I just got my slim psp and I am very impressed. It is a very nice design with a great looking screen. I was just curious maybe someone here knows about the custom firmware thats out now will it run ISO's like psp games of the memory stick. feel free to talk about everything that has to do with this system on the thread.

$199.99 in the US-that is the Daxter pack unit (silver).

I, myself, won't buy one until the Star Wars unit is released. I am thinking about getting the Japanese Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core unit from NCS though!

What do you think? It's $399, but is limited edition!

Is the Crisis Core one a different silver colour to the normal one?
I'd be too scared to use it.

How much for the black edition? What's the pack-in? How long until you can buy it without any pack-ins?

right now black isnt available just silver but importing a black one will run you about 220-250.

Black one's in the UK are £129.99 (about $260) which is a con as it doesn't come with any other goodies ie. memory card, umd movie or game.

The piano black one is supposed to be coming out Sept. 24th and I assume that, since it will be the new "core" unit, it'll retail at $169.99 like the old core.

According to the local Gamestop(so obviously, take it with a grain of salt) the above quote is 100 correct.

Bad news for people in the US who want a different color than the piano black; unless you pick up a bundle deal, you're not going to be getting a non-black PSP. Take that with a grain of salt too, but they aren't on pre order lists anywhere and I tried to put money down on a white one at Gamestop AND Play'N Trade. No dice.(Since the BACK of the PSP is now the same fingerprint magnet that the PS3 case is...)

Anyone have concrete info on that?

I have a lot of homebrew on my regular PSP, and I know M33 released a custom firmware that should enable homebrew and stuff. I'm a bit too tired to type everything out, but here are some links and apps you might want to take a look at.

Custom Firmware 3.60 M33 (FOR PSP SLIM ONLY!), you also need an original psp for installation.

List of older things that should work on custom firmware:

And a SNES emu, requires CW

All very nice, makes it like a portable emulator machine that you can hook up to any tv.

If you check out their website (NCS - I don't have a link), they have pictures of it under news. I'll probably just buy it for the heck of it...

Thats pretty much what mine is right now, so I'm definitely thinking about picking up a slim. I'd trade mine in, but my LAN switch is broken, so I don't think it'll be accepted.

How are the controls on the new PSP? Any improvement on the original or are they about the same?

RyanMurf

Yes Huge difference. the D- pad is amazingly better than the old one. Since we are talking about custom firmwares, I have installed the ne m33 3.60. It is also amazing it can play all of your ISO's (psp games :villagepeople:) the only thing that has changed is emulators like NES, GENESIS, SNES, systems like that. They have changed because the slim psp wont boot 1.5 EBOOTs. The m33 team is still getting familiar to the new board architecture but only a few things need to be reprogrammed in the emulator to work. They have already got a list of compatible and almost compatible emulators on Psp-hacks.com

P.S. Get the component cables for it, its great for the emulators(SNES).

Is it more comfortable than the original? I would imagine since it is now flat instead of a rounded back it is not as comfortable.

I was at the DP store today and picked up a DS Lite. One of the guys there had a PSP Slim and allowed me to check it out. Seems a lot better and I can't wait to pick up a core unit. Hope they come in white sans Darth Vader.

I didn't like the appearance of the silver PSP2000, but I'm VERY glad to hear you like it, functionwise, RyanMurf! I'm holding out for the black one, maybe... still not decided.

Is it capable of playing PSX ISO conversions??

The official Sony PSP firmware is now up to 3.71, and the PSP2000 Silver Ice bundle launched with 3.60

I wonder what the later released units ones will come with...

RyanMurf
09-15-2007, 11:46 PM
Yes it plays all ISO's including ps1 games. And who ever was int he DP store today and tried out the slim, I was the guy int he back putting the custom firmware on it for my co-worker, so yeah Hey. And yes it is just AS comfortable then the fat one. Ill make a short video of my psp connected to a capture card and show you guys everything for those who are interested.

Why do people mention the color as "piano black"...are there many types of black? :D (just a small j/k, I like the psp)

I'm pretty sure Piano Black is just another word for the same color that the original psp was.

Good question! The only other black I could think of that is often used is "midnight black" or "onyx black".

Any aspiring art students want to answer this question?

It's not just the color black, it is the glossy finish that is customararily seen with the laquer on baby grand pianos....

Ummm, that baby grand looks to be lacking a lavish layer of laquer. ;-)

I picked up the Daxter package last week and I am pretty happy with my purchase. The buttons and d-pad fit my hands better, its much lighter. The screen seems to be pretty much the same, maybe the new one is a tad brighter. I want to hook it up to the TV so badly but nobody sells the component cables near me :( are they even out yet? I just wanna hook that shit up to me TV already.

I just toyed around with a PSP Slim today, and wow is it LIGHT! The original PSP felt like an expesive piece of electronics, this one feels "cheap" in comparison. I do like the weight difference though.

What kind of cables does it require? I thought it came with it.

I've heard that you can only play games using the component cables for the slim PSP and the composite cable will let you do everything BUT play games. Anybody been able to confirm this? Either way I'm getting the compnent but i don't unerstand why I wouldn't do games with composite....maybe because the games require 480P?

Games require 480p, period. I have no idea why UMD movies will play just fine over a 480i composite/component connection but a game won't. It's baffling really, and states it right on the back of the component cable box.

Doesn't affect me, but if I had bought one not knowing and didn't have right TV, I'd be awfully pissed.

Other than that, I'm happy with it. I think my square button is too loose, but it's a wonderful redesign even if it doesn't look like it.

yeah luckily I got component on my TV because the main reason I bought the re-design is to play games on the TV. Now I would have been furious if I went to go hook it up with composite and had it not work. I probably woulda returned the thing and continued to use the older one.

Does your tv support 480p? Theres plenty of 480i sets out there with component inputs too.

Saw this posted on CAG....PSP-2000 component AV cable for $11.17 shipped from DealExtreme.com. Isn't an official Sony cable, but still looks like a decent buy. I ordered my R4 from DX early this summer and didn't have any problems with them. Only problem is that the stuff is shipped from China, so it'll take about 3 weeks for it to arrive:

You've tried that? Because that's the opposite from everything else I've seen, the tv supposedly has to be 480p.

According to the Sony website, the TV output on the PSP Slim scales UP to 480p... 480i will work just fine.

It must be 480p to play games. Everything else can be done in 480i.

Got my cable today (Gamestop had them, Buy.com delayed my order).

The picture quality was quite good my HD CRT 36" set. Very similar to a PS2; but even adjusting aspect ratios I could only get about 60% of the screen full.

When plugged into my larger DLP the image was good but looked extremely smoothed out. I'll stick to the smaller set.

I enjoyed playing the games a good deal more even with the bars around them; I can only hope that future updates may have further enhancements to the video out.

I've heard that the sound quality sucks. Anyone want to confirm or deny this? Other then that It seems most people are pleased with the new design as far as comfort and controls. I'm debating about getting one.

The sound seems the same to me. The sound from the TV-Out is exceptional IMO.

Well, after a year or so of curiosity about the psp in general and now reading some pretty decent reviews and opinions about the new PSP Slim I went out and picked up the Daxter pack today along with Hot Shots Golf Open Tee (since I'm a fan of the Hot Shots series) plus it was $14 (GH). :D So now I'm just waiting for the battery to charge so I can check it out.
