Crossover cable if you are going to be playing offline.

Is it that simple? Just need a crossover cable and then just go through the Halo 3 menus?

Should be, its that simple with linking other games with the 360. I've done it through a router/switch before as well.

I don't even know if you need the crossover cable any more. You might just be able to hook them up via a regular ethernet cord. Might want to buy one just to be safe, though. They're like $15 at Staples.

How would they "talk" without a crossover cable....

You need one or a switch/router then you don't need one...

I'm pretty sure that the 360 is set up to be able to use a normal ethernet cable as a "link cable". A crossover cable would also work, I think.

Some electronics are starting to be outfitted with ethernet ports that are able to sense what cable is being used, and what is needed and are able to configure itself around what it senses. It's called Auto-MDIX.

I'm not really sure about the 360 though.

It shouldn't even need that; it'd just be a matter of seeing which port was in use...

New 360s, at least the launch units, have an Ethernet cable in the box that works for system link or LAN connectivity ... meaning autodetection as mentioned above. You could connect 4 together through a hub for 16-player mayhem, if it's like the previous Halo titles.
