According to Sony, the redesigned PSP is now avalible. But going to the store to find one: that's an entirely different story.
And it's still $200. It comes with Daxter, Family Guy: Freakin' Sweet Collection, and a 1GB memory stick duo.

Does anyone know yet if the new PSP's can be flashed with custom firmware?

I'd buy the silver redesign if it didn't come with an extra $50 worth of crap I don't want. I'll wait until they sell just the PSP unit by itself.

same here. the family guy collection lowers the value imo. i'd probably pay more not to have that thing out of my hatred for the show.

Considering I rarely play the original I'm probably going to hold off until I can get just the system.

I thought sony was working to stop that, with their latest firmwares.... but I hope they can be upgraded that would be sweet.

The most current PSP firmwares (3.52 i think?) have custom firmware versions available. If Sony is still trying to combat the homebrew scene, they aren't doing a good job.
The hardware in these new slim PSP's might be a different story though.

Sony probably shouldn't be trying to stop custom firmwares, homebrews, and emulation, because that's the only reason most people even own the damn thing.

I bought one today (Piano Black). I really like the system better then the old one. It fits my hands better and the controls seems more responsive. I don't have any fighting games so i haven't checked if the d-pad is responsive enough for fighting games without modding it. The firmware on my (european) unit is 3.60 so it can't be flashed. :( Hopefully it will be hacked quickly cause a portable emulation handheld with a tv-out option is a wet dream. :king:
another lame thing is they didn't include a tv-out cable wtf?

It's Sony - you really thought they'd pass on a way to screw you out of $30?

I guess you've never heard of the GamePark GP2X (http://wiki.gp2x.org/wiki/Main_Page)? I've been able to play emulation on a handheld with a tv out option for quite some time now, but you know what? It's cheaper, more convenient, and better quality doing that on a console.
I'm not hating - I plan on getting one of the slim PSP's too... once they start getting traded in at the store.

i've owned a gp2x and a gp32 but the weird stick on the gp2x just killed it for me.. The redesigned gp2x does look good though. :)

"Weird stick"? That's the way I'd describe the PSP (at least the original one). Never had a problem with the GP2X stick.

Yeah the dpad on the first psp really sucked but if you modified it with a piece of thin plastic it was really great! (http://www.ufighterx.com/guides/videogame/pspdpadfix/pspdpadfix.htm).
Have you seen the new Gp2x F-200 btw? They should have added that d-pad on the first one tbh.

I'd be shocked if even 10% of PSP owners have done such things with their PSP's.

you'd be surprised. at least 50% of my adult customers who own PSP's ask or comment on homebrew and custom firmware for their system.

I sold my psp a few months back after having bought it on launch day during the time I had it I mostly used homebrew/emulation stuff and only bought maybe 5-10 games all of which were good (for the most part a few sucked) great machine just needs more games
I might buy this revision since there are now a couple more games out I want and the improvements sound nice. HOpefully they'll back this up with far more quality games!

I mostly run Pulstar, Snatcher, International Super Star Soccer, and Herzog Zwei on my GP2x and the stick is well suited for those games (they also happen to be some of my favorites). However, playing side scrolling platform games or puzzle games is suicide on a GP2X.

Snatcher? That thing plays SegaCD games?!?

It plays Snatcher very well. I had some issues at first and that is because I am used to overclocking the system and it caused the game to crash. Snatcher's sound isn't 100% (more like 80-90%).
Not sure about other Sega CD games since there are only a few that are playable...

I got my silver PSP tonight for the price of a regular one.

Took them a bit to decide, but they price matched it :)

Does anyone know yet if the new PSP's can be flashed with custom firmware?
The new system is shipping with new firmware - version 3.60. There is no way to downgrade from 3.60 yet, and even once they figure that out, the new hardware might add some problems to the process we're unaware of yet. Don't buy the new one expecting to be running OE firmware in a hurry - it could take a few weeks or even a few months to get it all figured out...

Looks like the new 3.60 firmware has just been dumped, so the slim PSP is one step closer to running custom firmware:

Sometimes I think i'm the only one who just wants to pop in a game and play on this thing.
Anyways, does anyone know if there are carrying cases for this version of the PSP yet? I bought a case last night but it doesn't seem to fit very well at all.

If anyone lives in PA (near Reading or Philly), I have spotted these things at the King of Prussia mall (If that means anything to you).
They are out and yes, like I pointed out, with a little hunting you can probably get one.
That being said, I do work in the Philadelphia area (right now at least on business). These were seen in more upscale stores in that area. The one retail associate at a Game Stop (nonetheless) told me that they are out in "limited areas." I am assuming he means only in certain areas.
So I guess that explains it....???

The reason I bought one.
Seconded.
There is not a single game on the PSP that I have found worth playing over emulated games.
Also, digitalpress, why don't you give me a ring when the GP2X is capable of full PS1 emulation.

Went to GameStop first, where an employee told me they actually got to handle one out of package. Unforunately the manager made it disappear lol I was told it seemed poorly made, fragile, and cheap, like a kid's toy. I stated that I think the new UMD door will be more prone to breakage than the old style, and still do. They only had the silver/Daxter bundle in. Said there was a display hanging, but I couldn't find it. Not a unit, just a display.
TRU here has them in stock, not released yet (checked in system for pricing), and ONLY in Daxter/silver combo, also. An employee showed me the Daxter/silver bundled, sealed. The PSP2000 looked horrible in the packaging. Overall the face of it looked like a 3rd party replacement might, with somewhat mismatching parts. Poor paint job; the lower buttons had visible hard edges sticking up, like from excess paint. Oww! Cear-ish buttons that didn't quite match, to my eye. Analog nub seems to be a toggle type. A recessed ball-in-socket that made me think of a recessed GCN nub, but the fingerpad didn't look soft.

This is well said! I am not too impressed by the system! That Star Wars pack looks tempting though! Can't wait for that to be released!

I picked up the Daxter Bundle today. I think it's quite nice. The cosmetic differences are not significant though I prefer the Piano Black of the orginal versus the silver. It is much lighter and more comfortable because of it. The controls and buttons aren't significantly changed for my tastes. Load times are slightly better; the cartridge slot looks inferior but I presume it was necessary in order for the slimming.
But once againSony can't include the damn cable. TThe TV Out cable is not included (did someone mention that?) and it also does not seem to be in stores yet. If anyone has seen this cable anywhere I'd appreciate a heads up.

The box doesn't even say slim PSP, it's just silver with the stick, family guy and Daxter. My wal-mart has it and the guy said it was a regular PSP then I looked into the sales paper and it says slim.

It's slim. I imagine this unit completely replaces the older model so there is no need to advertise it. Soon the slim will be all that is available.

If you want an older model, you better get one now. They are out of production, as you can probably guess.
Soon the piano black slim will replace the current core system!
Now, hopefully, the Star Wars pack will ship soon....!!!

I wish they would have released the pastel colors in the United States. I was quite partial to the purple color, myself.
Instead Sony gives us a couple of colors and unnecessary bundles. Why are they still hocking 1 GB memory sticks? They are nowhere near big enough these days.
The slim is a good improvement, though. When it gets hacked I'll get one.
