Did you see it?
Several hundred people converging on a ten foot square area to grab at a box that might have a prize ticket inside.
You can imagine that this *could* get ugly, and we heavily relied on the good nature of the guests to keep it clean. For the most part they did, but there was quite a mob scene and some jostling that I'd prefer to avoid should we attempt a fun "every man, woman and child for themselves" event this year.
You're voting to keep an "every man, woman and child for themselves" event as part of CGE, but more importantly, I'd like to hear your ideas for how YOU would conduct this kind of free-for-all with no risk of injury. I have given some thought to having a sort of "wall" where the goodies are thrown out "E3-style" to the crowd, or even shoved in piles OVER the wall in a 360-degree outward circle, but I think all the latter idea does is make the convergent area a little bigger.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

What you need is a "T shirt launcher" type of gun that shoots the dig dug boxes into the air above the crowd. Or, how about a "santa fury" with the space fury mask and a santa costume that comes out and chucks boxes everywhere?

Eh, I think I'd ixnay the scavenger hunt idea. I don't think the vendors would appreciate people trying to paw through all the stuff on their tables to "find" something.
"Hey, look, a prototype! I think that was on the list"
"Hey, kid, no it's not, give that back!"

Something like the Dig Dug drop, but not the DDD exactly. That was too much chaos last year.

I had to "nay" the idea. Maybe it's just because I didn't start out near the middle, or because I was one of the smaller people in it last year, but it was just a little too harsh. I remember I got good and ruffed-up.
How about a more simple, not-quite-as-chaotic-to-warrent-wanting-medical-attention idea? The idea of just pushing the stuff off the tables at some random time was a good one, and it wouldn't get nearly as forceful as the Drop was. Remember, there were at least what, 300 people trying at once to cram into that little space? Just a little much, if you ask me.

I'll admit one thing about it, though: It was suprisingly fun to clean up after it though. I still have at least 60+ Dig Dug instruction books! Anybody want one, I can bring'um this year. 8-)

I thought the dig dug drop was pretty bad last year, I just had a bunch of ripped open boxes thrown at my face. You just had some people who opened 20 boxes, and the rest opened maybe 1.

The IDEA was bad? Or the EXECUTION was bad?
If it's the IDEA you didn't like, I'm looking for better ones. Thanks.

The idea was great! The execution, though, could use some tweaking. I would simply suggest increasing the dispersal radius. There was one net, dropping a pile of boxes on a tightly focused area. I was not even able to touch a single box--I'm not crying sour grapes, merely stating a fact. What if you had several nets (with fewer boxes in each) spread over a bigger area, dropping them simultaneously?

Different spots would be a good idea for a little tweak. That way the crowd's smaller and (hopefully) less forceful than what it started out as. Plus it would give a bigger and better chance to the majority that's not in the middle of the mob.
PLUS it would get me to try to spend even more money knowing that I could show up maybe just a few minutes before it and not like half an hour beforehand. Good tweak. I'd support it more then.

I'm with Scott; some of the various animated characters that we have could run around and give away cool stuff at random. The DDD was just as bad as the table push at CGE '99; too many "agressive" people cuasing injury.
T-Shirt launcher could be dangerous... not enough open space in the room. However, KO'ing DP with one of his own shirts could be amusing :D
I thoght the drop last year was just a mess. All the games dropped in one spot and a small group of people tossed boxes all over the place. I'm surprised someone didn't get nailed in the eye with a box corner.
I think handing them out would have been better, or at least some way of spreading the games out in a much wider area.
That's my two-cents worth...

I probably should have updated this sooner, but this has already been replaced. There won't be a "drop" but there will be a similar game that is guaranteed orderly and in MY opinion MUCH more fun and relative to the show.
Sorry, but it's still one of those "secret projects"... I can't wait to announce it!
I saw the announcement on the CGE website for the cart handout with some of the carts being 'special'. Whomever thought up this idea is a genius. It's a much better deal than the Drop. I love it!!!!!
