View Full Version : What PS2 games are you guys picking up at the system's end?

The PS2 is getting on in years and the amount of major releases for the system is slowing down. What games are you guys picking up that you think will become rare and what ones are you picking up in general?

Games I need in general:
God of War I and II
Guitar Hero 1 (boxed if possible)

Games that might become hard to find:
Okami (really want this)
Wild Arms 5
Growlanser: Heritage of War Special Edition
Odin Sphere
.Hack series (not sure which series I want)
Grim Grimoire

Lots of imports. I have exhausted the domestic stuff for the most part.

Okami (really want this)

With over a quarter million copies sold (in the US) as of over 6 months ago, I think it won't be too hard to find a copy of that for quite a while.

I'd really like to pick up Wild Arms 4 and 5 because they sound pretty snazzy. Ditto for Grim Grimoire and Odin Sphere. Hopefully Ace Combat: Belkan War drops in price to sub $20 sometime soon...I've been wanting to pick that one up for a while. Lethal Skies would be a nice one to dig up on the super cheap, too.

...not much else that I can think of at this point. Really, I'm just trying to make some headway into all of the PS2 games I've picked up so far. No doubt I'll impulse buy some more cheapies (maybe snag some extra Zone of the Enders for their double disc cases), but off the top of my head I can't really think of anything else that i really need/want.

The imports is one thing I forgot about. There is some stuff I'd like to import, but I've never had the money. I really need to mod my ps2. I got an import copy of rez to play since I don't want to open my sealed US copy (not a reprinted one).

Maybe I should change the thread's title? I guess you could call this the ps2's golden years.

Okami might not become rare, but it will get a little harder to find new. Not as many stores in my town are carrying it any more. I'm hoping it will go down to $20. Some CAGs were reporting that some TRU stores where putting them on clearance for $20. Unfortunately, mine still had it at $40, but I might go back next week to check it again.

I'm really thinking about getting that new Growlanser. I've been hearing that it is going to have a very limited print run.

Tons of games coming out now that I want thanks to the PS2's budget status. The Bonk/Advenute Island/Star Soldier remakes being localized by DSI, the mass amounts of love SNKP is giving (you know they're going to localize more of the Battle collections for 2008), Fire Pro Wrestling Returns, etc. etc.

I'm loving the budget status PS2, because we're getting a lot of the quirky Japanese stuff that we never would have gotten prior to the PS3 release, and on the cheap to boot. I'm hoping someone jumps on localizing the Psikyo Shooting Collections, as I missed out on importing the non-Taito's best label versions.

I kind of like how the PS3 not doing so great is extending the life of the PS2. I see the PS2 having one or two more limping years of retail in it before it goes away for good. The system is such a great "all arounder" I am just happy that the hits keep on coming. Personally any budget comp like Fatal Fury that comes out I am all over. I totally forgot about the Bonk remake. I am stoked!

I think Sony really needs the revenue stream the PS2 is capable of until the PS3 gets on it's feet, so I'm hoping to see alot more games coming out, including a bunch of stuff left in Japan. Come on Sony, milk the shit out of this thing!

This Growlanser: Heritage of War is Growlanser V, correct? Growlanser Generations was II & III, correct? So where's Growlanser IV?

Some games I need some catching up on....
Metal Slug Anthology
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Way of the Samurai 2
God of War II
GrimGrimoire
Tales of the Abyss

Some I'm looking forward to...
Jackass: The Game
Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal - chainguns, rabbits and Mars! Sounds cool!
Aqua Teen Hunger Force Zombie Ninja Pro-Am - golf-fighter-kart racer from Adult Swim - please keep the adult humor!
Bee Movie Game- with Jerry Seinfeld. Bee flying sounds cool, bee's driving cars- not so much!
The Simpsons Game - game spoofs of popular titles
Swashbucklers: Blue & Grey - Pirate ships I like! The game's narrative using black humor and irony sounds even better!
The Golden Compass - a girl traveling with an armed polar bear and a pet demon confronting an organization known as The Gobblers. I'm intrigued!
Kiki Kai World - I've yet to play a Pocky & Rocky game. I'm ashamed!
Alone in the Dark

Sequels I'm glad to see supposedly coming...
MetropolisMania 2
Mercenaries 2
Manhunt 2
Cold Winter 2
Destroy All Humans: Big Willy
Total Overdose 2
Obscure 2
Knights of the Temple II

I can see the PS2 continue to get releases when it finally crawls out of the majority mindset... sorta like the Dreamcast has. ~120 million units floating around almost guarantees this, I'd say.

Still looking forward to GoW2, GH2 and some of the soon to come micro-publisher niche titles. Hopefully with plenty of shmups and comps. :)

Once again:

What system's end? The system still has another year at least, of releases becoming available for it. I never understood why everyone thinks it is over for the PS2! The original Xbox has been dead for about a year, but the PS 2, come on!

Look at all that is scheduled to come out and you'll see what I mean!

I just got the Resident Evil pack that came out this week, Wild Arms 5, and I was lucky to get OKAMI BRAND NEW AT TOYS R US for $19.95 - I guess the game just isn't selling!

Anyway, I beleive I'll still be buying new releases for this system for at least the next 10+ months!

Neo Gamer, alot of people on this board agree that the system has probably a year or two of retail left, it is just that usually the last year or two of a system at retail stores is usually crap. So far, the PS2 has suprised many by having a great swan song ending. Okami sold horribly, and Clover Studios who made the game shut down(They also did God Hand) To me, the Xbox has been dead for two years(It stopped production in 2005), and the last year of retail for the Xbox(last year) was pretty awful. Bottom line: There is alot of PS2 goodness out there for all.

Alone in the Dark

The funny thing is I still see the new Alone in the Dark listed for release on the 'ol PS2 on MANY sites such IGN and about 4 other good to decent gaming websites.

I wonder if there actually will be a version of the new Alone in the Dark for the PS2 or if its just a mistake that a LOT of websites are making?

I still need Odin Sphere, Grim Grimoire, Rogue Galaxy and a few others to finish off my "needs" list. Speaking of Persona 3, what the hell is up with the distribution of this game and the guide? The guide is utterly impossible to find and the CE is long gone. I don't think the game had a shelf life of two weeks in my area...

Need:

-Madden 08
-Madden 07
-TMNT
-Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (was about to buy it but ran into money trouble)
-Pirates of the Caribbean: Legend of Jack Sparrow
-Sega Genesis Collection
-Sega Classics Collection
-A couple Resident Evil games
-Blowout
-Jaws Unleashed
-Bully
-Few older sports games
-Plus cheap ones like Medal of Honor Frontline, GTA: Liberty City Stories and gotta replace my ruined copy of GTA: Vice City

Actually, I am more interested in filling in a bunch of holes from my XBox collection. I'm more worried about the later day games in that library drying up than I am the later day PS2 games.

I only recently picked up a US PS2 (had a Japanese one for a few years now), so I still have boat loads of games I'd like to get eventually. My collection has been really ballooning, though. All of the sudden I found myself sitting on over 40 games, and I don't know how that happened. o_O I've been somewhat going after titles I think might be tough to find and/or more expensive later on. Just as an example, I picked up Dual Hearts, since in the past I heard that it had a very small print run.

Here's what I'm going to track down:

- Guitar Hero series (1 \ 2 \ Encore \ 3)
- Wild Arms series (Mainly 4, 5, and Alter Code F. Might get 3 since it's cheap)
- .hack series (Just need Mutation and Outbreak!)
- Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando
- Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal

Stuff I might try out:
- .hack//GU series (After I get the last 2 parts of the original .hack games)
- Maximo vs. Army of Zin
- Disguia series
- Final Fantasy XII
- Legend of Kay
- Okami
- Soul Calibur III

Again, though, trust me, unless your like me and don't want to buy used, most of you guys have plenty of time. I wouldn't be surprised to see God of War II released in Greatest Hits packaging by year's end. Also, my local independent game shop has told me that they plan to carry PS2 games (NEW) long into 2008. Given that they have a wall of BRAND NEW Xbox games, I have no reason to doubt them.

As for new releases: the Resident Evil Pack just came out, Fatal Fury Battle Archives 2 looks like a no brainer, and many more look to be coming out at least until May of 2008! After that, I will have to review the current market situation, but I am good till then.

I do appreciate your reply, though, and answering my comments. I was just more or less stating my opinion. The Xbox died early because of Microsoft, not because of a lack of demand in the marketplace. They just pulled the plug (with total disregard to both gamers and the stockholders alike-if you happen to follow business, you can find a lot of artilcles written by investors who happen to dislike Microsoft for doing this, thus causing a loss in their home games divisiion.) On another note, Microsoft seems to remind those in the financial world of Mattel, when they went through hardware every couple years with their infamous Intellivision! Will history repeat itself? Time will tell on that, but let's just say that I read a great internal document in the financial industry that claims there will be a Playstation 4, but doubts are looming wether or not there will be another Microsoft game system-interesting, I know! Keep in mind, I did not say whether or not, I agree with the report!

I remeber the original Sony Playstation held on a lot longer than most people thought possible, due to Sony's continued efforts to support the system! I believe this will happen with the PS2 as well!

Enough said, though I probably raised a few eye brows by what I posted. I cannot release the info on that report. If I could I would, but time will prove to be golden! So what do you guys think:

Will there be another Xbox system? AND/OR Will there be another Sony Playstation system?

Should I start a new thread on this???

The PS2 is far from "ending".

No doubt, the PS2 is going to have a 10 year life cycle just like the PS1 did. Those are Sony's own words, btw. Its far from over considering the cost of development on that system is pretty low compared to the newer systems.

That being said, the new Growlancer is going to be very hard to find imo.

You got my hopes up that OZ got a US release or something that I didn't know about :( Oh well, to shorten your list by 1, Sword of Etheria is the UK title for OZ/Over Zenith. I can't believe it didn't get published here.

Like many others I still need to pick up some of the newer RPG releases (Rogue Galaxy, Grim Grimore, Odin Sphere). I'm still undecided if I should attempt in the next few years to complete a PS2 collection. I'm currently at 546 games for the system. Anyone know the official released game count up to this point?

Edit: According to wikipedia there have been 1,375 games in North America at the end of 2006. Wow, might be tougher than I though to track down a complete collection.

Nope, I bought it day of release too. If not innoative then the game surely must get credit for going in a different direction than most other adventure platformers. Not sure how the hype train passed this one by.

Nope, I got it then as well thanks to Toys R Us' Buy 2 Get 1 Free.

Could have been a great game if it was about a third of the present length. Too much of it felt like tacked on fluff to boost game time. Had the storyline's pace been fixed and the fat been trimmed off, it could have been an amazing 8-12 hour game instead of a tedious and dull 30+hour game.

The game was in the top 100 best selling games of 2006 (sold something like 200k copies in only 3 months) and could easily be reissued as a Greatest Hits if Capcom were so inclined, but it seems like they're all about quietly forgetting about it.

Right now, I'm debating on if I should get the newest Growlanser. The collector in me is saying to get it. But I'm also hesitant. I'm feeling a little burnt out on RPGs and I'm thinking about saving my money for something like HL2: The Orange Box. I'm thinking the collector in me is going to win.

Usually I don't get those first because I see them a lot in store. Games I am currently tracking down

- Raiden III

All of those titles will probably be worthwhile, but look for some of the more obscure ones. Ones that pop out in my mind Silent Hills series, Fatal Frame series, any of the Final Fantasy series sealed will be good, Shadows of Colossus and others. Also unusual ones like The Bible Game will probably become hard to find as the years pass.

Yeah, I'm in the market for this game, and was thinking it has a high probability to be worth a pile in a few years. It's been getting great reviews and everyone I've talked to who has played it loves it, and yet it is already pretty hard to find, despite having just came out. The guide might wind up being a bitch, too (DoubleJump stamped "Limited Edition" really huge on the cover, so they seem to be playing that angle, regardless of how accurate it is).

Does anyone know when The Bonk/Advenute Island/Star Soldier remakes being localized by DSI are going to be released, as this is the first time I have heard of it?

I agree that given the budget status of the PS2, there will be more of the quirky Japanese stuff coming out. I will buy them as long as they are being localized and released in US.

It does exist. It was only release in US as pre-order bonus at Gamestop. Check this auction (http://cgi.ebay.com/Metal-Gear-Solid-3-Subsistence-Limited-Edition-PS2_W0QQitemZ200162506852QQihZ010QQcategoryZ62053Q QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem).

They had them on the shelves at pretty much every game crazy I went to months after it was first release. I was able to find 3 of them since its release but I haven't seen them for god knows how long. Two of them I sold sealed on e-bay and got a good chunk of change for (considering I paid $40 for each copy) one I have opened up sitting in my own collection. It says in the guide its an R5 and supposed to be the rarest PS2 game (according to the guide).

Like the Energizer Bunny, this system is still going. I just got Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection and I'm waiting on SNK Classics, even though it got pushed back.

I just sent my 360 back to the States and puchased a used Slim PS2+2 controllers+memory card+8 games for around $80. I forgot how great this system was compared to the dreck I was playing on the 360. Long live the PS2!

I currently have 47 PS2 games and my want list is about 40 games long. And that's without getting into imports. I think I'll be buying PS2 games for a long time.

On the subject of newer games, does anyone know if Free Running is still coming out? It doesn't seem to be listed on Gamestop or Amazon.

Recently picked up:

Persona 3:FES
Arcana Heart
Katamari Damacy
We <3 Katamari

I still need to play through/pick up:

Xenosaga 1,2,3
God of War 2
Shadow of the Colossus
Ico
Metal Gear solid (never played 2 OR 3. Straight up shameful)
Odin Sphere
Maybe try out a "Tales of..." game or two

Honestly, I don't think the system is "dead". There are SO many good PS2 titles. Especially now that they are so cheap, Persona 3:FES was only $30! I am going back and playing all the games I either missed out on (a la katamari) or told myself I'd never play (see: FFX and RE4)

I recently have picked up:

Heavenly Guardian
Persona 3: FES
Baroque
Arcana Heart

There is a new SRPG comming out for the PS2 also that is supposed to have characters from other RPGs in it such as Shadow Hearts and a few others. There are a couple older games I would like to pick up as well such as the clover studio releases and some of the other RPGs I don't have in there yet.

I already own a ton for the console (323), for what I still need well I'm trying to buy every platformer and survival horror game for the PS2, would really like to find a copy of Adventures of Cookie & Cream, Casper the Ghost, Taz Unwanted, Frogger Adventures and still need to pick-up Rule of Rose, Obscure, Haunting Ground and a few more gems I been wanting but with me owning all the next-gen consoles well my money goes to them when eventually it will go to buying some more PS2 games I would like.

bought 'god hand' the other day. it's a fun game, but has a punishing difficulty (at least to me; i'm not that great at action/fighting games).

still, any game with an attack called "pimp hand" deserves some play time.

I've never seen a copy of MGS3: SLE...I'm convinced it's existence is a hoax.

It does exist. It was only release in US as pre-order bonus at Gamestop.

I have a copy, and I live in Canada. Mine is still sealed too.

While on topic, I would say there is but one domestic game I'm aware of that I would want to obtain, barring any significant problems with the release. It is the Samurai Shodown Anthology. I don't even know the details with the Japanese release, but if it ever makes it out, I'll be prepared.

Well, I no longer own a PS2 (migrated over to the PS3 early on), and I sold off most all of my PS2 titles already. But, I still do love and purchase the compilations...and am sure I will pick up every last one of them right to the very end.

I hadn't bought a baseball game since 2006 so I recently picked up the PS2 version of MLB 08: The Show (I don't have a PS3) and also just orderred MLB Power Pros for a different sort of baseball game. Has anyone here played that game?

Do yourself a favor and bookmark The MLB Power Pros Wiki (http://www.glenridgeposse.com/mlbpp/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page), as it covers a lot of material that wasn't explained decently (or at all) in the manual. You know, like Success Mode, which is one of the main draws to the game.

Thank you....looks like a lot of info there. And I have indeed bookmarked it.
