If you mean an AES system, I have one. If you want to get into ridiculous amounts of money invested, sure, pick one up. If you are looking to play a few titles, get a JAMMA board, and go the MVS route (generally cheaper than AES). It's really up to you, how much time/money you want to put in to your collection.

As far as gameplay, between MVS and AES, they're virtually identical games. Maybe a minor diff here and there, but it's just that, minor.

All i want it for is for all the metal slugs (ungodly expensive)

Ive also been looking forward to a neogeo pocket color for about 6 months now (i played on an emulator and its pretty fun.)

If playing Metal Slug is all you're interested in then you're probably better off with one of the compilations for the modern systems. If you must have the original versions. a Supergun/MVS or consolized MVS is your cheapest route. Those will cost about $3-400, but the game carts are much cheaper. That stuff isn't pretty to look at either.

Or you can go big time and get yourself an MVS cabinet...

The AES is the home version, not the arcade one (MVS). I'm moving this to the Classic Gaming forum.

If you want to play Metal Slug, the most expensive way to do this is by buying a home (AES) console and the games. the cheapest way to do this is by buying Metal Slug Anthology (PS2 or Wii) and somewhere in between is to buy the arcade (MVS) cabinet and the games.

Advice: don't buy a Neo-Geo home system if Metal Slug is your goal.

What Joe said!^^

The USA Advanced Entertainment System is the most expensive way to go about playing Neo Geo. Japan AES is a slight cheaper option but still pricey.

For Metal Slug playing, get:

Actually, the *really* cheapest way to play (assuming you HAVE a PC...which is quite possible since you posted here!) is to get one of these:

And learn about the magic of M.A.M.E.! :)

as nice as anthology and roms are you still can't beat playing neo games on their original hardware. You have no execuse not to have a NGPC they're so cheap! I bought mine with 30 games (loose) for 90 bucks shipped. It rocks a true portable the batteries last forever (40+hours)

I wouldn't get an aes though get an MVS cab its the best way to play these arcade games (emphasis on arcade!) and its cheaper to.

The anthology collection is fantastic on PS2 (the button layouts are a bit funky on the Wii version), and I'd bet that it's going to be one of those contemporary SNK releases that winds up sooner rather than later - out-of-print, hard to find, and too expensive to justify purchasing in the future. I'm a bit bummed I never picked up the King of Fighters 2000/2001 - 2002/2003 collections, as they've made their way onto the rare PS2 list. Hopefully SNK follows up their Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting anthologies with a King of Fighters one.

Neo Geo ports on current/last gen consoles are MUCH better than Genesis/SNES ones of years gone by ... they likely even contain more than 80%-90% of the original rom coding.

The Metal Slug series is a fantastic reason to want to get into NEO-GEO, but like others have stated - the level of expense is pretty high when there are other comparable options out there.

Yes, yes, yes!

Bought it BRAND NEW the day it came out! Still own it! One of the few systems I never put in storage because I play it to this day! Does that answer your question!

Where did you get that deal? The only thing close that I ever come across is a couple sellers on Ebay with tons of negatives, offering the system plus18 games of "thier" choosing. Nuts to that.

There has been a flooding of people selling NGPC with like 12 games with out boxes for a while now. They are all ok games and a great way to start off, at least I think so.

If I could, I would go with the Arcade over the AES any day. You just need the room, but I just think all the pluses fall in on the MVS's side instead of the AES's side. All the AES has is portability, but for a large price tag. If you really want a small system like the AES instead of the MVS cabinet. You might as well get a AES with a MVS converter and buy the Metal Slug Carts. That way you have a whole arcade system that you can ship across the united states for a tenth of that of an arcade. While retaining that authenticity that you are after, kind-a cross platform, but it is like putting peanut butter chips in cookies instead of chocolate, just as good in my tastes, just a little off though.

I askeed the same question, plus about a dozen others having to do with the topic. After readings everyones responce, and weighting the pro's and con's I picked up an AES and I am very happy with the investment. Here's the thread I started if you'd like some more information.

theres tons of consoles i want (sega saturn, master system, gizmondo (no im not kidding) CD-i, Wonderswan, Atari Lynx 2.... just to name a few) But some of them are really hard to find. I really don't care how bad they are....i just want it just to have it.....
here is someone i found about a year ago.... he reviews classic stuff. Look at some of his videos. its pretty "rad."

Yea, it is a lot of money to throw down for a video game, and console. So you have to make sure that the AES is something you will really enjoy and think of it as an investment. Like I said in my previous post I asked the same question and many more about a month ago I believe, and then decided I wanted one despite the cost, so I picked one up about a week ago, maybe a week and a half and Im very happy with the investment and I think if you decide to pick one up you'll be happy as well.

Well, I'm a fan of the 1940s series and it's a smooth, relaxing shooter compared to the others on Neo. Since it's an MVS I could always stock everything and load what is exciting for the moment.

If you didn't want to buy an MVS for whatever reason, you could still get an AES.

Just pick up an AES and Phantom 1 Converter. Then have your AES modded with a Bios Chip, (One that can be re-flashed for updates. I believe that can be done?), stereo and S-Vid out. That is what I did before I got my MVS. That way I could pick up cheaper titles if I wanted.

The collection doesn't look as cool since the MVS carts came in ugly brown boxes. Which are usually never included with the game when you buy it from someone anyway.

It's just too damn expensive for me to have an AES collection. I do have a few AES games. I just cant see myself spending 1k on a game I could get for around 50 just to have some paper and plastic. I like my rare stuff as much as the next guy, but, true Neo fans are the hardcore of the hardcore. Also, I can switch my games between TV play and cabinet play. With Bios chip, one has access to all the dip switch setting and codes, etc.

You didin't buy one of these yet! What is your hold up?

Get cracking! Lots of great games and Ghost Pilots(if you like shooters) is one of them, I may add!

I have owned the AES system for well over 15 years and I can't put the joystick down!

I remember when I first bought it NEW from Electronics Boutique! I was 13 and they had to "special order" it for me. For those that know my area I bought it at the King of Prussia mall in PA.

It only cost $499.99 NEW and was the GOLD system. It came with two joysticks, memory card, and the game Fatal Fury! Games were the drawback for the average consumer as they cost $149.99+ The system did originally retail for $649.99, but EB dropped the price a few months later to $499.99.

Back then people thought you were crazy if you spent $499.99 for a video game system. Today, we just call those people PS3 owners! LOL

Anyway, buy one! It is well worth it. If you are looking for a NEW unit, I know of a place who can get you one (warehouse find-brand new old stock) for $1,000.00-MINT and NEW as can be! I just have to check if they are still available. I bought one to put away for myself, but that was about a year ago.

Well worth it!

I liked that game sorry to say...

I won't even bother to respond to your first comment...I was merely recalling memories of my youth...

Last Resort was a good shooter as well...hopefully you agree to that! I bought that the day it came out and played it till my fingers bleed!

Just get an AES with a Super MVS converter.

Trust me playing the ROMs which is basically anything but the original doesnt feel the same, let alone look the same on the PS2 and the Wii. The colors look all washed out on the next gens.

If you know how to mod stuff you can even build your own CMVS, depending on your needs you can build one for $100-250 in parts.

Andro Dunos and Last Resort are horizontal scrollers tho, not like Ghost Pilot which is vertical. So it depends on what you like. Maybe most people who like either horizontal or vertical shooters like both tho. I sure do :)

I like Ghost Pilot, think its a pretty cool game. Its not the most expencive game either. Maybe the price has gone up lately, but i payed $30.99 for a brand new AES copy of Ghost Pilots like 2 years ago on Ebay.

That is true that Andro Dunos and Last Resort are hori's. I feel that Alpha Mission II is a better alternative than Ghost Pilots for a vert.

I got me Ghost Pilots BRAND NEW MINT [sic] several years ago for $25 (+shipping).

The thing about Ghost Pilots is that it is have mega huge sprite in which the whole sprite is the hit box and then their are cheap enemies that is kill you with no warning :( Ghost Pilots is have alot of potential but come up short. For the time of 1991 it was decent I guess but today it is fall below average.

I've been thinking of picking up Aero Fighters 2 AES too, but its like $100 + shipping. Dunno if its worth it or if it will get cheaper. I see that Alpha Mission 2 isnt too expencive either. Well, I'd have Alpha Mission II and Ghost Pilots because I like them. And as I said before I don't see any reason why I wouldn't buy the others and at least keep them on a shelf to be rotated at times.

On a side note, I'm waiting until after midterms and if I can get enough money pulled together I'd like to purchase a 6-slot MVS with all the goodies (not consolized though) or put it down as a Christmas wish. I want to start my homemade cabs soon, it's becoming very confortable outside again, perfect for shop. :)
