but it pays off. The control of this game is amazing and what sets it apart from the first two MP's. The Wii controller has redeemed itself in my eyes. The "gimmicks" are actually well done and most of all fun (gasp). I can't imagine playing this game with a regular controller (I also can't believe I'm saying it either).
So much fun. The Wii needed a game like this (in my eyes). A game that is built 100% around the Wiimote and nunchuck. I want to point out that when I describe the incredible control, I'm doing it with no hyperbole...it's really that damn good.

This is the best controlling first person game I've ever played....by far. I'm four and a half hours into the game so far, and the entire experience has been incredible. Everyone with a Wii needs to buy this immediately.
And while Echoes' multiplayer somewhat sucked, I think this game could have pulled it off quite nicely. We NEED a multiplayer shooter with these controls!

Hearing that control has been improved makes me happy. I loved the previous Prime games, however I would get to a point where I couldn't beat the boss due to having to switch visors while locking/dodging/jumping and firing. I wen't from giving up on the Prime games to looking forward to this one.

For those that don't have it and want a copy, you may wanna check your local Sam Goody / FYE. Seems they have a $10 mail in rebate with the game and with the 10% discount card you can pick it up for about $35. Kinda hard to pass up on that offer after the reviews it has been getting.

Samus, call me next time you're going to appear in a side scroller.
I'm only about half an hour into the game (I just defeated the first boss, if you can call him that, he was very easy, I guess I'd call him a miniboss) and these are my thoughts so far:
The gameplay is decent. So far I'd put it closer to an 8/10 rather than a 9/10. If you liked the cube versions then you'll absolutely love this. If you didn't like the cube version, you won't like this. If you're into FPS games, you'll like it. If not, this isn't going to change your mind.
Even if you are into FPS games, you might want to wait for it to become a players choice before picking this up. I paid full price and if given the opportunity, would wait for a price drop (but I'm not really a big FPS gamer).
Keep in mind I'm only half an hour into the game, so my opinions aren't finalized. However, I just bought it, played it for half an hour, and am left with a "meh" feeling sufficient enough that I am now watching TV. I'll likely play it again tomorrow.

Well, I must really suck because I struggled with the first mini-boss. I actually liked the fact that there is a challenge early on. So far the rest of the normal enemies are way too easy but I'm sure they'll get harder as the game goes on. I have to say that the exploring is really fun in this game. I have gotten stumped a couple of times and usually that frustrates me but for some reason running back and forth has been great. I hate console FPS's because I suck at dual analog but this game feels so natural.
I would say that the graphics are great but not realistic looking. None of the enemies look very detailed and the general that you meet at the beginning looks like he came out of Metroid 64.

While I agree with you that the graphics aren't breathtaking, I wouldn't give it that low-blow ;) Metroid Prime had excellent graphics for the cube. These look about the same, just a little better. Not the jump in quality I was hoping for, but definitely a little better than MP 1 or 2, and nothing like an n64 game.

This title was made for the Wii. It is one of the first titles that does not have the Wii functionality that feels "tacked on" at the end of production. The games graphics are pretty good, controlls feel natural. I am very impressed with this one. Good Job Nintendo. Bravo.

I just got the game yesterday myself. So far I love it. I'm usually not that big in to FPS games, but Metroid Prime has always been more Metroid than FPS.
I really liked the first one, but I really didn't like Echoes, despite it having the coolest morphing ball segments. I hated having to jump from crystal to crystal; it limited your ability to explore and took up way too much of the game. Plus, it just had this feel of chaos--the music and sound effects were very grating, and I actually felt it was somewhat of a step down in graphics compared the first game--not in a technical sense; I just didn't care for the art in general.
Anyway, all those issues seem to fixed in 3. I'm just as much in love with it as I was with the first Metroid Prime, and the new wiimote capabilities are really quite fun. Ripping the blast shields off doors is fun!!! I also love being able to interact with everything inside Samus' ship and having to manually enter passcodes, etc. It adds a little more depth to the game, and kind of reminds me of Space Quest a little bit.
Anyway, if you've got a Wii, you should probably pick this up, even if you felt burnt by Echoes.

This game is everything I hated about Prime 2, magnified.
The story is incredibly lame. I'm not sure why Retro wanted to turn the Metroid universe into a Saturday morning action cartoon (or a poor man's Halo, if you want to be generous)... but all of the atmosphere of Metroid 1 through Prime 1 is long gone.
Exploration is also pretty limited (relatively speaking), but I guess the action part of it still plays ok.
Oh well. I still have a few GC games I can play on my Wii until Mario gets here.

I agree - while I am enjoying this game, it has completely lost it's feel from the 2-D incarnations. And being in 3-D, it makes the backtracking you sometimes have to do, a little more tedoius.
*MINOR SPOILER*
But IMO, Meta Kraid was a f'ing awesone boss battle, I must admit.

This game is everything I hated about Prime 2, magnified. That's interesting because I feel almost exactly the opposite. To me MP3 fixes everything I didn't like about MP1&2, and kept the things I loved. Please note, I'm not saying you're *wrong*, everyone's entitled to their own opinion.
For me, I like that you can get from area to area quickly, so exploring is much less tedious. The save points are placed very well. And most importantly, the game hasn't gotten frustrating yet (I'm only about 6 hours in), but is still challenging. I had to fight the final boss of Bryyo a couple times, and the last battle was very long (I dipped well below 100 health a few times), but it never felt frustrating. I've gotten stuck on a few puzzles, but was always able to figure it out after a little time, without resorting to GameFaqs. i think they hit a perfect balance. I agree the story isn't *great* but I enjoy the space opera type of thing, so I think it works well enough. Just my 2c.

I got a chance to rent it over the weekend. I played it for about a total of three hours, then took it out of the Wii and put it back in its case to be returned early.
Basically, the game didn't rope me in. I just didn't care about having to fix Aurora Units or working with other Hunters and other what nots. I tried going in with an open mind but I seem to have difficulty getting into the Metroid Prime series. The first I literally had to force myself to forge on, just to see what all the hub bub was. After getting the Space Jump things changed for the better and it finished off pretty well. MP2 just felt like work and after nine hours I couldn't stand playing it anymore. MP3 to me seems like a combo of a poor man's Halo that now has "30% more Metroid!" in it. The early puzzles (like the morph ball segments on the first planet and Bryyo) to me seemed a bit tacked on, making me wonder "why is this here? Did the inhabitants roll into balls to open up segments of their domain?"
Bottom line was it just wasn't fun for me.
