I really wanted to put a post in the buyers/sellers/traders section, but I just could not find such a section so perhaps here is just a good of a place as any.

Several weeks ago I got 7 banana boxes full of Commodore computer stuff for only $20.00. They wanted $50.00 for it, but it was a Sunday afternoon and they said they was going to have to toss it or something like that and they really wanted to get rid of it. Luckily it also had a few cool Intellivision and Atari 2600 items in there as well which made my $20 worth while right there, but my questions is about the Commodore stuff.

There was a LOT of Commodore 64 games (about 30 with the boxes still) so I could not resist getting it to relive my youth of when I had a Commodore 64. I've always regretted giving it away. But when I got it home, I found a lot of stuff of which I had never seen before. For example a program that works like windows, 6 disc drives (4 of which I've never seen before), dozens of odd cords, strange electric gizmos, printers, modems, some commodore 128 stuff, lots of odd business programs and documents, etc. etc. It's way beyond my simple setup of the 64 keyboard and disc drive hooked up to my TV. I know I'll need help to get me though all of this when the time comes, but my big trouble at the moment is that it came with two Vic 20s and not a single 64 or 128...

Now I am unsure what to do. I assume I cannot use the Vic 20s with this stuff, correct? It's highly unlikely that someone modded their Vic 20s to go this or perhaps that's exactly what had happened? I'm clueless about this and found it odd to get all this, but no 64 or 128.

So, I should try to get either a 64 or a 128? I honestly really don't care to do anything other than game playing on it. If it's recommended to get the new keyboard, I really hope to find someone here to provide me with one that they know does work and for a reasonible cost. I did not want to go the ebay route as I'm pretty sure I'd get zonked and I rather deal with someone here who has a good reputation with other gamers. Also someone to be as kind as to assist me when it comes time to put this mess together should I come across troubles.

At the moment, I'm thinking that a 128 would be better to get as they load the 64 games up faster, correct? I remember hating the load times as a teen. Then again in my mess somewhere could be devices to speed up the machines and I'd not know it. I'd probably need a little advice on that as well.

Anyway, I know I can do C64 games on modern computers and emulations, but it's about retro love here and I really wanted to get this up and going with the other retro systems that I currently have.

Thanks!

Sounds like you got a steal.

First, there is an obvious Buy/Sell/Trade forum. You may not be seeing it for some reason. It says you have a join date of 2005? but only 22 posts? Some of the forums are likely restricted for you at the moment...not sure waht will get them back for you...maybe simply posting will do it.

There are some serious C64 dudes here who will likely give you good answers. I can only suggest things...

I'd do with the C128 or a C64 with all the goodies (fastload cartridge). Load times are gonna' happen either way.

You will likely need to post some pics to get the best answers, and we'll want to know what games you managed to snag...

Also you might look at getting one of the Commodore monitors off of ebay to be complete...

Some will still tell you to go with the emulation. C64 emulation really is fantastic...I think you need to do both becasue many C64 games you/I want to play are tough to find unless you want to learn to make your own 'copies', which is tedious.

While the cartridges and software of a Vic-20 won't work on a C64, everything else *will*. Disk drives, printers, modems, joysticks are interchangable between the two machines.

A 128 would be faster than a C64 at loading *only* if you're in C128 mode (*)(which is almost never unless you're doing some sort of higher-end application not playing games). You'd be best off to get a fast load cartridge - Fast Loader by Epyx is good if it's cheap, Super Snapshot 5.x is awesome if you have the money to spend.

(* this asterik here cauz I know under really really really rare circumstances, a game will kick into 128's burst mode to load stuff but it's so rare that it should't even be mentioned :))

Sounds like you got GEOS or GEOS 128. Nice thing about that is that there is a site for anyone that wants to try it, can download the whole install LEGITIMATLY for free. The manufacturers have made a registration system, so it's not Public Domain, but is available.

If you can get model numbers off the drives, I can tell you what they are. I'd also like to replace a failed drive I have, so I might be interested if you are.

I don't see a Trading forum either, but then, I just joined, too. :)

Agree on the Pics, would be helpful.

The Trading forum only appears after you've been here 10 days... it's to stop fly-by-night joiners from just spamming it with what they have to sell ;)
