View Full Version : Is the 360 better then the Xbox (XBMC) for HD digital media?

I've got several friends with softmodded Xbox systems they use as networked media players for their AVi, Divx, Xvid, etc as well as music, shoutcasts ... you all probably know what I'm talking about. A friend of mine has never owned a console until he was allowed to play with a $50 softmodded Xbox used as a media server.

I've noticed that many HD softsubbed anime videos just can't be played on the Xbox. It seems to have hit a bottleneck for HD content.

Can a 360 be used in the same way as the old Xbox with XBMC? :?

I know that modded Xboxes only go up to 1080i, not 1080p. As far as I know there is no way to put XBMC on the 360, even with a chip. But the 360 will play HD movies, and there might be a way to stream to it.

HD media can be streamed on the Xbox 360.

The problem is not the Xbox or Xbox 360 it is the network.

You will need a Wireless N to stream it wirelessly, but the Xbox 360 does not have a wireless N adapter... YET.

Or a wired gigabit router to do it hard wired.

If you have a A + G router, you can stream High Def, but it won't necessarily be perfect. If you have a regular G router, then it will be herky jerky to the 10th degree, and pretty much unwatchable. Problem is, A + G routers are hard to find, and normally very expensive, and even if you get one, you'll still have hiccups in the video.

Or those that actually want their wireless adapter to be part of the Xbox360 and look like it belongs there.

Depends where you put the router!

Well yea, you could dump $100 on a wireless adapter or you could just buy a quality wireless router for less than half that price and be able to hook up your other consoles wirelessly as well (assuming you're not using one of them WRT54Gs with just the stock firmware instead of something that doesn't suck and supports WDS, like DD-WRT). I know! Who'd want to have four consoles hooked up wirelessly for less than half the price of the 360 wireless adapter? Madness!

The Official wireless attaches better and looks better. Nuff said.

Cheap people get ugly setups :)

I still don't know where you're going with this. The PS3 and Wii both have wireless connectivity built-in, so that leaves just the 360. What other consoles would I want to connect? PS2 (the PS3 is my PS2 now), original Xbox (mine is stored away)?

It's true that $100 is steep for something that Sony and Nintendo offer as a standard feature, but it's a much better alternative that running a 50 or 100 ft. ethernet cable through the house just to connect one console. Regardless, I thought $100 was too much and waited until my local Gamestop got in a used one. $69.99 - 10% (Edge Card). Not too bad and now I'm totally wireless.

The official wireless adaptor was probably the single best full-priced first-party accessory I've ever purchased, despite the cost. I despise the idea that you have to go that route, but it was worth every penny.
