View Full Version : Demo Disc Value?

I was wondering if demo discs, such as the ones given out at Gamestop and EB, or the ones that come in magazines, hold any kind of collector's value after the fact. Does anyone know how many copies are usually made of these discs or if they are something to hold onto? Or does it all depend on the game?

Don't know but if you are a hardcore collector that just has to have everything that was available to a certain system then probably yes. Who knows just keep it? :|

That's what I figured. Besides, can't beat the price when it's free, right? =)

SOME demo disks have a high value, a good example is the lunar silver story disk for psx it sells for 30+ at times (it allows you to do something you can't normally do in the full game), i'm sure there are other examples too ,but thats the one that comes to mind first.

The Christmas Nights demo for Sega Saturn also holds high value mainly because the full game was never released in the US.

The original PS demo... "Playstation Picks" and the "Developer's Demo Disc" also for the PS are very hard to find. I would think they'd be worth a bit.

One that comes to mind is the Gamecube RE4 demo that was a limited time special offer for buying the Pure Evil Pack.

The GCN Soul Calibur demo is worth substantially more than that.

Which game has not been released in the US ? Nights ? It was released in the US in 2 forms: alone and with the 3D controller.

Demo discs given with mags are not the most expensive ones, but demos/not for sale discs given away in some events could take a lot of value. For Saturn, the most expensive CDs are not games but not for sale discs.

A few demo's hold some value, but most are just uncommon and not worth much. The Magazine demo's tend to not be worth much, while 'eventually' the given away ones pick up some value.

I don't think that most people put much stock into PlayStation demo's when they first were hitting and there are alot of RARE ones for it now. Unfortunately their value is really limited to the few wacko's that are willing to shell out any money for them. The PS2 demo's have slowed down considerably but total numbers out there rank in the 200's now, so to really want to be into them is a pretty big commitment.

Systems like the DS/GBA have demo's out there that are pretty hard to get considering that they arn't actually released in the manner that the disc based demo's are. These ones are all 'liberated' from their display kiosks or have been presents from the local Nintendo reps. The GBA ones pull ok money, but since the DS is the new toy on the block, these carts tend to pull a much better return.

Most of the new systems (The Wii will be doing this soon enough) no longer have hard media demo's, since they have online services that allow you to download them so they arn't even making them available anymore.

No, Christmas NiGHTS. The one that became snow-covered in December, or let you play as one of the enemies on April 1st (I forget his name; the one that looks like NiGHTS).

Yep, I know what is Christmas Nights (check my signature) :wink 2: thegardentool talked about the related "full game was never released in the US." which could only be Nights for me (which was released in the US), unless he talked about another game.

The full game of Christmas Nights was never released in the US. It was released in Japan and Europe though.

That is one of the reasons the demo of Christmas Nights is worth a bit of money here.

What about the FFVII demo that came with Tobal here in the U.S.? Is that one pretty rare and valuable?

There, fixed it for you. In Japan, the exact same thing that we got for free with a magazine cost them cash monies (but came in a jewel case instead of a slipcase).

There are a hand-full of demo's that you can sell for a pretty penny. Between all my cd based consoles I probably have like 200 demo discs on a bunch of spindals. I should go threw all of them and check them out someday.

are the playstation final fantasy VII "square soft on playstation previews" and rayman 2 demo discs desirable at all?

3DO demo disc's are just full games with demo stamped on them and dont cost any more than the originals, but the sampler discs (that have demo games on them) that came with UK/Japan magazines fetch a high price and are highly collectable, i would collect them if i had money to spend, i only have a handfull right now

im not sure how many of each are out there

Not really. It only helps give Tobal some value. However since Tobal was kinda sucktacular (and Tobal 2 was really needed to cement the franchise here in America which didn't happen) its not worth much of anything unless it came with Tobal. It could have been worth a bit more if EVERY copy of Tobal didn't come with it, but alas, thats how Square was rolling at the time, when they were doing the demo packaging.

Nope and nope. Rayman 2 is a bit harder to get ahold of, but alas its not really worth much of anything.

The full game of Christmas Nights was never released in the US. It was released in Japan and Europe though.

Chirstmas Nights was always a demo disc, never sold and there is no "full game". It is the same everywhere. In Europe, it came with some mags or you can get it for free if you bought 2-3 games from a selection. In Japan, it was also given for free when buying a Saturn.

Just a note, US 3DO demo disc's are just full games with demo stamped on them, but Japanese demo discs are real demo of the game (I don't talk about cover discs like 3DO live! demo discs). There is a lot of JPN demo discs for the 3DO, and there are a lilbit difficult to get, not always because there are expensive but because there are rare in japan and even rarer outside the country.

the x-mas nights demo was a free rental at blockbuster for a while too, then when saturn started to die, they were selling them for $5. All the x-mas nights demo was meant for was some kind of "x-mas gift for saturn owners". I think what makes it high in value is all the unlockables that are in it. You could spend hours unlocking everything.

This tread is great it talks about two Questions I have. First is the PS demo with IQ and Parappa the Rapper worth much? I know Intelligent Qube is expensive and Parappa a little? And two how much does that chistmas Nights go for. If I get it I'll wait like March or April. Does anyone wanna get rid of theres?

Thanx RASK1904:rockets:

I only have six demos I'd end up keeping. Not sure if they're worth anything other than four of them increasing the value of the game complete.

Arc the Lad Twilight of Spirits(which sucks, sealed demo.) Dragon Quest VIII demo for preordering FF12(sealed and possibly lost,) Tobal no.1 FF7 Demo, Vanguard Bandits Lunar Eternal Blue Demo, Parasite Eve Squaresoft demo 1998 Collector's CD Volume 1, and Vagrant Story Squaresoft demo 2000 Collector's CD Volume 3.

What game has Squaresoft Collector's CD Volume 2? It'd kindof suck if I owned the game but didn't know I did.

Ah! This thread began BEFORE we started the What's It Worth? forum. I'm gonna shift this thread over there where it now belongs.

How the beep did I never see this thread before? Anyway, although it's a year and a half late, many many demo disc have long standing value, even more than the full game itself. For instance, I could get more for my Xbox Farcry demo than I could for my full Farcry game....even if the game were still factory sealed. And thats just one of many examples I could give.
