Is the Wii version worth $17.50? I would rather have the PS2 version, since you can use the D-Pad, but i have heard that using the analog stick on the Gamecube controller works just fine. Anyone confirm this?

I got the Wii version when it released. It's MUCH MUCH MUCH better when played with a cube controller. The Wiimote options for controls are some of the worst ever for the game.

Metal Slug Anthology is a great game, provided you like Metal Slug, but who doesn't???

I like the Wii version and find playing the games NES style is fine. And I own an MVS setup with a few of the slugs, so I can make a direct comparison. But your mileage may vary.

I actually like playing it NES-style. I got used to shaking the controller to throw grenades. Then when I tried a gamecube controller, I kept trying to shake it and realized having to press a button was a lot less convenient. (By shaking it, you can keep your finger on the fire button, which is nice.)

I have a (stupid?) question: Is it compatible with the Hori SNES-style pad?

If you like Metal Slug get Metal Slug Anthology I have it and love it, It's actually the first modern generation game I've bought new since Metal Gear Solid 2. When I bought Anthology for the PS2 it was $40. Normally I wait a year or two and buy it used for ten bucks, but thought I should pick up MS:A now becuase I didnt think I'd be able to find it later very easily. I dont know how using the WII remote would be with it, but if it sucks you can always use the Gamecube controller.

I actually put off buying the game because it only indicates on the back of the box that you can play with the Nunchuck and wiimote. It's nice to know you can use the Cube controller, but there is still no mention of whether or not you can play it with the Classic Controller. Can you?

Yes, you can use the classic controller. Gamecube setup is similar to Classic controller.

The GB Player one? Unfortunately not...See, it uses only the Control Stick for movement, and the pad registers as the D pad on the GC controller.

Good game, I don't know why people insist on bitching on this port. It's great, and If you can think of a Cheaper way of getting Metal Slug 2, I don't know what....

Also, MS6 is a great edition to the series. Second best in playability to 3.

I agree! You get 7 games for $40 (thats the new price people) and it always amazes me how gamers find a way to complain about something!

Go over to Japan. They have to buy each game in the series seperately (at least that is how it is for the PS 2 versions from what I understand).

Here we go again with DP revisionist history. There has only been one issue people "bitched" about regarding Metal Slug Anthology.

The main complaint isn't the price, it's the general shittyness of the Wii version controls vs. the PS2 version. If someone likes the Wii version of MSA...great. However, the reality of the situation is this...the PS2 version controls better. People can buy whatever version they want. It's not really that big of a deal overall. People who have played both versions (i.e. me and others) are simply offering advice.

It's not a matter of opinion. This is a fact. If anyone disagrees, please tell me how much time you've spent playing both versions.

Er, yeah, I didn't mean because of price, that was a little comment on the face value of the collection, not the quality between the ports.

I'd say PS2 for sure on this one. Mainly because you have many more control options on the PS2 + the added bonus of a regular PS2 controller if you don't want to get a hardcore arcade stick to play it.

Why? Metal Slug is one of their most popular franchises and last I checked the old Art Of Fighting and Fatal Fury collections had half the titles that Slug Anthology had. Art has 3 and Fatal Fury has 4 where Slug has 7. And releasing KoF XI at 15 is nothing special. Its one game in a series thats well past its prime, that gets little exposure here now that arcades are almost all gone and wouldn't have released at all if it wasn't for Sony having dropped the licensing rates down to nothing for PS2 releases.

Besides when they push more of these titles onto the Wii VC they will end up being more expensive per title, than if you bought the pack.

Yeah, I bought it for $16.96, but unfortunately the remote will not recognize the Hori stick when it is plugged into the base. I struggled through the first Metal Slug last night using that inane control scheme where you shake the horizontal remote to throw grenades and unlimited continues.

Well, at the very least, the Hori stick should work on Shikigami no Shiro III if I ever get a Japanese Wii...

While I much prefer the control on the PS2/PSP version of the game (looks good video out on a slim PSP too), I do own the Wii version ... releasing that version first was quite the smart move on SNKP's part ... as I wouldn't have gone that route if the PS2 version launched simultaneously.

I think that sadly, the best control scheme is the Horizontal Wiimote (NES PAD) style ... I actually found it pretty easy to toss grenades by shaking the controller (I'd give it a quick whack on the palm of my left hand) while simultaneously shooting.

Though, again, I do prefer a standard PS2 style control setup.

The price dropped sometime in January. I was shopping for the used psp games with the 25 percent off coupon. the sticker said 34.99 in Late Dec. When I went to buy it mildly surpised it rang up 17.99 and with the discounts 11.59.

I snagged a ps2 copy at a Gamecrazy that was going out of business last week for about $23 new. With a lot of shooters in the same genre (Contra, for instance) it feels like you could beat the game in one life if you played it enough to figure out patterns, and though I've played my share of Metal Slug in the past, it took two continue-laden runs through Metal Slug 1 and 2 last night to realize that it's pretty much impossible for the MS series. Sure, I can make it through the odd stage here and there without dying, but by and large, if I see the "mission complete" across the screen by the end of the level, I probably had to continue several times.

Then again, there's always the possibility (/reality) that I just suck.

I bought MSA on PS2 about a month ago for $17.99 used at a local Gamestop. But, on the same note, I've seen other Gamestop's that still sell the PS2 version used somewhere in the upper $20's.

I've seen the PSP version new at Gamestop for $19.99. The local Best Buy was also clearancing them out for around $20.

From various reviews that I've read about the game, the PS2 version appears to be the most technically competent. But once again, that's just hearsay, seeing how I've personally only played the PS2 version, so opinions will vary from those who own a particular version.

I happened to come across a used PSP version for $25 and the only downside I see with that version is the load times in menus before you actually get into the game. It's good, but has some weird issues. For one, you don't unlock the art galleries, wallpapers, and so on just by beating the games. You earn 'medals' by beating the games over and over that you then 'pay' to unlock stuff. So that's kind of crap.

The load times border right on the cusp of being annoying, but they seldom interrupt the actual gameplay. You get loading in bewildering circumstances: like on the character select screen... But overall, for straight ports of cartridge games, it isn't bad.

Just to toss my 2 cents in there, the PS2 version is the way to go. Metal Slug 3 looks amazing on my 47 inch LCD playing on the PS3.

kainemaxwell

There's maybe a quick 2-3 seconds of loading when you're selecting a character after using a Continue during actual game play for the PS2 version.

Does Gamestop have it new or used for $20? If it's used Best Buy won't care. And if it's new, Best Buy will require an advertised circular of some sort(like pretty much all price-matching retailers do) to verify the lower price. I think that I'm unfortunatly just going to have to get a used one at Gamestop or Blockbusters. But I hate buying used games, especially ones that are only a few years old.

Metal Slug Anthology is $19.99 new for both PS2 and PSP at Gamestop. However, at this point it's hard to find a Gamestop store that has the game used or complete for either system. MSA doesn't even show up on the website (which is of course down at the moment).

Sometimes, you can get away with a competitor's receipt at Best Buy or Circuit City if you bought it at Gamestop, but it's highly unlikely that they'll accept your word for it. If the associate asks a manager for approval, the manager will probably call the nearest Gamestop, ask if they have it in stock and you may or may not get the price match.

Are the new copy's for the PS2 sealed? If they are then $19.99 is not a bad price. But if they are "opened but still new", $19.99 is too much for something that's been loaned out among the Gamestop employees to sample with.

As usual, it's a mixed bag. I don't often see sealed copies at Gamestop too much, except if you're lucky enough to see it in that huge glass cases behind the registers. When I got mine, it was gutted but there wasn't a scratch on it. I don't think the guys at that particular Gamestop care much for anything that hardcore gamers would enjoy.

I still haven't found a copy of the PSP version, and that's after checking several Gamestops within a 100 mile radius.
