Just how many copies were made? I've heard 10,000 quite alot but recently on wiki I heard there were three printings adding up to 30000

I have heard 5000,10,000,30,000 Only sega knows for sure. One of the main reasons it so rare is that people just don't want to give it up.

Who knows how many copies are made, DP doesn't base rarity on how many people won't get rid of them, it is based on how easy it is to find whether it is for sale or not. They take into account all of the ones that people own as well as for sale. It's rare because the print run was somewhat small and the only place to really find it these days is online.

I hope that makes sense.

If the DP scale is on terms of availability, it should be one of the least rare games for the system. There are always eBay auctions for it, while titles like CONGO, WORLDWIDE SOCCER '98, THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD and especially DAYTONA NETLINK come on once in a blue moon. It's not getting the high prices because it is necessarily "rare", but more that it's 1.) a legendary title that has the reputation fo being obscure and 2.) it's commonly cited as one of the greatest games ever made.

The rules of supply and demand do not apply for this title, since no matter how many are on eBay simultaneously (and I've seen 4 go in the same hour), all will go for about $140 these days. DAYTONA NETLINK...yeah, I'll pay hundreds for it based on the rarity, but when I can find several PDS auctions at any given time, I refuse to pay top dollar for it.

And I didn't. (http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=110168973571&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=001) :D

PDS is still rare other than Ebay these days. It's a cash cow right now, they sell and sell because of popularity. Bounty Bob strikes back, Spiker for INTV and the Nintendo World Championship are cash cows on Ebay and sell constantly but are still uber rare nonetheless. This game is the same way.

The more a game goes for, the more often you will see it change hands. Because it's a quick $150 sale, people are much more likely to dump that game, than an equally rare game that goes for $20. That said, I think that's a part of why it appears often on ebay.

While I agree with you about it changing hands a lot, I don't think that explains why you don't see equally as rare games as much. Most sellers on eBay are not really video game collectors at all, just people pawning off things they find at other venues. They don't discriminate, yet I still haven't seen WORLDWIDE SOCCER '98 listed as a no-reserve auction, and CONGO, 3D BASEBALL and THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD have been nearly as scarce. I think we are all underestimating the production run of PDS, since it had several runs compared to the single runs that most of the last generation titles (like SOCCER, HOTD, BURNING RANGERS and SHINING FORCE III) all got.

I don't think Ebay can be the only source for rarity rankings. Congo is still available new from at least 3 prominent on-line retailers that I am aware of. Same with 3D baseball and Worldwide Soccer 98. I'll give you Burning Rangers, HOTD and Shining Force III, but those were released around the same time and probably had the same print run as PDS. Sometimes people just don't list on Ebay because it's not worth their time or effort on games that they don't think will sell for much.

well I dunno about congo but I own a bunch of those games. Congo is rare? I assume its not very good (movie was decent) a local shop has it cheap

I think Panzer Dragoon Saga is really just affected by high popularity that exceeds its general availability, like Dracula X for the PC Engine CD-ROM.

It's not really that rare. It has that sort of weird popularity/rarity ratio that causes many to keep their copy because it is actually a great game combined with an actual rarity (limited release/availability) that makes its auction price generally high.

If rarity means it is hard to find, that isn't quite true because there is always at least one copy for auction on ebay . . . because it is guaranteed to go for about $150 (like Dracula X).
