Alright.....I received an Xbox controller "S" today with my a purchased refurbished Xbox at Gamestop. I opened up the box with the system to find the controller new in packaging. Cool I thought...until I found it they're were no colors on the buttons, no Xbox logo, and some of the spacing in the typing was too big or too small (and a few cracks in the packaging). This is what it says on the back:
"Controller"
"The function of each button may vary depending on the games used.Check the specific game manual for more information".
REALLY weird...is the controller S supposed to have a green or black cable..and is it supposed to disconnect at the front?
I had played a duke before and it had a green cable and disconnected at the front, is the controller S supposed to do that (this one has a black cable, and does not disconnect in the front)?
So...what the hell is this thing?

Well like...is it an official third party controller...like Madcatz or Pelican? Because...it doesn't even have that on it...

Can you camwhore it a bit for us? A pic would help. Then we can get the torches ready.

No color on buttons...

Is that the normal thing it says on the bottom?

Is that what's supposed to say too?

Huge "MADE IN CHINA" sticker...odd.

Only problem i've seen is that the cord is stupidly short. I'd take it back and bitch at gamestop. They don't even have the breakaway ends...

Yeah I'd take it back too. If they're going to sell you a refurbished unit they damn well better have first party components. Are they even allowed to package refurb systems like that? Especially with a pirated pad. I imagine MS would not be happy about this.

That goes down in my book as incredibly lame. At least when i bought that one, i knew it was pirate.
If they give you *any* flack about returning the controller you could make the district manager's life very miserable by calling microsoft and telling them what happened.
The controller doesn't even meet microsoft's requirements for safety. Not only is the cord too short (we're talking roughly 4 ft), but it doesn't have the quick disconnect at the end. This is all assuming that the controller isn't just a firehazard waiting to happen. I'm half afraid to open it up...

Agreed. From what I know about manufacturer/store relationships. MS will throw a SHIT-FIT. Especially if this is a wider problem. The DM would lose his job overnight.

GUYS.
GUYS.
First things first. Relax.
Now ask important question:
Was it a GAME STOP REFURB or a MICROSOFT REFURB?
Two different things.
A microsoft refurb would not have come with a retail sealed accessory. They're boxed like retial new units.
A Game Stop refurb (white box with black and white printing) is a system refurbished at Game Stop. $79.99, I'm assuming this is what you bought.
It also means they can put whatever they want in the box. Usually it's a Microsoft Large, S, or Mad Catz / Pelican brand. Odd choice in that one. Looks like the same controller type from the company who does those knock-off PS2 ones in the yellow packaging.
Now, if you would like a VERY SMOOTH transaction, all you need to do is the following:
1. Just bring it back with your receipt, NICELY explain you bought the refurb and it had that controller, and would prefer to have a actual Microsoft S controller. Any employee worth their name tag would just go in the back, open one of the used decks and gladly swap out the controller.
The employee didn't put it there.
The DM didn't put it there.
Don't crucify someone for something they had nothing to do with. It makes both of our lives that less cranky.
JFHC.
Someone stop the sale on torches already.

Yes, they are allowed, as long as they call it used and refurbished, which is what has to be assumed given that Microsoft does not manufacture or even deal with original Xbox systems anymore!

Yes, but at least MadCatz and Pelican try to make their controllers as close as possible, feature wise, as the originals.
That one? I can find that same controller pad at the bootleg Chinese shops in town. (And they'll try to sell it to me for $40, goddamn scammers.)

Gotta love Gamestop's system packages.
Bought a Gamecube from them a few months back (right around the time they dropped to 40 used) and the controller was identical to a Nintendo one in every way, except where it would normally say "Nintendo"....instead, it says "Innovation".
I had a good laugh out of that. I'll be using that controller to play Smash Bros. Brawl on my HIGHLY INNOVATIVE WII

Well funnily enough I'm planning on going to the local Gamestop to buy a used xbox tonight for 80 bucks. But when buying used stuff I insist on opening it right there and testing it out first. Gotta make sure everything's in there, the xbox isn't modded (or has been opened for that matter), and friggin works!
