Got tired of this not being emulated in MAME, so I bought one.

I don't think I've ever seen this game before. How is it? What other game is it similar to (gameplay)?

It's kind of unique. Basically you drive laps around one of five tracks (you choose) and you race against a clock timer, like Pole Position. On the track there are also flags of 5 different colors that you have to collect in order, kind of like Up N' Down. The order is randomized each time so each game is different. There are also gates you can drive through for points or additional time. In the roadway are a series of obstacles like rocks and fences. There are also logs, which will make you jump, and small rocks, which will put your buggy up on two wheels.
Here are some screen shots I found: http://www.vidsonix.com/monaco/speed_buggy.htm

Sounds like an interesting title, too bad I don't ever recall seeing it in my area when I was younger. Or, maybe it was around, and I never played it.

And don't forget the soccer ball!
The 3D-ness of this game was awesome for its day. I don't think I've seen the upright version, our local arcade had the cockpit one.

One monitor, or three? I remember both versions.

Nice score Flack!
For those that want to try it out, there were decent versions of it for Commodore 64 and Amiga, but they might be under its other name Buggy Boy...

Nice one, Rob! I'd love to play that the next time I visit!
I'm interested to know--now that you have this, is it possible to dump it for the MAME team? How does that even work, anyway?

Three. My brother and I used to fight each other to get at that thing first. This was one of the rare instances where my brother was better at a game than me.

Apparently the way it works is, you take the board out of the cabinet and mail it to someone who can dump it. The one site I checked said the guy was backed up a couple of months. I'd be much more willing to help out if there were a known dumper within driving distance, so I could pull the PCB, drive somewhere, let them dump it and then take it back home.
