I think that the US SNES was launched with SMW, Populous, F-Zero, UN Squadron, Pilotwings…were there any others (Sept 1991 releases)?

The NES had the black box titles…I’m just not sure which ones were launch titles.

SNES F-Zero
SNES Pilotwings
SNES SimCity
SNES Super Mario World

As someone who was as immersed as one could be in the SNES launch.. unless I've been smoking crack, I really really do NOT remember Sim City as being a launch title... :? Or did I just not give a shit about it and thus blank it out...

Wow, Wave Race was a lauch title for the N64 in Australia?

I think in the US it was just Super Mario 64 & Pilot Wings 64, if I am not mistaken.

Definitely it was only Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64 as launch titles in the US. I bought Waverace 64 the day it came out, but I can't really remember exactly when after launch it was. I'm thinking it was about a month later. So maybe late September-early October.

I know Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire was another launch title for the N64 in the U.S.

No it wasn't. SotE came out atleast a month after launch, but I'm thinking it was more like 2-3 months after launch. N64 launched in late August. It was supposed to launch early Sept., like Sept. 2nd I think it was. But I reserved my N64 at Toys R Us and they called me to say my console was in late August. Like August 28th or something. :)

I noticed a few flaws in this list, mainly with N64.

N64 Super Mario 64
N64 Some chess game (Japan only)
N64 Pilotwings 64 (The launch title everyone forgot)

32X Doom
32X Star Wars Arcade
32X Virtua Racing Deluxe

As a matter of fact, there were ZERO 32X games available on launch day. I know, cus I got my 32X on launch day. :) I think it was only days later though that these 3 games mentioned were available.

Dreamcast AeroWings
Dreamcast Air Force Delta
Dreamcast Blue Stinger
Dreamcast Flag to Flag (Sega CART)
Dreamcast House of The Dead 2, The
Dreamcast Hydro Thunder
Dreamcast Monaco Grand Prix
Dreamcast Mortal Kombat Gold
Dreamcast NFL 2K
Dreamcast NFL Blitz 2000
Dreamcast Pen Pen Tricelon
Dreamcast Power Stone
Dreamcast Ready 2 Rumble Boxing
Dreamcast Sonic Adventure
Dreamcast Soul Calibur
Dreamcast TNN Motorsports Hardcore Heat
Dreamcast Tokyo Xtreme Racer
Dreamcast Trickstyle

Boy, the DC sure did have a solid launch lineup.

Game Boy Alleyway
Game Boy Baseball
Game Boy Super Mario Land
Game Boy Tennis
Game Boy Tetris

SML and Tetris are for sure legendary.

Genesis Altered Beast
Genesis Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf
Genesis Ghouls 'n Ghosts
Genesis Last Battle
Genesis Rambo III
Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog
Genesis Space Harrier II
Genesis Super Hang-On
Genesis Super Thunder Blade
Genesis Tommy Lasorda Baseball
Genesis World Championship Soccer

Wait, I'm almost positive Sonic wasn't a launch title...right?

N64 Super Mario 64

Where's Pilotwings 64?

Nintendo NES 10-Yard Fight
Nintendo NES Baseball
Nintendo NES Clu Clu Land
Nintendo NES Duck Hunt
Nintendo NES Excitebike
Nintendo NES Golf
Nintendo NES Gyromite
Nintendo NES Hogan's Alley
Nintendo NES Ice Climber
Nintendo NES Kung Fu
Nintendo NES Mach Rider
Nintendo NES Pinball
Nintendo NES Stack-Up
Nintendo NES Super Mario Bros.
Nintendo NES Tennis
Nintendo NES Wild Gunman
Nintendo NES Wrecking Crew

Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, Excitebike. Can't go wrong there.

PlayStation Battle Arena Toshinden
PlayStation ESPN Extreme Games
PlayStation Kileak: The DNA Imperative
PlayStation NBA Jam Tournament Edition
PlayStation Power Serve 3D Tennis
PlayStation Raiden Project, The
PlayStation Rayman
PlayStation Ridge Racer
PlayStation Street Fighter: The Movie
PlayStation Total Eclipse Turbo

BAT was amazing at the time, even if the control was iffy. Ridge Racer is awesome. Can't go wrong with Raiden or Rayman either.

PS2 Armored Core 2
PS2 City Crisis
PS2 Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore
PS2 Dynasty Warriors 2
PS2 ESPN: International Track & Field
PS2 ESPN: Winter X Games: Snowboarding
PS2 Eternal Ring
PS2 Evergrace
PS2 Fantavision
PS2 GunGriffon Blaze
PS2 Kessen
PS2 Madden NFL 2001
PS2 Midnight Club: Street Racing
PS2 MotoGP
PS2 Orphen: Scion of Sorcery

PS2 Silent Scope
PS2 Smuggler's Run
PS2 SSX
PS2 Street Fighter EX3
PS2 Summoner
PS2 Swing Away Golf
PS2 Tekken Tag Tournament
PS2 TimeSplitters
PS2 Unreal Tournament
PS2 Wild Wild Racing
PS2 X-Squad

PS2 was freaking impossible to get for like the first 6 months it was out! lol...

Saturn Clockwork Knight
Saturn Daytona USA
Saturn Ghen War
Saturn Panzer Dragoon
Saturn Virtua Fighter

What a shocker it was to see the Saturn for sale way early. I remember a firend and I were walking around the mall and we looked over at Software Etc. and saw Saturn stuff all over the place in there. We were like "wtf!?" But it was too expensive for us... We were like 14.

SNES F-Zero
SNES Pilotwings
SNES SimCity
SNES Super Mario World

I know I'm not the only one that prefers SMB3 over SMW...right? :) Not to say SMW isn't great though.

Virtual Boy Galactic Pinball
Virtual Boy Mario's Tennis
Virtual Boy Red Alarm
Virtual Boy Teleroboxer

Well, Mario's Tennis and Red Alarm are very solid games and launch titles at that.

I tweaked the query that checks for "launch title" info so it's a little more complete but there's still a lot missing - not all of our editors have used the "landmarks" field or have used the words launch title (or have used it when this isn't exactly what was meant (ie "slated to be a launch title but...")

Anyway, revised above, that'll have to do for now.

Wow, Wave Race was a lauch title for the N64 in Australia?

Yep sure was. I remember the N64 launch very well because we preordered it then got it first thing in the morning the day it came out. We could only afford to get Super Mario 64 but my friend got his 64 at launch day too and he got all 3 games. I was jealous so I remember that pretty well.

SotE came out atleast a month after launch, but I'm thinking it was more like 2-3 months after launch.

I heard shadows was a launch title for the UK, can anyone confirm?

Final Fight was a definitely a launch title for the SNES in the U.S.

Final Fight was around late Oct '91. USA launch day (~August 21st) had just 3 titles: SMW, F-Zero and Pilotwings.

ActRaiser was a SNES launch title I believe. If it wasn't released the day of it was released sometime very close to the launch of the console.

Another Q4 1991 release, I think. Hmm... that brings up another question, does anyone know when FF2 got released?

I seem to remember Populous as the first game after launch, in September sometime... TRU finally had another game besides F-Zero and Pilotwings in the SNES section (the box art cards where you take the small slip of paper below it to the register)

Super Castlevania IV was early December, it made it out just a few weeks before Christmas :)

Rather strange to see the Virtual Boy's launch titles listed, but not some others. Let me throw in some quickly-researched things. This oughta boost the amount of referred-to launch title games.

Satellaview (Japan) (researched by MadHatter of the BS Zelda forums with some help from myself.);
Tamori no Picross |タモリのピクロス (first episode)
Yuki no Jigsaws | 有紀のジグソーキッズ
Wario no Mori Bakusho Ban | ワリオの森 爆笑バージョン

Rest of these are just quickly pulled from Wikipedia (inb4 inevitable "This info is wrong, Wikipedia sucks").

PC-FX (Japan)
Graduation 2: Neo Generation FX
Battle Heat
Team Innocent

TurboGrafx-16 (USA)
Blazing Lazers
China Warrior
Vigilante
Alien Crush
Keith Courage in Alpha Zones

Neo Geo AES (US)
Baseball Stars Professional
NAM-1975

Famicom (Japan)
Donkey Kong,
Donkey Kong Jr.
Popeye

Famicom Disk System (Japan)
Baseball
Golf
Mahjong
Soccer
Super Mario Bros.
Tennis
Zelda no Densetsu

64DD (Japan) (Ok, so technically these were ten days afterward with no actual launch titles, much like the 32x. Still...)
Mario Artist: Paint Studio
Doshin the Giant

Playdia (Japan)
Dragon Ball Z - Shin Saiyajin Zetsumetsu Keikaku Chikyū Hen
Bishōjo Senshi Sailor Moon S - Quiz Taiketsu! Sailor Power Shūketsu!!
SD Gundam Daizukan

Emperor Megas

Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog...Yeah, I'm pretty sure that Sonic the Hedgehog was released about two years after the Genesis launched. IIRC, Mystic Defender, Phantasy Star II, Truxton, Forgotten Worlds, The Revenge of Shinobi, Thunder Force II, and Zoom were launch titles though.

And I'm almost positive there were only 3 games available for the SNES when it released. I remember when some games were finally released Actraiser was one of the first.

What? No ColecoVision? My favorite console of all-time can't be ignored!

ColecoVision!

According to my Ken Uston video game book, these were the launch titles for the ColecoVision:

Donkey Kong (the pack-in)
Cosmic Avenger
Lady Bug
Venture
Smurf: Rescue In Gargamel's Castle

Wiki says there were 12 but I doubt it, Ken would have reviewed them in his book.

Yeah, Wiki lists those 3 games plus Mousetrap, Space Panic, Ken Uston's Poker & Blackjack and Carnival. I don't think Ken Uston was a launch game as I don't recall seeing a review of the game until mid-to-late 1983 in Electronic Fun.

correct me if im wrong but wasnt phantasy star 2 a us genny launch title? im probobly wrong. it may have been one of the many awesome games(revenge of shinobi) that came out shortly after launch around dec of 89, and man no wonder the saturn(one of my fave consoles) failed so misserably what a god awefull list of launch games, probobly the worst of all time. was virtua fighter 2 a launch title? or just the embarrasing port of virtua fighter? i know 2(which is awesome!) was a pack in game at one time.
