View Full Version : Anybody own a Japanese PS3?

Yesterday I bought a used non-working PS3 for $100. I figured that I could pay the $150 to get it repaired, and get a good 60 gigger for $250. Of course, I didn't bother to look on the bottom and notice that it was actually a Japanese unit. I called the 1-800 Sony customer care number, and they said because it's a Japanese PS3, they don't touch it. It's possible I could send it to Japan to get it repaired, but it likely wouldn't be worth the drama.

This PS3 came with no plugs or wires at all. Just the bare PS3 system. I have a PS3 power cord and video cable, so I tried plugging it into the PS3, and turned it on. When I turned it on, it made a beeping noise, and then the little red light flashed over and over. I had to flip the switch on the back to get it to turn off.

Here is my question: When I looked at the bottom of the Japanese PS3, I noticed that it said 100 volts 3.8 A 50/60Hz. The bottom of my USA PS3 says 120 volts 3.2 A 60Hz.

Is it possible that I need some special type of plug on my wall socket for this to work? Or a special type of power cable? If anybody has a Japanese PS3, and they are using it in the USA, how are you using it with USA power plugs? Or should it work fine? Basically, I'm just trying to find out if maybe I could still somehow get this thing to work.

I don't have an answer for you man. I just gotta say, you have *a lot* of luck with the 360 and PS3.

Oh, I do know that Juga had a Japanese PS3 before it bit the dust, ask him.

I thought PS3s didn't break?

Nope that isn't the problem, the same type of power cable should work, as long as they are the same shape.

This wasn't a case of bad luck. I knew that this PS3 wasn't functioning correctly when I bought it. The thought of getting a 60 gig PS3 for $100 was just too hard to resist. I knew that it would likely need to be repaired, and I also knew that Sony charges $150 to repair them. (if they are out of warranty). So I figured, $250 for a 60 gig PS3 is a steal, so I though, why the heck not.

The only mistake I made, was not making sure it was a US PS3. That was definitely my fault. It looked identical to any other PS3 I've seen, so I just figured it was a normal USA version. You don't normally think of Japanese and Europe versions floating around in California. The other PS3 that broke on me, was a stroke of bad luck, but that was just a random thing.

Agreed! I own lots of import systems and they are all compatible with US wall outlets.

I say talk to the old school gamer guy. He seems to know alot. All is not lost you could get your money back in parts. Maybe it was a bad firmware update maybe bad hard drive.

The hard drive if it and can be used in a laptop could recoup some. Tried to find what the beep codes mean. Unplug the harddrive and then powerup.

Good luck.

You know what.... That's something I haven't tried. Unplugging the hard drive and turning it on without a hard drive. I should definitely try that.

Did you know what the problem was with the machine before you bought it? That beeping is a signal that the XMB is crashed. Chances are the guy you bought it off was playing with firmwares, or switched off the machine in the middle of an update and corrupted it.

I doubt it'd be the hard drive, as the PS3 doesn't need a hard drive to boot up, and can use any PC laptop hard drive instead of the included one... My bets are on a corrupted flash....which means you're SOL until a downgrader is released.
