ikaruga on a wii

So I just bought a copy of ikaruga to play on my wii but am having some issues-the game requires a memory card so I gotta get one of those but it should let me continue without saving but my wiimote/classic controller will not work! Do I need a gc controller also?

Yes, Gamecube games on the Wii require the gamecube controller.
