It feels like there has been an onslaught of retro-gaming related movies lately, right? We've had King of Kong (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/02/joystiq-review-the-king-of-kong-film/), andChasing Ghosts (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/20/joystiq-exclusive-chasing-ghosts-film-review-and-trailer/) this year already. Now ... you've got Press Start (http://www.pressstartmovie.com/) coming at you. However, this isn't some gaming documentary. Oh no, this film isn't content to just interview gamers from yesteryear or wax poetic about Donkey Kong high scores. This one goes straight for your nostalgia core and kicks it into hypderdrive.

"Zack Nimbus (Joshua Stafford) is a typical suburban youth and volunteer monster exterminator living peacefully in a videogame world. It's a realm where people actually do cross rivers by jumping across alligators' heads (or being chomped to death in the attempt) and where injuries can be cured by eating food found laying about in old hallways. Here, the pleasant days are ending due to world conquest by the unspeakably evil but insecure and telephone-addicted wizard, Count Nefarious Vile (Peter Davis).

Zack soon finds himself recruited by battle-hardened space soldier Sam (Lauren Chambers) and enthusiastically bad-tempered ninja Lin-Ku (Al Morrison) to join a last desperate attempt to thwart Vile's imminent victory. But not before lampooning every videogame convention that comes their way."

They're even promising that some "guest stars" will make an appearance, including a mustachioed plumber (http://www.joystiq.com/photos/press-start/372940/) that you might know. Check out the trailer after the break, and see what life is like with "no continues."

Yeah, it sounds a lot like College Saga.

Have you seen College Saga? Because College Saga is FREAKING AWESOME.
http://www.collegesaga.com/

It also sounds not unlike River City Rumble, but that one's not free.

I have a feeling this is going to become a cult classic. It's pretty damned funny and it gives a major nod to almost all of the video game universe in it's own humorous way.

Off the top of my head, I would have to say it lampoons about 10+ different game franchises/situations within the first 5 minutes of the movie, not to mention the really 'deep' video game jokes/gags that only true Video Gamers would know the reference to.

Take this scene for instance....

Sam: (silent and chained up to a wall, clad in nothing but a "Space Suit Bikini")

Count Vile: Thank you, Mr. Bailey.

Man in coveralls: (folding up Sam's Space Suit and begins to take it away) No problem. (Before leaving, he stops right near the camera so you can see the nametag on his coveralls, which says "Justin").

I couldn't stop laughing for a good minute or so after seeing that particular scene, because of the history of that legendary code that appeared in Nintendo Power magazine so long ago.

I'm telling you guys, this movie is hilarious and is DEFINITELY for us Video Game Fans.
