well the collector and Mr. "i like glossy white" in me says i LIIIKKEEE. but the practical and cynical me nods his head at Sony, for yet another SKU, and desperate attempt to sell these things.

Well you're gonna need a (preferably ceramic white) PS2 sat next to this bad boy if you want to be playing PS 1 or 2 games: no backwards compatibility.

white is great on certain systems and not on others. I like the PS2 black and I like the ps3 black.

What we really need are different colors all we ever get is black, white or silver.

The white version is not a new SKU if that is what you mean Its the same as the 40GB SKU (well.. that is new, but the white isnt a new SKU after the 40GB SKU). PS2 also had many colors, GBA and DS also has it. They werent desperate to sell their systems, but still new colors came ;)

I think the white is look good. I am sure it will look "cleaner" too and be less maintanence to upkeep.

I really hate the black PlayStation 3 as it is dust magnet. The one thing with black, it is difficult to keep clean and shiny. It is like why I do not like to own a black car -- black car = no life.

Amen to that. I spend $10 on a car wash that lasts me 4 days.
That white PS3 probably is pretty easy to keep clean. It'll be difficult compared to a flat grey system but it'll be a lot easier than the glossy black. My laptop is glossy white & I have to wipe it down every couple days that's just because I get my hands all over it.

I should have bought one of those in Singapore a few years ago when they were new and inexpensive (came out in '05, me thinks). Didn't realize they had gotten so valuable! <<<buys ticket for shopping expedition to Singapore this weekend>>>

Edit: Didn't realize they were bundled with an LCD only. I thought I remembered seeing them sold separately at Challenger, but I suppose not.

PS2 had different colors years ago. Here is an article from 2001:

These were released in the early life of PS2 to celebrate its success. From 2001 and to the next years PS2's success wasnt dropping so this was not the reason why they released colored PS2 consoles. Of course, releasing more color variants is an attempt to sell more and make more money, but in this case it was not becuase the sales were dropping.

Another example is the DS Lite. Japan recently got 2 new colors (metallic pink and metallic black or siliver if i remember right) and DS is still selling very strong. So new color releases does not automaticly indicate that a system is selling poor or that sales are going down. Its just to make more money :)

Well.. it depends on what you define "SKU". For me a SKU is when a console is different from another model in terms of functions and/or design. So if you buy a white or black PS3 40GB model you get the exact same functions and looks (except for the color of course) :)

Not sure how many SKUs PS3 has now, but if you count the 60GB model with and without the EE chip i guess its somewere around 6-8. Only 2-3 has been for sale (easily avalible atleast) at the same time tho.

I agree that there isnt that many interesting games for PS3 out right now, atleast not for me, but that joke is starting to get alittle old now. I did a fast count and found out that about 33 games (including PSN games) has been released for PS3 in North-America alone. There are some releases thats only out in Japan also, so lets say that atleast 40 games are out. Its been about 47 weeks since PS3 launched. That would be about 1 game released every week in average.

So nothing to play? As said, i agree that there isnt many interesting games out right now, but there are some (Super Stardust HD and Warhawk for example). It variates from person to person what they think is fun or not tho so i wont argue anything on that.

Did we ever get this? I remember reading earlier this year that it was headed our way...but I don't remember seeing it anywhere.
