View Full Version : Am I getting a good deal?

I am buying off a member of these boards, an atari 2600 junior system, and a complete copy of Shining Force for the Sega Genesis all shipped for $60. I am pretty sure I am getting an alright deal, seeing as the shipping is included, but I only have atari games, not the system and was thinking what you guys thought about this deal.

Thank you for any input

Seems like a fair price to me. Shipping alone would be about $10 media mail and a lot more if he ships parcel or priority mail.

in my opinion, no, you are not getting a good deal.

i would say the edge goes to the seller...

Excellent deal. Five stars. The generous person who is selling it to you should get a fucking statue of him built.

Hmm, Charlie, I agree with you, I put more thought into it, and decided, it;s not what OTHERS think it's worth, it's what I think it is worth, and it is worth it to me, but thank you guys for your input anways...and umm, mystery guy who is selling to me, if you read this, I will send your MO on Monday:)

I would say it is a pretty fair deal. Shining force is worth at least $20 (goes for between 25 & 40 on ebay, plus the atari $30-$35 (I am assuming it comes with 2 joysticks and paddles, ac adapter & RF) plus shipping. I would say it is a very fair deal to you. Don't think that you paid too much! Advantage Starcade.

Yes, the selleris giving me a good deal, he says he likes me. So anyways he also said it would come with "several" controllers, however many that is!

You say that the seller is a friend. Keep in mind that I only said that this was a fair deal. He isn't doing you any favors with that price either.

More then 2 joysticks, and more then 2 paddles. Most first party, but a couple 3rd party joysticks are in it too...

... er um, at least that's what I'm guessing.

i feel the prices you quoted are on the high side.
if the jr was complete, boxed, i would say 30-35 at the most.
typically those things sell for 15 or 20 loose (w/ hookups)
i paid 25 for a complete one, and i felt i got screwed.

as for shining force,... i thought that was a common game anyway? is that totally complete?

Yes Shining Force is complete, and I am stil gonna buy the atari, for the simple fact, that I dont have it.

No disrespect to you, wberdan, but the prices I quoted were on the high side?? Maybe for people on this site, but try and find those games and a good atari system on ebay for that price and include shipping! If you felt you got screwed paying $25 for a complete shining force, I would disagree with you. Check the prevailing market on ebay, yes sometimes things go outrageously high on ebay, but if you have a quality game (which shining force is) it will command a good amount of $$$, especially complete RPG's. If you want quality, you have to pay for quality (most of the time), unless you find a great deal in the wild. I know the market pretty well (at least I think I do :D ), and Starcade let me say it again, you did get a fair deal.

i meant 25 for a complete JR system.. i paid way less for the shining force. if you are basing values on ebay, well, then it is a fair deal.

For most people, that is their only outlet for getting vintage video games, so that is why I based it off of that. BTW, a complete boxed 2600 jr for $25 is a good deal (I think)

Again, thank you for all your help and comments, I am buying it not for it's "value" I am buying it because I just realized, I am damn sick of playing 2600 titles on my emulator, that is why I wanted this.

I agree with this as well. As far as ebay prices and some of it's sellers obscene shipping fees I think you got a fair deal. If you're talking un-educated mom and dad prices at a tag sale then maybe it's a little high. But some people could look for a year and not find an Atari at a tag sale in their areas so is it fair to use tag sale prices as a basis of value?

Look guys, I just threw out a number and he said yes lol, nothing more then that.

I have NO room left to keep extra shit, and he told me that he wanted a 2600. I have a bunch of extras (garage sale gladiator, so of course I have tons of them lol) and I figured he would want a junior one rather then a crappy woodgrain one. I would have thrown in games but all my extras (doubles and label variations, not counting rare games and my endless E.T. collection) are in an auction as we speak. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3017020579&category=3528

$150 for that set is pretty good IMO, considering that all those games I got dirt cheap (two bits a pop at goodwill). Hopefully towards the end it gets bidded up a little more. Now excuse me while I go curse the gods of rain for fucking ruining my day of watching the Masters.

You should be praising the gods for sparing you from a day of watching GOLF ON TELEVISION.

Charlie, you were more than fair with him, I would be happy with that deal as well if I was in the market for those 2 items. Thats my belief.

no, of course not- to limit yourself to one area when you are trying to establish a "value" would be foolish. actually both of those items i bought off fellow collectors,... it wasnt mom and pop tag prices i was quoting.
i like to establish value by watching what people pay and sell items at on this board, at the phillyclassic, locally, and on ebay and online merchants.

"this board, at the phillyclassic, locally, and on ebay and online merchants"

This board is pretty much the only one of those places you mentioned where you might get a fair shake, and that's only because people here are nice in general (even you Willy lol ). I've heard that most of the vendors at PhillyClassic (and CGE) are overpriced. Most of us don't have access to speciallty game stores where you can get a decent price. For me, I've got Gamestop which no longer carries classic games, In Ta Games which gouges prices something awful, and Nielsen's Art & Games, the same guy who is asking for $50 for a boxed 2600 Pac Man (again, check out his website, videogamesfun.com). Most people at this board don't have a specialty shop around them that would carry things like Atari 2600s.

Ebay auctions are never a good way to determine value, because the prices of auctions only serve to tell you what is the most one person (out of thousands of collectors) is willing to pay for that item.

Most online merchants I've seen have outrageous prices... only good one I can think of off the top of my head is VideoGameConnection.

i would say that phillyclassic vendor prices are fair generally.. i sold stuff this year for super cheap-= i actually tried to sell 50 different nes games for $ 60 and no one would buy...
i got stuff at fair prices there... 3d minestorm for the Vectrex for $ 15... polar rescue for $ 25...
i think some people overprice at philly, but it seems that a lot of buyers are looking for goodwill type deals there... i had several people scoff at genesis games that were fairly priced, because goodwill (or gamestop) sells them for $ 1.99 -
