Including the newly announced 40 gig model, how many different hardware models are there of the PS3 at this point? I'm talking about machine models, not bundled packages.
[UPDATE]
20 Gig (launch model, no wireless, no HDMI, discontinued) US
60 Gig (launch model, discontinued) US/JAP
60 Gig (Software PS2 Emulation, Launched 3/07) EUR
80 Gig (Motorstorm bundle, launched 8/07, software PS2 emulation) US
40 Gig (No PS2 compatability, 2 USB ports, no memory card reader) US/JAP/EUR
40 Gig (Same as above, but white) EUR
Let me know what's missing.

In America? 4 counting the 40gig
20Gig (launch model, immedately discontinued after launch)
60Gig (launch model, now discontinued, when you see no more in the stores, its gone)
80Gig (Motorstorm bundle, launced Aug 07, fully emulates PS2 software, no onboard Emotion Engine chip)
40Gig (No backwards compatability, 2 less USB ports, no MultiCard memory card reader)
the 40Gig has been officially announced for Europe (Oct 10), but an official US date is lacking

In America?
Are there others overseas? Ignoring the PAL/NTSC differences, of course. I thought there were 2 models released without the Emotion chip.

Only one model has made it out 'here' with out the EE chip as far as I know.
As far as I know the 'PAL' region has been the screwed over group. There was no 20Gig at all. Their 60's were w/o Emotion Engine Chips (but did do Backwards Compatability via Emulation). They've had at least 2 if not 3 different bundles (a Resistance + 1 extra controller and a FIFA bundle +1 for sure). They've also moved on to the 80Gig (with no EE chip) and new bundles for that, and since they are the only ones with the 'official' announcement for the 40Gig systems you can add that one to the list, giving them 3 different 'models' released thus far.
Japan's systems have pretty much mirrored our systems but they've gotten a few different bundles geared more towards the Japanese Gamer (Bladestorm (a Dynasty Warriors in Medival Europe), Hot Shots Golf 5 and Gundam).

Oh yeah, I got an original 60 gig a few months after launch. I was just mainly asking for historical/documentation purposes.

No more emulation. It's good to hear they've started removing the features people use.

is it really a feature that's used that much?
honestly everyone screaming bloody murder over BC are just people on internet forums. Joe average isn't going to kick and scream cause they can't play madden 04 on their ps3.
if you really want BC that badly...go track down a 60gb or gasp a ps2, cause I'm sure they don't cost an arm and a leg.

Well, normally this isn't a feature people use all that much. BUT, in this case there are VERY few games (2) worth playing on it so everyone is just using it as a PS2 right now mostly. This is my observation of my friends and my own usage when i had one. Once MGS4, Killzone 2 and LittleBigPlanet come out, I'll be getting one again and actually use it as a PS3 game player LOL.

Boy I miss the days when buying a console was easy. When you never had to worry about what size the memory was, if it included different hardware or software, what it is compatible with, if there was a better version coming out soon. This, plus the fact that most of these consoles have horrible track records as far as reliability, makes me not even want to bother with current gen stuff.[\rant]
Sorry, it just bugs me.

#6 doesn't count. I highly doubt that they'll EVER put HD DVD drives in 360s.

I hate to ask a tragically stupid question here, but I was hoping for a brief, but honest answer from those in the know...
Which of the following PS3 models would be the best to purchase, and why?
60 gig
80 gig
The reason I'm asking is because I haven't been following what's going on, but I've obviously seen that there are some changes between the two models.
Can someone take a sec to expand on what's different between the two, and what why those differences are valuable/invaluable?
I appreciate it.
Thanks,
Steve

Didn't the 60GB release model come with Talladaga Nights Blu-Ray DVD movie? Also, is it true that the 40GB Model will come with the Spider-Man 3 Blu-Ray DVD movie?

Simplest and most direct differences are in how they handle playing PS2 games.
60Gig's actually have an Emotion Engine (PS2 CPU)and a PS2 graphics chip in the system. The EE does all the work and because the EE is doing the work, there is a better level of compatability with PS2 games than the below mentioned system.
80Gig's run PS2 games via Emulation powered by the PS3 Cell chips along with using the PS2 graphics chip to display the games. To cut costs they took out the EE chip and with the removal of the chip there was a bit of Backwards compatability loss on top of what wasn't playable already (just like the PS2 wasn't able to play all the PSOne games, the 60Gig PS3 couldn't play all the PS2 games, but was handling most of them).
If I was to be buying one right now, i'd ask myself one question, how much BC do you need via your PS3? This is also assuming that the 60 and 80 Gig PS3's are at the same price (which they are right now in stores, assuming you can find a 60Gig).
If you've got a PS2 and don't plan on tossing it, then get the 80, because it comes with MotorStorm and a 20gig bigger HD. More bang for your buck. However if you plan on using your PS3 to play as much as you can of your PS2 library, then look at the 60, and a farther down the line HD swapout if you feel the need, or need the space. They just use the standard 2.5inch Laptop HD, so if you've got a bigger one floating around and feel like using it, there you go.

Why not? To stay ahead of the PS3 that would be the next move, not saying i care if they do or not.. plus that would boost sales for the hd-dvd movies..@_@ which i heard they need it, blu-ray is taking over..

Some sources have recently begun reporting that indeed there will be a 360 with HD-DVD in the core unit. Sometime between 08 and 09 IIRC.
EDIT: Sorry about jumping the rails there... please resume original topic.
