Which PS2 FPS is better?

Easy. Deus Ex is more than a simple FPS, it is one of the best videogames ever. So much atmosphere, so much great gameplay and a clever story.

Ooooo, this is a tough one. These are 2 of the best games ever. I'd have to say Deus Ex is better overall but HL is very close.

They're both good and they're both cheap, but I think Deus Ex squeaks by as my favorite in the end.

Half Life gets my vote, but I would much rather play them on a PC then on the PS2.

If were talking PS2, I'm gonna hafta vote for Deus Ex.

Otherwise, my vote would go with Half-Life.

But Half-Life was pretty crappy on pretty much every console it came out for. It's one of those games that are meant to be played on a PC.

I would say neither unfortunately. The PS2 just wasn't quite powerful enough to pull off either game well compared to the PC. You can get both games for like $10 apiece new, so don't feel limited, but I am sorry to say that you will probably be very disappointed.

Thank you. ;)

First reading the title I expected a PC conversation. I've never played the PS2 versions as it's not the way to go on these. A few of my friends spent many of hours playing Half-Life and many mods to it, whenever they look at the PS2 version and laughed. As for Deus Ex, it's an awesome game and in my opinion it's a hair above HL. I've heard awful things about the second DE game so the best way to express it is:
DE > HL
DE2 < HL2

Well the PC version of Half Life can run in a higher resolution, but the PS2 port of Half Life has the higher quality models (higher quality than the HD models included with Blue Shift). Also, it's the only way to play Decay (I don't believe anyone has ported it back over to the PC version as a mod yet, anyway).

With Deus Ex, the PC version has much, much shorter (and more infrequent) load times, runs smoother and in a higher resolution, but the PS2 version has an overhauled and improved interface in addition to prerendered opening and ending segments, improved character models, and an overhauled animation system. Hell, you can even use a mouse and keyboard with the PS2 version, though you can't rebind the keys (woo for hidden features!).

Also, I've always been hesitant to call Deus Ex a First Person Shooter on the grounds that it's simply so much more than simply an FPS. It so perfectly blends FPS and RPG together, better than even System Shock 2 did.

The choice between the two depends on what you're more interested in. Want a first person shooter with some awesome fast paced action? Take Half Life. Want a first person RPG with tons of character building options and multiple optional paths throughout the levels? Take Deus Ex. Either way, the console versions trade resolution for polygon count and suffer from increased load times and frequencies.

Any version you pick of either game is a winner in my book, though. They're all fun to play through and both games are among my all time favorites.

Based on the PS2 versions (I've never played the PC version of either game), Deus Ex by a MILE.

Half-Life is one of the most overrated games ever, whereas Deus Ex is still brilliant.

Not even a contest in my mind.

I'm just going to say this, I'm not in the mood for typing a lot right now.

Half-Life is definitely not overrated.

Same here. There really is no incentive to play either game on the PS2, as both games are far inferior to their PC counterparts.

That being said, Deus Ex on the PC is easily the best game I've ever played, hands down (and this is coming from a die-hard console gamer). Half Life is also great, but just can't compare to the brilliance that is Deus Ex.

Deus Ex 2 wasn't a bad game either, but being the sequel to one of the best games ever placed a huge burden on its shoulders it just wasn't able to lift. I think many people payed through Deus Ex 2 hoping to find (parts of) the first one in it, and were naturally disappointed it didn't measure up to the original.

If you end up playing Deus Ex and like it (and chances are you will), make sure to also check out System Shock 2. You can download the fan-made mods for high-resolution textures and models to make the graphics a little more...presentable, but even without them it's still an absolutely awesome game and definitely worth playing. As a sidenote, System Shock 2 is also the spiritual predecessor to Bioshock, if that means anything to you :)

I guess I'm the only person who hated Deus Ex. Half Life was much more fun to play.

I'm sorry, but improved character models mean nothing when a game plays extremely choppy on the PS2. I don't know what it is about the PS2 from a technical standpoint, but FPS games just don't play well on it when compared to the same game on a mid-range PC. Trust me, I bought both for the PS2 just after they came out and almost immediately gave up on trying to play them. It seemed like there was always a delay between my moving the controller and the on-screen action catching up. I'm assuming that's what you are referring to as "not as smooth", but to me that's another way of saying not playable.

No, by "smoother" I was talking about the framerate. It's not as bad as the Xbox port of Half Life 2, but it can be pretty questionable at times.

I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that I was talking about input lag, of which there really isn't any; there's just a small deadzone in the center of the analog stick. If you want to play a PS2 FPS with input lag, go play Cold Winter. See how far you can make it into the game before wanting to hurl it out the window in disgust.

Regardless, the PS2 port of Half Life is worth a play for fans of the game just to see the extended/expanded portions of the levels and overhauled models. Unless you have Half Life Source...but if you had Half Life or Half Life Source, you wouldn't be trying to figure out which one to buy for your PS2 unless you really liked the games, in which case you wouldn't be asking which to pick up, you'd just pick them up.

Oh, and a buddy linked me to this port of Decay to PC (http://decay.half-lifecreations.com/) that's apparently really close to release :D

Well, the PS2-port has some slight framerate issues sometimes, but not often. Overall it is definately superior to the PC-version; the character-models are MUCH better than on PC. The co-op-mode is great fun with an exclusive side-story, but can only played in splitscreen.
For Deus Ex we have a draw; draphics and sound are better on PS2, but the reduced number of different body-parts to aim at and the frequent loading times are a step back.
You can play both with mouse and keyboard on PS2 afaik, so that is not an issue.
