View Full Version : Extremely noobish question about Zelda for the NES

Hi there,

I have recently been playing Zelda I for the NES. I have noticed that when you die in a dungeon you respawn at the entrance to that dungeon, with all your health and any items you got in the dungeon.

Does doing this in any way alter the ending of the game, or are there any other consequences of constantly dying in a dungeon and re-entering it with full health. It seems a bit of a cheat to me. The manual isn't very specific.

Thanks for any replies
Sam

There is only one ending to The Legend of Zelda. Don't sweat it. Also, when you die, you start again with three hearts. I assume you haven't picked up any extra heart containers yet.

your only penalty is a +1 to your death counter on the file select screen, other then your friends laughing at you for dying it doesn't affect anything else.

It does actually affect the ending a little bit -- but only in that when you finish the second quest, it will display the number of times you died. (You can see the ending here (http://www.vgmuseum.com/end/nes/a/zelda.htm), unless you don't want to spoil it for yourself).

Not really a big deal for most people, but just thought I'd let you know.

Also, you may know this, but there's a way to save your progress without dying. Press START to pause on the first controller, and press UP+A simultaneously on the second controller. This way, you can save your progress in case you don't want to play the whole thing through at once or in case you're afraid you might die.

Thanks again for your help guys, this one will really help. The manual wasn't very specific on how to save.

Heh, some of you guys must have been playing this game for 20 years and I've only just started. :)

Wow, it would be fun to go back and have the experience of playing through this game for the first time again... have fun!

D'you think Zelda Classic is a reasonable substitute these days?

OK, five dungeons completed. So far it has been great, yesterday afternoon went by so fast I couldn't believe it. It has been a long time since a game has had that affect on me. I don't want it to end :)

There is only one ending for the original Zelda, so no matter what you do it wont change the outcome.

Yeah i heard that from a previous post. What I meant was that it's been a long time since I have gotten into a game so much that it will be sad when it ends.

However, I might tackle the second quest after finishing it the first time around.

I think Zelda is overrated, but it's not a bad game at all.

Back when I was a kid it was great! But back then I had the time to burn every damn bush on every screen. I didn't have Nintendo Power to cheat with, though. That's the only thing that bugs me about it now, so if I play it these days I cheat a bit.

I don't mind burning random bushes. Later in the game when you have the red candle. Unfortunately, amassing rupees that way isn't important anymore. I thought it was kind of cheap that you start with a blue candle which you can only use once per screen and never get a better candle until later in the game. I thought the brown boomerang was pretty useless, too, especially when you get a "better" one in the very next level.

BTW, anyone ever try getting the blue boomerang first then go back and get the brown one? I wonder if you get stuck with that first one if you actually pick them up in reverse order.

Zelda is a blast to play but the ending is horrible. All the fun is in playing the game, the ending leaves alot to be desired, so enjoy playing it because when its done you'll want to start from the beginning again.

yeah, just finished it yesterday. The ending is is kind of a bummer, but the game was great. The last dungeon was a prick.

Yeah i just wish it would let you explore the world more after you beat it. Once you beat it, it deletes your gamesave and you have to start at the beginning again :/
