View Full Version : Every RPG ever made.... (stupid question)

There are lots of system based lists out there, but I'm wondering how impossible it is to try to compile an accurate list of every role-playing game for each console. I don't imagine for a second that there's a "EVERY RPG GAME EVER MADE" list, but I'm wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of a few by system, that I can maybe used to guide me in this crazy quest I am now on.

Thanks!

That's a good place to start.

I believe you can find lists for PS2 and PS1 in older posts. Not sure about other consoles.

and what crazy quest is that? to find the list of all the RPG's? or to collect or beat every RPG? or both

if your trying to collect/beat as many RPG's as possible its nice to know there are others out there with my same obsession.

the big problem with the list is its pretty subjective. my definition of "video RPG" is pretty liberal but there seem to be more and more games these days that really blur the line and make it difficult to define.

It's both. Though I draw the line at beating every RPG made. I'm not even sure that's mathematically possible. Though I'll revisit the possibility when the singularity hits. :P

But yeah, my definition of RPG is pretty liberal too. It's not going to be my sole collecting quest, just the one I devote the most time to so if a few "non-RPGs" get in there, no biggie. Though once my list starts to grow we should see if we have anything decent for each other. I love being an enabler. :P

You can also get a decent idea by going to GameFAQs, then click on one of the systems on the dropdown menu, and click on Role-Playing. GameFAQs separates all of its games first by console, and second by genre, so it's easy to get a list of every RPG for a system, at least by their definition of what an RPG is.

And though everyone loves sending visitors to other websites, I might remind you that the Digital Press Online Guide is pretty good for finding games by a particular genre. Try it!

I just tried:

PlayStation > U.S. Game Releases > Role-Playing Misc/Role-Playing [Find It]

and I got: "No results found". I tried a bunch of different options and got the same output. ;(

It's both. Though I draw the line at beating every RPG made. I'm not even sure that's mathematically possible.

Considering they make a new RPG every year, it probably isn't.

Also some RPGs take a damn long time to beat. I spent two months on Might & Magic for the NES (though I must say, the experience was worth it), and there are three games in that series.... IF you're limiting yourself only to console versions.

And good luck on the Roguelikes (Dragon Crystal for SMS and Fatal Labyrinth for the Genesis) as well.

what i ment to say was "beating as many RPG's as you can before you die."

i've been Consciencely working on this goal for roughly 8 or 9 years now. not makeing as much progress i would like though. stupid "life" getting in the way.

but i collect all games in the genre to. once upon a time i had a pretty complete PS1 RPG collection but then in a phase of stupidity and college induced poverty i traded most in to EB for a fraction of what some are going for these days. and as i slowly attempt to buy them back and rebuild the collection i'm painfully reminded of my stupidity.

as for rpg stuff:

1) gamefaqs rpg lists are very good. although there are some mistakes and unreleased games. And the biggest gamefaqs mistake is that they coount some none-rpg games as rpg's and some rpg's as none-rpg's and put them in strategy and in adventures.
2) www.rpgamer.com . pretty nice site. many info
3) www.rpgfan.com . very good site. one of the most interesting and extensive stuff there.
4) http://c-games.info/ - site of a mad polish guy. check the screens.
5) http://www.rpg.bajtnet.pl/index.php another site of another polish madman
6) www.jrpg.org - the site of russian madman... ahem... me.... lol

Wow, I looked at your collection and that's mighty impressive. Any chance of you bequeathing all that to me in your will? Oh, and on an unrelated note; how slippery are your stairs?

Thanks for the suggestions though guys. I've actually got quite a lot to go on. *Waves goodbye to life*

Ahaha!! thanx bro!
Yes i've been collecting rpg and jrpg games for nearly 12 years so i've amassed quite a lot. I can PM you complete lists of what i have i guess they will be of great help to you since i collect nothing but rpg's... lol
Unfortunately it is impossible to buy all stuff as originals (the lifespan is so short and the funds are so low dammit..), but in originals + copies i guess i have one of the biggest collection in the whole world. These pictures in my signature are just the top of the iceberg.

No question is stupid. I'm an egotist and I'm telling you that!

Anyway, your best bet is to start with the collector's guides (DP Guides and others) then start searching the internet as well.

Are you interested in both Japanese and PAL releases or just US games?

I should probably be interested only in US releases as I speak neither Japanese nor British, but I do hate my wallet so bring 'em all on.

Actually, I have played through a few Japanese RPGs (Mother 3 currently) and don't mind the language barrier. I'm not getting the full experience, but FAQs are pretty helpful.

Dark_Sol, I just browsed your site (JRPG), which is great, but on your encyclopedia, you use screenshots that come from other sites. The minimum you can do is to write from where you got them (like "screenshots courtesy of..." + link to the website).

I notice the screenshots for Wachenröder and Sorvice (Sega Saturn) come from www.satakore.com

---------------------------------------

It is difficult to have lists of RPG games as there are a lot of different types of RPG: RPG, A-RPG, S-RPG, Board-RPG, Racing - RPG,... then you have Adventure games which can have RPG parts in them.

PM me with the screens you want to be taken off or the credits to be written. The encyclopedia is too big and some of the games were filled long ago so i don't actually remember where the screens came from. And speaking about abandonware games i guess it's almost uselees to speak about courtesy. People are free to use screenshots from my site on their sites.

I know I might have DPers banging my door down for saying something like this but I will anyway; I just find that RPGs give me more bang for my buck. I could justify spending 200 dollars on an ultra rare 50 hour RPG but I can't for the life of me see myself spending that much on a Neo Geo cart (as awesome as they are).

Then again, it's probably just a product of it being my favorite genre and my limited income. I'll get back to you in a few years when I've escaped the higher education money pit and am earning some real coin. I'll be eating just as little, but I'll be surrounded by glorious plastic cartridges. :D

i acually thought about how i should phrase everything. i wanted to say something and point it out but i didn't want to come off as being a jerk.

but seriously Wolf, you seem to of picked up American and Canadian pretty well so i don't think British should be any trouble for you to learn. j/k

I do agree with you to a point on RPG's and the general "bang for the buck" although i also have to say that personnaly once i beat an RPG i generally don't go back to it. where as a shooter i'll keep replaying so over time i probibly get more milage from that genre

I'd love to start focusing on my RPG collection again but lately i've just been consumed with my Modded systems and console hardware in general collection as well as NEC collecting.

Along these lines; I rented my first game a week ago. Heavenly Sword was reveiwed as being way to short so I spent, $7.99 to rent it for five days and was worth every penny. I'll buy it later when I see it preowned cheaply and play it again at the highest difficulty.

Same goes for Halo 3. Bought it for $59.99, got a $10 gift card with purchase (Blockbuster), and will trade it in for $35 soon; $15 is worth it, you know it will be worth nothing in a year or two because there are so many copies.

When I return Halo I am hoping to find the new Growlanser for the PS2...so it's all good.

Below is a rather unorganized list I've compiled.
It's missing a ton of western-developed releases, but I'm pretty sure it has just about, if not, all japanese-developed releases. I was very open with my interpretations, and many non-RPGs are on there. I think we should work together and make a definitive list for the serious collector... and possibly include a mini-list of "Game a Role-Player would enjoy" or "Borderline RPGs". Would anyone like to work with me?
