Do you feel that the quality of rumble feedback has improved much since it was introduced on the N64? I find that I don't usually even notice the rumble on most newer games. I know that the newer consoles have an extra motor, but other than that, I don't think it's really evolved much. I'd love to see a greater variation of rumble types, and perhaps some subtle force feedback (which of course could be turned off if you were going for the Madden championship or something). I'm sure something more could be implemented for a reasonable amount of money with today's technology.

Also, what games do you feel utilize rumble the best?

Final Fantasy VIII & Final Fantasy XII both use the rumble feature extremely well.

Star Fox 64. It's the game that the Rumble Pak was packaged with, and I can't play it without rumble. I thought Nintendo did a really good job, what with it being first time and all. Also Zelda: OoT used the Pak well, once you found it in-game.

Metal Gear Solid on the PSX is a good example, with the Psycho Mantis sequence and your pad moving across the floor.

Unfortunately I've never played either. Can you tell me what it does to stand out?

Both the action time and intensity of the rumble are spot on.

For example in FFXII, when a strong ice spell is building up, you'll get a rumble that matches the build up. When the spell hits, the controller will mimic the boom and fade out perfectly.

Square really are masters at implementing rumble.

If you play some sports games, football games more so than other sports games. Those games use the rumble well. I don't think outside of tecmo, that I could play a modern console football game without rumble.

I forget what it's called, and what company makes it, but there is a much more interactive rumble type feature. It involves a vest and gloves or maybe armpads I believe. Basically it acts as a full body rumble pack. Get tackled in Madden? Feel the impact on your chest. Parry someone's attack in Twilight Princess? Feel the recoil in your hands. I'm not sure what games they've made it compatible with or how much it costs but it looked quite interesting.

^ Wouldn't a game need to be specifically designed with that pheripheral in mind for it to be able to reproduce area-specific rumble (i.e. only in the hands/chest, etc)? I suspect it can only be fully compatible with a very limited range of titles, the rest would just produce an all-over rumble effect.

It's a good idea and would certainly make a game more immersive. I dunno if I would want to "dress up" in all that gear for every game, though.
