View Full Version : Bizarre eBay/Paypal scenario?

Okay, so this morning I got a package returned to me (FF Tactics, not that it really matters). It says delivery attempted, no such number. Pretty weird given I used paypal to print the shipping label and it was a confirmed address. So I look on Paypal; the page with the payment to the USPS shows the address I used as confirmed near the top, then lists it again near the bottom, but then says unconfirmed. Weird, no? I go to the transaction page from the payment I received and it shows just as it always has, with a confirmed address (the one I shipped to in SC using paypal's shipping).
Anyway, so I email the guy at the paypal addy he has listed with what happened and he emails me a totally different address in NJ (nothing else). I write back that I can't ship there because it isn't the confirmed address I have, and he writes back that it IS his confirmed address. He's just written back that he was overseas and had things sent to his brother when he created the account, but now he's back. He says the SC address is nowhere to be found on his account, and the NJ is confirmed.
Anyone know what's going on? Advice? I've contacted paypal to see how an address can show confirmed and unconfirmed on the same page. Fortunately the other guy is communicating pretty well and doesn't seem up to no good, so hopefully we'll figure it out.

Does he have a solid feedback record? If so, I'd just ship to the unconfirmed address and get Delivery Confirmation. I doubt you'll have a problem.
If he doesn't have much feedback or has an unhealthy proportion of negative feedback, though, then you might want to be careful.

Yeah, if his feedback checks out and he seems legit, mail the game to the "unconfirmed" address. I'm sure some of the ultra paranoid people here will tell you to never, ever, ever ship to unconfirmed address, but if it sounds like an honest mistake or some kind of Paypal error, just ship.
I'm curious to see what Paypal says about this situation, because I've never seen that happen on a payment I've received. Let us know what they say.

Yeah, with good feedback I'd do it. Just "never, ever, ever" do this with someone with no feedback.

Well, I happen to be a pretty paranoid person. We prefer to be called risk-averse, though. That's a joke... you can laugh.
He has a feedback score of 10 at 91.% positive. That amounts to 1 negative (there were a bunch of buys from the same seller, if you are wondering about the math), but that was in '05, so even I can dismiss that given 6 positives in the last month, but 10 is still a bit lower than I'd like. In any case, we decided I'd refund his payment and he'd try again. I guess he could just walk out at this point, which wouldn't be so bad since it didn't go for what I'd hoped in the first place, but I think he'll come through. Still no word from paypal, which seems odd to me. Thumb up their butts I guess.

Did you try calling them? I've had better luck getting answers from them over the phone than through email.

Maybe someone was messing with his account?

Finally get a response from paypal, and this is it:
Thank you for contacting PayPal. We apologize for the delay in
responding to your service request.
Bradley, I am sorry for the inconvenience this has caused you. If your
package was sent to the address listed on the label, you and the buyer
will need to work out who will pay for shipping it again. As long as
the shipping address shows as confirmed it is ok.
Thank you for being a valuable member of the PayPal community.
Sincerely,
Lori
