View Full Version : The best ever light gun game...?
So whats your vote?
For nostalgia i'd go for Safari hunt on the master system but if it was a straight up best ever vote then i'd have to give it to Time crisis or point blank on PSX.
there - vote cast.

Time Crisis is still a great game. The PSone version adds more to the already excellent arcade game. Time Crisis 2 linked arcade cabs are great.
House of the Dead 3 cab wins just because it has 2 bloody great shotguns that you have to pump to reload. But all of the HotD games are good.
Silent Scope is excellent, but the home versions just can't replicate that sniper rifle and scope.
And Sega's Alien 3: The Gun. Or you could just play Duck Hunt.

Time crisis games are great of course. Virtua cop is cool. But for me the HOTD series is the best and four is really sweet I love the whole shaking the gun thing etc very very fun!

You guys think you're so retro voting for Duck Hunt.
Psh. I'm gonna say Target I on the Coleco Telstar!
Who's retro now, bitches?!
That's right.
(Target II sucked, though.)

Time Crisis 2.
It was hard enough without being too frustratingly hard for an arcade game, like the 4th one is...

Point Blank 3, no question. Anything else I've ever played I put down after a playthrough or two, but the PB games I can keep coming back to over and over

The original VIRTUA COP. There's a charm to those first generation Saturn games and their amazingly abstract polygons that feels a lot more authentic than the bigger, more detailed sequels like VIRTUA COP 2 and VIRTUA FIGHTER 2. VIRTUA COP is the light gun game in essence, simple and amazingly intricate at the same time. I remember staying up for hours trying to get consecutive Justice Shots.
Oh, and SAFARI HUNT pwns DUCK HUNT. No doubt.

Barker Bill's Trick Shooting (NES) or Elemental Gearbolt (PS1). The shooting mode in Wii Play is basically the spiritual sequel to Barker Bill's Trick Shooting.

ROFL Oh, how I love when someone says that. "there are the targets, shoot 'em, you have an assload of shots, it's fine" is better than a "quick reflex challenge" yeah, sure...

No, I'm more in the "three levels and several different characters worth of variety, a better gun and more detailed and responsive graphics" is better than a "fun but repetitive shooter with a clunky pistol and simplified sprites" camp.

That's modern, I vote for Shooting Gallery (1972) on Odyssey, even has the life like rifle, which needs to be 'cocked' after each shot:

My wife and I have always enjoyed two shooters at the arcade. Jurassic Park because it was private & it had a seat. It's great because we can prop our feet up, lean back & get down on some 2 player simultaneous shootin' action. Our other game is that firefighter one. I don't remember the name & it isn't exactly a shooter but you know. That one was fun too.
I've been thinking of getting a hold of some shooters for us to play together. I'm going to have to sort through the forum and see what system has the best.

My favorite is Operation Wolf on Master System, closesly followed by House of the Dead 2 on Dreamcast, spent a hell of a lot of time on both of those games.
Rescue Mission, Virtua Cop 1 and 2 are excellent too.

Brave Fire Fighters? Never seen the cab in person, and I'd love to have a go. Quite a novel use of the lightgun technology.

Yep. That's 'er name. We used to play it at this cool little arcade in Yokosuka, JP. That's where we used to play Jurassic Park too. Cool thing about playing Brave Fire Fighters in Japan is that they're really not ashamed of having fun in the arcade. We were young and would squat down, yell to each other (standing less than 2 feet apart) and just have fun with it. We had fun over there.
EDIT: Here's the cab for those of you who aren't familiar with it...

Ah, I have fond memories of the arcade in Yokosuka, as well. I remember playing Space Harrier and Excite QTE in there for hours just to kill time before a meeting with the guy that did tattoos for sailors. But then later I got a job at the docks and didn't have nearly as much time for playing in the arcade.

This is beginning to turn into an arcade thread, which quite frankly is the best route for gun games. This makes me miss the huge arcade that shut down around 1999 called Funscape. That was the most awesome place EVER to visit. 2 stories tall with an indoor putt-putt, lazer tag, 3D maze, bumper cars, motion movie rides and tons of arcades on both floors. On the second floor they had the bumper cars, pinball machines (in a dedicated room), 20+ various racing cabs (same games linked) and then a wall with a dozen light gun games. The few I remembered were Area51, House of the Dead and Virtua Cop 1 & 2. I really wish a picture were taken of the place, inside and out. They went over-board in spending and had to shut down, now there's a 2-story Gold's Gym there, hooked up to the theater-13 that's still opened. Man, huge arcade + movie theater was a great combo.
Now that I've gone off on a tanget there, I guess my favorite console games are:
Virtua Cop 1 & 2
House of the Dead 1 & 2
Area 51
Time Crisis 1 & 2
Jungle Hunt
Point Blank 1-3
No love for Duck Hunt here, just wasn't that special and everyone hypes it as such a spectacular classic today.

House of the Dead 2 (Arcade).
I do have to give a Runner Up aware to Rescue Mission (SMS).

There were two arcades there. (well, two that I frequented) One near the New Yokosuka hotel and one through the tunnel near the train station. Not the train station across the street from the Daia mall...you didn't hae to go through a tunnel to get to that one.

Now that I think about, I really used to enjoy "Gunblade: NY" in the arcade.
I think that was the title at least. Huge freaking gun that was a lot of fun to use.

It's close but I'd probably have to give the nod the Lethal Enforcers over Terminator 2. LE was the first light gun game I can remember that had things in the backround that could be shot for no reason at all, such as windows, steam filled pipes, and the gas tanks of stationary vehicles.

OperationSomethingOrOther......I can't remember the name, but it came out in like 98 and was played with a hugeass boozka type gun and a 50inch tv.
Also House of the Dead 1. Either teh Arcade or Saturn version, that game was tons of fun.

I used to play Gunblade using both 1P and 2P sides, a gun on each arm. :D That was always fun.
Also there is an arcade around Houston that has(had) Brave Firefighters... only played it once and I have to agree that it is the most unique lightgun cabs I have ever played. I like how they swapped out the reload mechanic with needing to manage the line pressure. Gave it a great control curve and never felt too easy, which some games in the genre are guilty of... at least to start.

T2 was a great game in the arcades, I loved the feel of that gun, and the jostle it provided felt really authentic, like you were in those trenches with the machines.
