hey guys, I was just reading the above post about "which version of NBA JAM T.E. is best?"

well, I'm ALWAYS trying to figure out which version of a game is best. If I'm going to play a game, I like to make sure I'm playing the BEST version/port available. (Resident Evil Series anyone?) Final Fantasy's, Dooms, Bionic Commando's... the list goes on and on.

So I was thinking... why not make a new Forum subject entitled "Best Version of a Game".. or something of that sort. Maybe you guys could come up with some ideas. we could even have a sub topic which gives detailes on each port of a certain game, why that version sucks and why this port is best and so on. (with comparison screen shots if anyone has time).

I think this would be very helpful to everyone in this forum, and would be a great addition to the Internet as well. Instead of searching all over the net for reviews of different ports, We could all just come right here.

what do you guys think? Just a thought.

Hardcore Gaming 101 (http://www.hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com) (may it last ten thousand years) does a great job of comparing the various different versions of whatever games it covers. And there's also Retrogaming Times (http://www.tomheroes.com/Video%20Games%20FS/Retrotimes/retrogam.htm), which tends to have very comprehensive "The Many Faces of..." bits in different issues.

There's even a couple of "All Console" reviews on DP at http://www.digitpress.com/reviews/index_misc.htm .

It's an alright idea, Jorpho mentioned some good sites for that type of thing if your interested.

DP used to do a "random game o' the day" where we would often discuss which version of a game is the best.

I like the "Many Faces of" in Retrogaming Times because it tends to be totally comprehensive, covering *every* version of the game. But I've found myself disagreeing with their gold medal winner many times.

I don't think it is a bad idea but the thread would become really long and there would probably be too many topics (i.e. games) being discussed at the same time, meaning a lot of inquiries that have yet to be answered could get lost in the shuffle.

Want my advice? When all else fails, I'd opt with getting a game for the system it was released on first. Maybe it is not always the absolute best when it comes to graphics and some bonus features or added content may be missing but I feel a game usually controls the best on the system it was designed for to begin with. I may be in the minority but something like Resident Evil 2/3 or Tony Hawk 1/2 tends to control better on Playstation 1 than Dreamcast. It is pretty important to me anyway.

Of course I wouldn't use that ideology with every single game you buy that happened to be released for multiple systems. Really it is best to simply do your research online. Wikipedia may not be super accurate but most every recent game I look up on there has a few sentences breaking down the differences between various versions.
