Does this also mean the retirement of backwards compatability? Maybe that's an ulterior motive.

Yep, it's old news, and it's already been discussed here:

Is this really something that anyone didn't already know?

Come on, was somebody actually expecting another Game Boy product after the Micro and the fact that the DS has dominated the portable scene? Not to mention backwards compatibility built right in as well.

I own both a DS and PSP and still don't prefer one over the other, but I must admit, with all my business education, I never expected Nintendo to be outselling the PSP 2 to 1!!

Anyone else see my point?

I was however, correct about the Virtual Boy! I remind a close friend about that whenever the topic comes up. He thought the Virtual Boy was one of the coolest systems in the world. All that thing did was give me a headache...

now back on topic....

This wasnt old news to me, I'm kinda suprised I thought I'd be on my death-bed decades from now playing some-for-new Game Boy. But the DS has backwards compatability so yea I donno I"m done rambling.

WHy is the gameboy name so great? Are walkman's still all the craze? I guess Nintendo is finally getting there act together and actually naming their system's something creative instead of Super Gameboy Advance 64. They also stopped naming their consoles "entertainment systems". Gameboy advance is such a lame name anyways.

Only two Nintendo systems were named "entertainment systems." These were, obviously, the NES and SNES. This was because after the original crash of 1983, in order to market a video game console, you couldn't actually refer to it as a video game console and expect it to sell. This is the same reason why Nintendo called cartridges "game Paks" as well!

The NES, or Nintendo Entertainment System was so successful, Nintendo decided to call to it's next console, simple enough, the Super NES.

As with the Nintendo 64, it was originally suppossed to be called the Ultra 64, but a copyright infringement(I believe) caused a name change, much like the name of the "revolution" being changed to "wii."

Game Boy, was, at the time, the most creative name in Nintendo's history. It actually was a major marketing success story! In fact, even in US business schools, the Game Boy is brought up in some marketing classes as is the original NES. This is impressive, because before we had a "global economy" (i.e. a just a few years ago), most US schools would not consider teaching about the success of a Japanese based product!
