I just recently got my Famicom from a friend when he came back from Japan. He only picked up Mario 3, since it was cheap and one of my favorite Mario games. I love it, but since that's the only game I have, I'm starting to want some more to play!

SO....since I don't really know a lot about Famicom games, can anybody recommend some? I really enjoy just about anything (which probably doesn't help). Anything rhythm related, mario-esc, shooters, or games that are just fun to play where you don't need to know japanese. I'm sure I can probably find the games alright, I just need some help with names of good games. Thanks for any recommendations people have!

Crisis Force (Konami Vertical Scrolling Shooter, some of the most impressive graphics on the Famicom)

Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffiti (Cutesy Splatterhouse Game, not that great but interesting if you are a fan of the series)

If you want to play with English guides on the internet then I will suggest Mother & Sweet Home. In general I cannot stand RPGs but these are 2 of the 5 or so RPGs that I like (not just Famicom but any systems RPGs).

If you are a fan of Contra, the Famicom version has features that the western release doesn't, such as cut-scenes and an overworld map. Nothing to write home about really, but it does make it the definitive version.

Ninja Ryukenden (Ninja Gaiden) 1-3 because the Japanese boxart is so nice.

I'll Recomend Holy Diver difficult game but it plays like castlevania.

I find it to one of the best games that irem made for the famicom.

Btw i notice,Family Computer recomend,Ninja Ryukenden 3 that's one title that's kind of hard to come by.

I'm still searching for a copy of it for myself cib of corse.

Fans want it since it's easier compare to the nes version.

Thanks for the recommendations! I'll have to check some of those out. My collection needs to grow a bit for that system.

Bump! I forgot to recomend another famicom title.

The Goonies unlike part 2 this one is more straight forward..and no puzzles in it either.

I find it to be the one of best lincensed game for the famicom.

If you never got to play it in the arcades it's worth picking up,if your a fan of the movie.

Here's a video of it in action.

I have The Goonies for Famicom, but I find it a pretty lackluster game. I beat it after a couple hours of playing it.

I guess if you like really old platformers then it is ok, but I think this title always gets brought up due to the fact that it is a western license without a western release. There are a ton of better Famicom games out there.

I think the goonies is decent while it is short...it's some thing ya can play for a quick burst or two.

I play it now and then and becuase of that plus i all ways, play it again to see what items i have missed.

While it is loosely based on the flim i think konami did a good job, making a game out of it.

Btw it had a u.s release in the arcades on the,Nintendo playchoice 10 and on vs cabs as well.

When i was a kid i got to play it on the vs.

I never beat it then...but when i found out you could play at home on the, Famicom it didn't take me long to get a copy of it cib.

Akumoju (sp?) Dracula Special Boku--this is a spin-off Castlevania parody. It's more of a kid's game as it's very easy. You play as Alucard and everybody looks superdeformed. The first level boss is a KKK member, complete with swastikas on forehead. It's easy, but fun and interesting if you're into Castlevania.

Also, speaking of Swastikas, if you like Bionic Commando you may be interested in seeking out the Japanese version. I don't know what it's called but I think it translates to "top secret: the Resurrection of Hitler". It's pretty darned interesting.

Devil World is an interesting game. I believe the main character is a predecessor to Yoshi (listen to the sound he makes when his egg hatches). You're trapped in hell and you have to do things like pick up crosses and use them to burn baddies or pick up bibles and thrust them into a big tomb in the center of the screen. The gameplay is kind of like Pac-Man, and it's a very early title, so don't expect too much. However, it is kind of fun and really somewhat offensive to a US audience. The game is a first-party Nintendo title, and it's one you don't hear much about--probably because Nintendo tries to sweep this one under the rug.

I know this is late but just try picking up your favorite NES games in their Japanese version. I do this with all my import systems and have found it to be very enjoyable.

I find this pretty true as well. Sometimes it's not worth it because the two games are identical (like Dr. Mario), but for the most part, you'd be the surprised by the differences. I think that in several cases (like Zelda II and SMB2 vs. Doki Doki Panic) the U.S. actually got the better game.

And in the case of Bad Dudes and Contra--the Japanese famicom versions have extended/extra cut scenes. I heard that Salamander(Life Force in the US) has four different endings but I've only beaten it once so I can't confirm that yet. But still, sometimes I'll enjoy playing the Japanese version just for the cool voices, like Syphon Filter for the PS1.

A couple u.s. release that I suggest finding the famicom versions of

Tecmo Bowl - different rosters than the U.S. version
Softball Tengoku - released in the U.S. as Dusty Diamond's all-star softball but the japanese version has more oddball characters like the witch that was in the american version

Also the Ninja Gaiden series and the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game. Why? Because they are hard enough to get thru in the US versions so why not just play thru them in Japanese. It's not like they can get much harder.

Does anyone know if theres a Japanese famicom version of Gun.smoke? It seems like I've been looking in vain.

You probably have becuase I don't think it was a cartdridge. I know it was released for the disk system, but I'm unsure about a cart. Only the most successful disk games, like zelda, got a port to the cart system, so there's a good chance that the cartdridge doesn't exist, although I don't know for sure.

You might be right. I've been looking for years and I know that the disk version exist. I just thought maybe a cartridge version existed as well.

As Graham stated it's only on the famicom disk system.

It was never released on cart for the famicom even though the nes got it.

Interesting how some games that are on the fds were, converted to cart for the nes.
Btw i have a fds myself and i still need to get a copy of gunsmoke for it :o

You can find them pretty easily on ebay for a very reasonable price. Good luck.

When I first saw this thread that was the first title that came to mind. I'm not an accomplished collector of FamiCom games, but that is definitely one of the high points for the system. 'Tis a shame they couldn't adjust the story somehow to release it to the US...

I've spent years trying to figure out what the Nutcracker theme has to do with Satan.
