I didn't think I was an FPS fan until my old roommate convinced me to play GRAW2. After some initial frustration learning the controls I kinda dug it.
Then last weekend in prep for Halo 3 he convinced me to play some Halo 1 mulitplayer with some friends. I'd tried Halo before but wasn't able to get into the story line...but the multiplayer reminded me a bit of GoldenEye for N64 and before I knew it I was actually winning. With a bit of Halo 3 envy this week I decided to give the Halo 1 campaign another try. I have the Halo Edition Xbox after all.
I'm not very far - I have it set to Normal and I die all the time. I'm only at the part where MC is rescuing Captain Keys. But I'm very impressed by how well the game seems to hold up. The graphics still look great, the controls are very responsive and I'm slowly getting into the storyline. The enemies are challenging which is a nice change of pace and the Ai marines are not great but they are better than other games I've played (hello, getting stuck behind crates).
So far my favorite part was using the sniper rifle to clear out the cargo bay on the covenant ship...but like I said I think I'm only on Level 2. Anyone else play through this one recently? Don't worry about spoilers. I've got a pretty good idea how this one ends. ;)

Wait until you get to "The Library". You'll love it.

I just beat this a couple days ago. I agree, it's a great game and holds up well. Unfortunatly Halo 2 isn't grabbing me the same way that the original did. In the beginning it's awesome, but I am not enjoying it as much now. Ah well. The second half of Halo 1 wasn't my favorite either. The library... oh man.

I also tried it for the first time this year. Having acquired my first XBox last Christmas, I was surprised by how good the graphics were and how good the gameplay was. Still haven't gotten around to playing Halo 2 but that is only because I am slow to finish games sometimes and there is no point playing the sequel until I've finally went through the first one.

Whenever I buy an Xbox, as much as I wasn't impressed with playing Halo at friends houses I'll still make it one of the games I pickup right away. I've not had the chance to play through the single player and it's one of my dads all time favorite shooters (up there with Doom 2, Wolfenstein 3D and Duke Nukem). I'll also need Halo 2 for when I need to advance to the next game because it seems when I get a FPS, I'll play right through it.

I'm just getting deep into it recently. There was one part I always got stuck on, then I lost my save when I switched to 360, then lost *that* save when I got the 120 gig hard drive.
It's not a game I come home dying to play, but there's something comfortable and familiar about it now.

Me too. I never had an XBOX, so because I saw it at CC for $10 I decided to give this a try. I think I understand now why this was so popular, especially as a launch game. It's so well done. It really holds up well.
I am playing on Normal and I am just finishing up the Library. Yes, a HUGE pain in the ass.
The question I have for you guys who love Halo is....
should I bother with 2 just for the campaign mode...or should I just make the jump to 3 and start playing online?

Love the recharging health meter (it is genius) and even the handgun you start the game with. I gotta play it this weekend, so I can get a little closer to completing it.

I just played through both Halo and Halo 2 a few months ago for the first time. They are both really good. I expected to be underwhelmed based on the fanboy hype that has been heaped on the games, but I was surprised.
You'll want to play Halo 2 to get used to dual wielding weapons, as well as learn some of the new weapons, like the Beam Rifle (Covenant Sniper Rifle), and new enemies, specifically the Brutes.

I'm horrible at finishing games, but I finally finished the original Halo last night (as most of you, because I just got Halo 3). Was about half way through the Library until my original Xbox crapped out a few years back and it came back to me with an empty hard drive, so I gave up on progress. Still an exciting ride though, and I started a new run through of Halo 2 last night as well.
I really just don't understand the fanboy-ism of the game...it's a very good FPS, not much more than that. Not like the second coming of Jesus or anything. But taken as it is, it's enjoyable.

I bought the first Halo but I could never get into it. I really haven't cared about any shooters though since Duke 3D. Though I did spend some time on Quake III when I worked at Activision. Whenever I get a new tv for my room I'll have to give it another shot. I should probably finally get Live too.

Remember that you're seeing Halo through "2007 eyes". In 2001, this game was groundbreaking for a console FPS. That's were most of the hype came from. You have to keep that in mind.

If you care about the Halo storyline, you should play 2. A lot of shakeup occurs in that one, and Halo 3 doesn't really explain any of it.

I really just don't understand the fanboy-ism of the game.
Is that because you can't understand the fanboy-ism of *any* game, or is this a Halo only thing?
I haven't gone back and played the first two Halo's but I've been thinking about doing so as I go through Halo 3.
What I loved about the original was definitely the graphics, the story (especially the Library), the way they break up the gameplay with driving bits, and the music.
I really liked that the cutscenes (in all 3 games really) never seem to take too long to get to the point. I *hated* MGS 2 because of that by the end of the game. I've never played another MGS game because of it.

I'm about halfway through now and really digging it. The game has kind of a steep learning curve but I appreciate that the Ai enemies will retreat and hide rather than taking your shots over and over. I just finished destroying the Pulse Generators.
My friends had managed to keep the Flood a secret - holy crap! The first they started attacking me I was pretty freaked out. Can't wait to beat this thing.

Although I grew to hate he Flood (Library) it was a pretty good twist to introduce a whole new enemy at a point in the game where you are already comfortable with the current set of baddies.

Good for you, I'm kind of in the same boat. I had played multi-player Halo 1 since it's come out but no more than a dozen times. Well about a month ago I got an Xbox, 8 loose games, 4 complete games for DIRT cheap off my cousin who just bought an Xbox 360. Included in the eight loose games was the original Halo, and Halo 2. So about 3 or 4 weeks ago I started playing threw Halo for the first time as well. I then got bored and stopped playing.

I just beat Halo 2 for the first time a few days ago. I think it kind of sucked. I loved the beginning when you are on earth, but after that it went downhill. It seemed like I was just doing the same things over and over. The brutes were really annoying, and there were (of course) tons of them.
I did manage to get the scarab gun though, and played around with the soccer ball for a bit. That was good fun, and the sense of accomplishment when finally getting the gun was quite satisfying.

Ironically enough, I thought Halo: CE was horribly generic (decent, but derivative) and my favorite level in the game was the Library.
How the hell that happened, I don't know. I played that level through about ten times.
I remember when I told people that the levels were the same thing copied and pasted over and over again in the game, and I was told I was "wrong." Yeah, ok.

I had a friend in Washington who played a lot. (Cookieman77 is his Halo handle) We used to get together and play, it was a lot of fun. Halo is a quality game. Until then, I had only played Red Faction 1 & 2 so it was quite a step up from what I had played. (I still dig RF 1 though) Once I get a hold of a nice HDTV I'll invest in a 360 & Halo 3.

I just started playing Halo 1 and I"m stuck on the alien ramp. I'm not a huge FPS fan, but I have enjoyed this game so far. The vehical took a little getting used to.

END SPOILER
Oh. My. God.
So after all that, the final level is driving a poorly controlled vehicle through a narrow tunnel while every enemy in the game takes cheap shots?
What crap. I can't think of a good game that has a worse ending.

Halo 3 SPOILER (Highlight to read)
Then don't play the last level of Halo 3.

I played through Halo 1 near the beginning of 2004 and i thought the story was awesome. Somehow i managed to go that long without learning about the flood or the real purpose of the ring.
If you want to hear the story behind halo, listen to the commentary for the videos on the H3 legendary bonus disc. Cool stuff.
