Playstation 2, the Nintendo Gamecube, and the X-Box...how are these systems doing in sales? Is there the sort of enthusiasm we saw for the earlier (including the previous) generations? Since the Playstation 2 is supposed to be backward-compatible, is it doing well?

In other words, how well is the videogame market doing now, honestly?

Judging from the fact that all stores have tons of unsold units of all recent consoles, I can't see any of them ever being rare or all that collectible on the level of the older stuff that's hard to get even now.

PS2 is by FAR AND AWAY in leading in sales, Gamecube and xbox are fighting it out for second.

Financially, it's the same old story. The big guns are raking it in, and the small fish are getting pushed to the side, fighting for scraps. The industry in general is still very healthy, and growing despite projections. MS is losing money, Nintendo has still never posted an unprofitable quarter, and Sony is still king. A lot of the fat is being trimmed right now, however. Not a good time to start up in the industry, unless you've got the next tomb raider.

Even with these sales, there anything lacking of people buying more games then consoles or vice versa?

PS2 will sell more worldwide systems than even the PSone - I believe they've done something like 60 mil worldwide so far, and they're still at a 200 dollar price point. As it drops to 149 and 99, sales should continue strong.

Xbox and Gamecube - both aren't doing bad, but neither will do more than 20-30 mil worldwide system sales. Nintendo is in the most trouble, because the big guns (Metroid and Zelda) are out already - they don't have anything highly anticipated left.
