I have had my eye on Koei's Romance of the Three Kingdoms series for almost a decade now. I always thought that the series looked interesting but I was never really sure if I would like them. Hopefully you all can help me out.

I was wondering what part of the series was a good place to start
I am mainly looking at 2 and 3 for the Genesis, 4 for the SNES and then 7-11 for the PS2. I certainly won't rule out other versions however.

I think 3 is the best overall. It improved in nearly ever aspect over 2. The later ones started to be SO wide-spread and open (be a lord! Be a warrior! Be a scholar! Be a ruler! Be a farmer!) that the games lack focus.

Either way, the games have incredibly steep learning curves. Make your own ruler, advisor, and handful of characters and start out with one free city so you can work into them slowly.

You can also download several of them from Home of the Underdogs.

Cool! Thanks for the replys. Sounds like I'll have to hunt down part 3 and I'll check out what versions underdogs has to download.

I've heard from multiple sources that X is the best one yet, though the interface on the PS2 version is a bit clunky with a gamepad. I'm not sure how far advanced the english patch is for the PC version...it might just be a menu patch at this point.

Regardless, I have the PS2 version of X and am looking forward to finding a nice chunk of time to be able to sit down and work my way into it. :)

I also agree that 3 is the best. Especially the PC version (available at the Underdogs). The simplicity it has is the core of the series. The others (I only know 1-4) have murky controls, unnecessary added complexity and other detractors.
