These 2 titles worth checking out?

Battle of Olympus is one of my favorite NES games ever. If you liked Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, and like Greek Mythology, this is a great adventure title that you shouldn't miss. Also, it can get pretty frustrating at times, but is worth the time spent.

You bet your ass they are. For Faxanadu, make sure you're playing in an emulator with save states, though. The font used for the password system is ugly as hell and it's easy to write it down wrong, losing all of your progress :(

Playing them both on NesterDC. Screw password systems.

Yes! Play those suckers till yer stupid! Easily some of the best NES action you can find. I played those games through multiple times back in the day, and loved every minute of it.

I'm quite enjoying Olympus right now actually. Already have the staff, need to go and get fire for it. Kinda easy to get lost sometimes though, but I do enjoy the mix of Zelda II with Greek mythology. Lamia was tough.

I'm having fun with both games! Battle of Olympus I'm up to Argos, Faxanadu I'm getting to the Tower of Trunk (is that where I fight this dwarf?).

Great, mantras aren't coming in fully = no password save and no starting golds. Crap.

I'm up to collecting the Salender Skins and getting the 3 Hearts, already have the Divine Sword too (Got it before fighting the Siren and the 3 witches).

Holy crap is Phthia a pain!

I've loved Battle of Olympus since I was a child, but I think I have yet to enter a correct password in nearly twenty years of playing the game. Heck, I even quadruple-check what I've written and the game STILL doesn't accept my entry.

Faxanadu:

Tower of Trunk? No, you've got a long way ahead. You haven't really gotten anywhere until you hit the mist world (an area smothered with fog). In the area you're playing through, you'll probably find a large, blue bat-like "boss" but again, you've still got a ways to go it sounds like. He isn't a major boss and you'll see him at least a couple more times.

I beat the drawf....thing, in the tower. Gotta spend time now building up my cash for that shield and magic now, whee.

Olympus I've made some real progress- got the 20 skins, need to find my way to the labyrinth now (or go back to that pain in the ass area with the centaur).

Do you mean the Magic Shield and Death in that shop early in the game?
My advice is: don't buy it. You don't really need it at this part of the game (actually you don't need Death magic at all, Deluge #1!). And if you want to buy the stuff, you can get it cheaper later in the game.

Both these games are excellent and are shadowed by other classics Nintendo made. Both deserve a play through.

I just got the Magic Shield. Somehow I found a 2nd Mattock in the tower also. Olympus I'm heading to Crete....how bad is it?

Hope you like mazes and warrior women! If you made it through Phthia easily (damn monkeys and birds!) you shouldn't have too much of a problem!

Phthia is a total pain in my ass. I was lucky to get the last sword and ambrosia there and make it back alive. I hate the mazes in this game. Just got the 2nd Heart too. How the heck do I destroy the Minotaur's barrier?

Never tried Battle of Olympus, but Faxanadu is a great game. It can definitely pose a challenge, but it's solid front to end.

Those are among the top 5 action RPGs on the NES. Two others are Zelda II and Crystalis.

Does Startropics count on that list? I love me some Startropics. And maybe Ufouria.

I really need to play though all of these games...

the first heart is the proof of your courage
the second is to remove the barrier
and the third is the start of a whole new ordeal.

Ufouria is awesome, but not a RPG or an action RPG.

Startropics? You know, I never played it. Strange, but true. I heard it was kinda average by a couple people. Were they wrong?

star tropics was an interesting mix of zelda and "insert frustrating puzzle game here" the only thing that I think held them back from being awesome is a pretty poor control system, but otherwise they are worth checking out.

Faxandadu I'm finally up to the town of Conflate!

Just a sneak preview as you get closer to finishing.

In Faxanadu, the last boss is a lot easier than the second-to-last boss who comes before him. Just my opinion.

I like Battle, though not good at it. Faxanadu is a cool game but the aweful control and poor collision detection kill it for me.

Well, I'll agree with you there. On occasion, the collision detection of Faxanadu reminds me a little of Athena (also on NES). Hit an enemy in just the right (or wrong) place, sometimes while jumping, and you can go from a full life bar to dead in what seems like half a second.

Agreed. The bad hit detection's cost me many a game. Thank goodness for save states sometimes. Update on progress: I have the Battle Helmet and Battle Suit and the Magic Rod. Got the Ring of Dworf (love the spelling).

Beat Faxanadu tonight. Final boss was easier then fighting the other boss for the Dragon Slayer sword! Nice ending too, one the better NES game endings I've seen in some time. :)

Startropics is a really neat game. It's somehow both somewhat derivative of several classic games yet very original in it's own way. It even had a note inside the game box you had to splash water on to continue in the game, sorta like the various old PC anti-piracy methods. Oddly enough, Japan never got a famicom version, but did get a GBA version awhile back. There's also a sequel with different control system if you can't stand the first. But personally, I think the grid-based jumping adds a level of strategy and thinking ahead instead of standard platformy twichiness.

I'm not a fan of Star Tropics. The jumps are way too hard for me :)

Nice to hear some people are still discovering classics like Battle of Olympus though. I love to hear stories like this of people's progress.
