I have always been a fan of fighting games and I know the N64 doesn't have a whole lot of those but I'd like to know which ones people consider the best ones for it?

My N64 has been piling dust for way too long... time to give it a go! :)

Hmm, I'm a fan of claymation and I must say I enjoy a good game of Clayfighter 64, or if you can find one, Clayfighter 63 1/3 Sculptor's Cut.

My friend had A 64 and a bunch of fighters that we would play for hours on the weekends. Aside from Mortal Kombat Trilogy (that was also on Sega Saturn and PS One) the N64 had some good exclusives. Both Killer Instinct Gold and Mace: Tha Dark Age were great. Mace had some awesome secret characters and I highly recommend either of the two. There was also Dark Rift. It was one of the 64's first good 3d fighters. But if you take any advice let it be this; By all means stay away from Dual Heroes!!! That game was terrible!! Had solid graphics I thought for the time but it was a horrible, horrible fighter.

SMASH BROTHERS. Also, KI Gold is good.

Stay far away from War Gods.

Aside from Super Smash Bros., there is absolutely no fighting game worth owning on the N64.

I agree. The game got mediocre reviews, but I thought it was great.

Other good ones are: Smash Bros. (obvious), Mace: The Dark Age, Killer Instinct Gold, and Bio Freaks (in which you could dismember your opponnents limbs.)

I also thought that Clayfighter Sculptor's Cut was an excellent game. 63 1/3 is also nice, but Sculptor's Cut perfected the formula.

Flying Dragon is also a good game. It feels stiff, but it's still fun to play. It's actually two games in one. One of them is a normal fighting game, and the other looks like Virtua Fighter Kids.

O Sumo 64 is awesome. Especially the between-rounds bonus games.

If you're wanting fighting games, the N64 really isn't the console you want.

Education is fundamental. Silly blanket statments are not.

MK4 is pretty good
KI Gold is great if you like that combo-style of fighting
Mace plays decently and looks GREAT while doing it
Ready to Rumble 1 and 2 are cool

The N64 wrestling games were the best from the PS1/Saturn/N64 era

Imports are were the N64 gets some damn decent games with fighting in mind

Rugakids (true 2-D fighting)
Custom Robo 1 & 2
Virtua Pro Wrestling 1 & 2
Last legion UX is a very good Virtual On clone... check it here.

I really enjoyed Killer Instinct Gold as well. I liked BioFreaks in the arcade, and the n64 port was decent if somewhat unspectacular. Kind of a weird game, though, fighting game purists probably wouldn't go for it. It's been a long time since I played it, so I can't say how well it has or hasn't held up.

Well ok if you consider things like Clayfighters, Killer Instinct, & MK good fighting games, I don't have much to add ;p

Seriously though, N64 is just about as bad a system as you can get for fighting games, and that is my point.

I'll probably be in the minority but I liked Killer Instinct better on the SNES

I think Rakuga Kids is really the only 2D fighter on the N64 that's very good. It is surprisingly good for a totaly no name fighter. I actually haven't played it a whole lot, so I don't totally know the ins and outs of the system, but it seems to play quite a bit like the Street Fighter Alpha series. Has really cool art, too, in my opinion.

Killer Inctinct Gold is okay, too, I guess, if you like that sort of thing. For a shallow mash fest, though, Smash Bros is better anyway.

No one for Fighter's Destiny 1 or 2? Decent mechanics, new concept, and so-so look. I liked both despite the oddball characters.

Yeah was gonna chip in with FD1. That, Smash Bros and Rakuga Kids are about the best three on the N64 imo.

Also, though they may not fit into what you're looking for, THQ's wrestling titles were outstanding. No Mercy is still the best wrestling game out there IMO.

Wow... Thanks for the help everyone :)

Also, was there ever an arcade stick made for the N64? I am not aware of such a thing being made for the system.

There's actually a pretty nice one from Interact called the Arcade Shark. Well, it's not that nice really. I mean it doesn't use arcade parts or anything like the DC stick does. In fact, it doesn't even use arcade-style technology, it's just an enlarged pad, similar to older arcade sticks on the NES and Genesis. But the joystick still manages to have a very good feel, though the buttons are weaker.

The coolest thing about it is that it has both the digital and analog sticks on it just like a real controller, so it's absolutely perfect for Bangaioh and Robotron (it only comes with one physical stick, though, which you have to screw into either the analog or digital mechanism, so you have to get an extra one if you want to use it like that).

That was to me one of the worst games for 64 period. 2nd to superman. The playstation was much much better

The N64 was just a flat out Terrible system for fighters for both 3-D and ESPECIALLY 2-D.

Good: Smash Bros.64

other decent fighters: MK Trilogy although better on both the Saturn and PSone and Killer Instinct GOLD.

I agree with a previous statement that Killer Instinct was better on the Snes than the N64 and as big of a Killer Instinct fan that I am KI on the N64 was just NOT what was expected of the mighty Ultraaaaa64! but then again it was false advertising by Nintendo back in the day for those that remember the arcade scene back then.

I do know the N64 is not the best system for fighters (PSX & Saturn being superior in that regard)but I was curious to know what was the best out of what was available for it. I see why they didn't get a decent Arcade Stick :)

KI on SNES is better? Guess I'll have to get that one after all!

Thanks for all your help everyone. It is appreciated.

KI on SNES is better?

I don't think so. Killer Instinct was an impressive SNES game when it was released, but Killer Instinct Gold for the Nintendo 64 is better in every way.

Good:

Killer Instinct Gold (pretty close to arcade perfect, sans FMV; very smooth; impressive framerate; excellent music)
Mortal Kombat 4 (practically arcade perfect; very smooth; impressive graphics, lighting, and framerate)
Mace: The Dark Age (pretty close to arcade perfect; good graphics, but a little sluggish at times)
Super Smash Bros. (a fun twist on the genre; fight as various Nintendo characters; pretty good graphics)

Decent:

Mortal Kombat Trilogy (if you like the 2D Mortal Kombat games, you'll love it)
Deadly Arts (a generic, Japanese fighting game; players can create their own fighters)
Fighter's Destiny (generic, but playable; pretty good graphics)
Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. (a somewhat interesting twist on the genre; good graphics)
War Gods (it isn't great, but it isn't as bad as most people believe; pretty good graphics; plays exactly like a 3D version of Mortal Kombat)
Tom and Jerry: Fists of Furry (gameplay is fairly similar to Power Stone; decent cartoony graphics; simple fighting engine geared toward younger players)
Xena: Warrior Princess- The Talisman of Fate (pretty good gameplay; good graphics, but the animations can be a little stiff; up to four players can fight simultaneously)

Horrible Wastes of Money:

Dual Heroes (a Power Rangers rip-off; bad graphics and animations; an example of early 3D graphics and gameplay at its worst)
Dark Rift (another generic fighting game with tinny, overly-compressed music and bland backgrounds)
ClayFighter 63 1/3 (horrible graphics; none of the humor is funny)
The Powerpuff Girls: Chemical X-Traction (pointless and unplayable)
Flying Dragon (another example of early 3D graphics and gameplay at its worst)
Transformers: Beast Wars Transmetals (bad graphics and terrible, broken gameplay)

I've never imported Rakuga Kids, but I've always thought it looked interesting and have always wanted to try it out.

Like many others have said, the N64's only good fighting game is Super Smash Bros., but I liked SSBM on Gamecube more.

Pro Wrestling is awesome on the N64 though. That's the only system I remember playing wrestling games on at friends houses and is the only reason I have a few on my N64. :)

Never was a fan of wrestling games... These games just don't appeal to me.

@ Rob2600:
Thank you very much for the rundown of the games. That gives me a very good idea what to look for.

I guess I will put KI: Gold, Mace & SSB on top of my list.

Thank you once again for all the help everyone.

I totally forgot about some of these!

I liked Tom & Jerry ok.

Bio Freaks is fairly simplistic fighting but it's a really nice-looking game.

Xena is NOTHING like the PSone Xena game. It looks better but plays worse than Bio Freaks (which is not that great, either.) The voice acting is so bad it's good. Callisto has an AWESOME scream! Nice looking game, though.

smash bros is the fighting game for nintendo consoles-tons of play on that for me and my friends (lots of wrestling games to) killer instinct is brilliant to we need that shit to get re released and a sequel! other than that I've tried everything else but most of it was generic stuff

You're welcome. I've played almost every Nintendo 64 game that was released in the U.S. and am happy to share my thoughts.
