Nintendo just let us know about the Wii Remote Jacket, a grippy silicon sleeve that wraps around your Wiimote, ensuring it remains firmly in your grasp instead of lodged in the skull of a nearby loved one. Now, before you accuse Nintendo of climbing aboard the Wii-peripheral junk bandwagon, we should let you know how serious they are about the Wii Remote Jacket: they're giving the things away for free!

Bundled with hardware like the Wii console, Wii remotes, and Wii Play (which of course comes bundled with a free Wiimote) shipping to retailers on October 2nd, the Wii Remote Jacket should be available with those products as early as October 15th. Already got a Wii with an armada of Wii Remote missiles that need cushioning? Go to nintendo.com (http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/jacket/jacketrequest.jsp), or call 1-866-431-8367 to place your order (note: you can order 'em now, but the free sleeves won't ship until the week of October 15). Just punch in your console's serial number (what, you don't know it by heart?) and order up to four sleeves for your Wiimote collection. Done.

Well for free, why not?

To Nintendo.com I go…

That's cool it is free. Looks kinda funny though. I wonder if it will fit around the Battery charger & cover I have on the wii-mote now.

Also, will that thing work with Rez?

I think it's thicker at the plus pad end to make it more comfortable when holding it horizontal for games like SPM and Metal Slug Anth. Don't know about the battery pack part... I'll have to wait to find out when I get mine.

I guess I'll have to grab my console's serial # when I get home tonight. Then, I'll be in for 3.

Hooray for the Nanny State!

I'm sure Nintendo's lawyers had nothing to do with this.

Likewise... and why not?! :)

Apparently the same offer is happening in Europe as well, just seen the promo do the rounds for it...

This is just retarded, not sure I want to bother wasting my time or nintendos.

Hmm...I just tried to order and it told me that my requested amount was higher than allowed for my Wii's serial #? Told me to try again in 24 hours. I initially tried for 4 and then when that failed, I tried for 2 since I do have 2 legit Wii-remote...but it still said it was too high. I then tried one and it still said it was too high?! WTF?

I guess I will try again tomorrow...but perhaps they had a limited amount of these they were willing to give away and that has been met?

I might call the number they list on the page with the error. I just got a message from Nintendo on my Wii today telling me about this...so...I should be able to get at least one if not the 2 I would need. I was only trying to get 4 because I know that I eventually will have 4 and it will be awhile before the current stock of Wii remotes without these runs out.

State?? Nintendo's just a private company, and there are no laws forcing you to use one.

The term "nanny state" in this case refers to the litigious American culture in general. I was pointing out that Nintendo's lawyers probably are trying to nip potential lawsuits in the bud by publicly offering these "safety devices" for free.

I was trying to inject a little humor in the thread, not blaspheme The Holy Nintendo Corporation.

It isn't letting me get one..It keep's saying i've ordered to many. I haven't order at all though, so we'll see tomorow.

And I thought the wrist straps were a little overboard.

How wiitarded do you have to be to need this level of protection?

When I read the topic I was thinking about an actual jacket that acted as a WiiMote. The Power Glove for the body. LOL

I was able to order 4 just now with my SN. Don't know what the problem is... perhaps a Java script blocker or something? :hmm:

I signed up to get mine not long ago. I'm getting them mainly for added comfert.

However, adding them as a "safty precaution" is stupid. Isn't thicker remote straps enough? Are they going to release a glove with a Wii-mote glued to it?

It worked fine for me in Firefox.

Thanks for the heads up though :)
