View Full Version : complete list of every console in USA

I have put together my collection list of every gaming console and variant made and released for the USA market from the last century....1972 to 2000ish. This list includes gaming consoles and handhelds (that can play different games)...plus variants.
No dedicated machines were included except pong....cause it's pong.
I have left some of the "computer consoles" and most computer variants out. The list is mainly for gaming consoles, but I know it can be a fine line.
And no color variations for newer consoles.
Can you see anything I am missing? I want to make sure my collection is complete. Hope this list will be handy for other collectors!

Basic Criteria: was the console mostly designed to play an interchangeable game?

Was the B&W NGPC really released in the US?

Lots of computers missing as you mentioned, it'd be hard to get all the obscure stuff like the NEC Trek and whatnot.

Commodore 128...also Messiah NEX NES (don't see it?).

Gameboy Micro?

Aren't there a gazillion pong machines?

As far as variants go there are plenty more depending on how far you want to go:

Different model PS1's, lime green or watermelon N64's.

Then there is the 32x arguement (is it a console? or isn't it?). If the 32x counts than howabout the Master-Gear or other adapters?

yeah, can't believe I left the micro and Messiah out....especially since I specialize in NES :) They are on my list. And I thought about the 32x vs master convertor dillemma. Games were made for the 32x specifically, so it was included. The master convertor adds nothing to the list, so I left it out.

And I did not include the bazillion pong clones, becuase they do not play other roms. The main four pongs are on the list becuase they are "real" pongs....and pong is too important not to be represented.
And as far as colors go for the newer units...I am not adding them to the list. Just gets in the way as clutter. I know that is a problem for some people:).
I don't know anything about any PS1 variants....what are you referring to?
And what is the NEC Trek ?

You can hardly count the "pikachu edition" and "pokemon edition" of the GBC as different consoles - they were exactly the same as the ordinary GBC internally, no? If you start counting different colors and shell variants your task will be considerably more complex.

Now, the Gameboy Pocket, that's something that ought to be in there.

Also, are you counting the Majesco Game Gear in there? This "flatscreen"/"rounded screen" designation is new to me.

This "flatscreen"/"rounded screen" designation is new to me.

Some of the older Game Gears have a flat glass screen instead of a rounded plastic one (which is easier to scratch). I've got one, even though it doesn't work very well anymore.

Nice list, there were 2 versions of the n-gage btw.

Yes, but it was only available directly from SNK. I believe it was just the Asian market English model, but I would have to pull mine out of storage to to sure.

Three I see off the bat are the Gamewave, that latest Mattel system (name is escaping me right now, the one that has the Ben 10 game), and the RDI Halcyon. I've never found any hard evidence that the Halcyon was actually sold to the public, but I've also never found evidence to the contrary.

There were several different Coleco Telstar consoles:

Oh, and there was that other Mattel system that took VHS tapes. What was that called again?

There's also the Gizmondo and... that other obscure portable tablet PC-like thing whose name I also forget.

I think there were two versions of the ADAM (one that could use a Colecovision's RAM and one that couldn't), but again, if you start counting computer variants, you're in for a headache.

Don't forget the Tapwave Zodiac, 2 versions of that one.

1 "Nice list, there were 2 versions of the n-gage btw"
Thanks! I will check it out.
2 "Also, are you counting the Majesco Game Gear in there?"
I did not know about that one.
3 "There were several different Coleco Telstar consoles:"
Yes, but only one played different cartridges. The others were Pong clones.
4 "I think there were two versions of the ADAM "
I believe the Adams were really promoted as computers.
5 "There's also the Gizmondo "
That is not from the USA, is it?
6 What is a Gamewave?

7 I do not believe the RDI Halcyon was ever released. It and the 3DO M2 did not make the list.

The Gizmondo was released in the USA, although in small numbers (mall kiosks only?) But, I am sure it was, as I owned one :)

N-gage had "N-Gage", then the remodeled "N-Gage QD".

Jorpho

Aye, the Zodiac, that's what I was thinking of.

Oh, and the Gameboy Advance SP 2.0 (with the new screen) probably counts as a discreet console.

Thanks! But when was the Tapwave released? I am unfamiliar with this console.

I just checked on Gizmondo...though you are correct, it was released way past the year 2000. It does not fit into this list. The N-gage is also over the dateline and will be kicked out.

Tapwave was after 2000. I didn't catch that on your original post. The Gamewave is the same, but it's worth picking up as it's pretty cheap right now.

Good list. There are some additions that you could add.

1. The TRS 80 has several models, but three were distinct that offered different memory and could play different games. Model 2 had 32K, and Model 3 had 128k that many games were exclusive to the model 3.

2. Supervision needs to be added to the system list

3. There were several variants to the Commodore 64. If you are going to list variants to other systems, you might want to list ones to the C64. I know of at least 5 or 6 hardware cosmitic revisions alone(several in the logo on the system)

4. You might want to add the playstation yaroze North American model

5. The atari XE had several different models. You have the atari 400, 800, 1200XL, and the XEGS for starters.

6. you also have the bally home library computer system variant for the astrocade. It was the initial rare mail away version that came first.

7. You also have at least two cosmitic versions of the 7800. One with the expansion unit port and one without.

8. Last but not least, you cant forget about the tomy tutor :)

Player-2

yeah...should have already listed the 7800 variation and the supervision. duh :) The TRS-80's, the atari 8-bit series, and the Commodores are much closer to computer consoles than gaming consoles...so I left out any variations. I hate to start dealing with computer variants. The 1980's had a huge problem with "I am a computer...no, I am a game console" kinda stuff. I believe Tomy Tutor fell in there as well...but, you are right....it may need to be mentioned.
I do not know anything about the Bally library computer system or the Playstation Yaroze from North America. I will try to find out about those.
THANKS A LOT!!

by that reasoning the GB micro shouldn't fit either as it was released in 2004. And the GBA SP 2.0 was released in 2005. I wouldn't call that 2000-ish.

Mattel Aquarius for sure

How about the Cassettevision? Super Cassettevision? (these might be counted as import-only)

Yeah, but it was the end of the gameboy line....and not the beginning of a new line. It's a tough line to draw, becuase I do not want to collect for anything started after 2000. Then you have to start thinking about Vtech, etc.
My wife and I represent the 40 and 50 year old gaming crowd....I am going to stay as "classic" as I can with my collection. I have been collecting for two decades...and it needs an ending point now! :) :)

The Pippin was released in North America in vanishingly small amounts too, I recall.

(Also, you've still got the "pikachu edition" and "pokemon edition" GBC in there.)

Here's one, a rare handheld:
In 1983, Palmtex released the Home-Computer Software Super Micro Cartridge System.
