First time poster here. I was doing some major housecleaning last week and among the items I re-discovered were an original nintendo nes systems with about 10 games--mainly action and adventure like the Super Mario series, Pacman, Zelda, etc. The unit works well but the buttons on the original nes controllers are sticky and don't always respond well to games. Earlier today, I was at a thrift store and I came upon an original NES unit with 2 NES Advantage Controllers for $20. The controllers were in great shape, I pressed the big red A and B buttons and they didn't stick. I wasn't able to plug anything in to see if they actually worked or not but cosmetically it looked good. I've never used an NES Advantage controller before. It looks and feels big/bulky. I usually play nintendo on the television next to the computer so I don't know how the Advantage joystick would feel in my lap or how the up/down left/right button would feel playing Super Mario and most action adventure games. Any comments or insights on the NES Advantage controller vs the normal one? Do the original nintendo game units themselves breakdown often? Would you all do a blind buy at a thrift store? Thanks

they give you a reciept, you should beable to bring it back, unless they have a
no return, as is policy......$20 is a good price...

I can't use the Advantage for any real gaming. It is great for winning fights in Blades of Steel, though. The buttons are just too cumbersome for me. The regular controllers you have are very simple, so you can probably get them working great by taking them apart and using a little rubbing alcohol on a q-tip around the buttons and rubber pieces, and an eraser on the contacts on the board.
For the NES at the thrift: I'd say 99% of the Nintendos you find in the wild are blinkers to some degree or another. I find that once you get the right method down for a given NES you can get it to work pretty reliably. There are always thorough cleaning and refurb methods as well. I'd have bought the NES for 20 if I needed an advantage for my collection, or wanted to make a quick buck, since they sell well (~$50) with a couple junk games on craigslist.

Once you get used to the size of the Advantage it is awesome and well suited to any NES game out there. I'd jump on that deal!

I never had the NES Advantage. I had the Max controller. Personally I think it was a terrible controller. I have used the Super Advantage for the SNES and have grown to love it. Probably depends on the games you play though. Arcade type games feel natural on the Super Advantage, especially fighting games like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat.

I got an Advantage recently, and I like it, but I wouldn't depend on it as my only controller. I thought it was really nice for racing games like R.C. Pro-Am, but I would never want to use it on Super Mario Bros. or Mega Man games, for example.
So, you might want to pick up the deal, but I would still recommend trying to repair or replace your regular controllers.

The advantage was the first controller I ever used, I coudln't stand the little rectangle controllers the system came with, very very durable controller and wonderfull for absolutely every game, hell I think i own about 7-8 of them from always picking them up whenever I see em.
