I've been thinking of playing this more. Should I really give it a chance and any advice, maps, etc for this?

I think you should. It's lots of fun.

Just try to avoid getting killed.

As for maps and such --- there might be some on GameFAQs... I personally have no maps or passwords available.

Enjoy.

P.S. Who else thinks this game is WAY overdue for a Virtual Console release?

I'm in complete agreement with that. Always used to play it at my cousin's house when I would go over.

I LOVED this game when I was younger... rented it so many times that the local store guy sold it to me, no joke!

It's tons of fun but lots to remember... maps and secrets that is.

Started playing it this evening (save states pwn passwords). Having fun so far exploring. In Area 1 now, ready to hit Corridor 11. Though the way the maps are set up our a little confusing.

This is one of my favorite NES games ever. It just might be the one I like the best.

In actuality, as long as you understand what you're doing, you'll find you really won't need maps or outside help. It's fairly straightforward as long as you're thorough. If you're playing the full mode (not the bonus "TGL" mode), you'll be way overpowered for most bosses after a couple areas. The opposite is true if you're running through the bonus mode. I've actually never beaten the "pure shooter" mode. It's bloody impossible. No matter how hard I try I can never earn enough weapons to make myself formidable against some of the bosses in the plant levels.

Has anybody else beaten that mode?

Blitzwing256

I beat it once, the trick is to shoot EVERYTHING and save up the enemy erasers for the tougher late bosses, if you fire off about 5 or so enemy erasers quickly in succession almost every enemy on the screen will turn into a powerup (includes enemy shots) this can save you in many a tough boss fight. the higher your score is the better items you get at the end of each level.

Now up to Corridor 12, have all upgrades and weapons so far.

The only action RPG Shooter I can think of, and certainly the only one that matters. Awesome game, no maps needed.

Great Game! Like Zelda Meets Star Soldier. I love the Music too. Mike : )

I could never replace the good times I had with that game! The passwords are the downfall though and the only bad part of an amazing game!

I remember playing the Japanese version of this game, only to find out half way through that there was a US release. Still a great game for not knowing what the hell was going on, I'm really surprised that there wasn't a sequel.

Sigma Star Saga tried to go down the same route but it came off worse for wear.

The Guardian Legend is probably my favorite NES game if you were to pin me down and give you an answer. The atmosphere of the game is also something that has survived the test of time. Sort of a Metroid like feeling of isolation and enclosement.

Everyone enthusiastic about the NES needs to be playing this game. I think it was Compile's best all around effort.

Ya know I am really enjoying this title. The action and the rpg elements miz pretty damn well, and the graphics are good. I'm digging the music as well, my fav is the Aqua Area Corridor music actually.

TGL actually is a sequel itself. As you know, the Famicom version is called "Guardic Gaiden". Guardic is a compile shooter for the MSX. I haven't played it myself but I imagine it's kind of primitive Zanac or Blazing Lasers.

Gaurdic is....very differnt, its a shooter but has a zeldaish scrolling system, its hard to describe but it was HARD.

another action rpg shooter was also for the famicom I beleive the rough translation for it was "fuzzical fighter" pretty good but too short.

Blue Lander once explained to me the Guardic series in a thread here somewhere. For some reason I always thought Zanac was the prequel to Guardian Legend, due to hints in both games.

Same programmers for both series but they don't have anything in common storywise.

zanac/gunac/zanacX are thier own seperate series.

Well I just ordered this off of e-bay for a whopping $3.04, with free shipping. So now I can finally play this game in English and right on my NES.

Goodtimes.

Any advice on which special item to use on the boss??

Try using the weapon that looks like a fireball. It's slow but powerful. Also avoid getting hit from the bosses's bigger laser since it does that most damage. Fly close to the center and stay away from the sides.

I love topics like this. I have had this game in my collection for some time, but never plugged it in. I will make some time to play this game because of all the kind words everyone has said about this title. I have 650-700 NES games, but because I love about 15 of them so much, I rarely plug in a different title. I have to change that, starting tonight. :)

Sadly, there are a lot of underrated NES games out there like this but a lot of gamers missed it because of lack of hype. There are no plans to release this great game on the Wii either.

I loved this game back in the day. I haven't played it in forever, so I can't really give specific advice. I do remember that I beat it without using any external maps, so I don't think those are necessary.

I don't know where I got it back in the day, but it's in my top-10 games of all time. Probably #2 NES game for me behind SMB3. The atmosphere was great...the music really helped. Back in the day I DID beat the just flying mode...I am an obsessed finisher of games.

As a kid I loved mapping games and this game is MADE for a piece of graph paper. In fact, when I re-played it about 3 years ago I mapped it again and it was still fun. I still have that map somewhere....hiding in the crawlspace.

TGL was also my one and only time writing to a game mag. I wrote to Nintendo Power with a cheat I FOUND (yes, I found it...not saying I was the first, but I didn't hear of it from someone else) - the one where you can get infinite blue (?) chips (coins) in one of those fields of chips. The cheat didn't get published (I think it was out-of-date) but my envelope art did get published! I still kick myself for throwing out all my old NP and EGM's.

Well I received the game yesterday and played it for a bit today, it's a real shame that this game got overlooked. I'm to finally be able to play the game and understand what's going on, instead of just guessing on what to do.

The password to just play the flying levels is "TGL," the initials of the game. I've never seen the code Blitzwing posted before.

Yes, that's the one....I guess "infinite" isn't the right term - you can max out your blue chip limit, but you can do it as many times as you want.

There is a great site here with lots of info on the game:

http://shmups.classicgaming.gamespy.com/guardianlegend/

The page hasn't been updated in 5 years, but I guess the game hasn't changed much in the last 4 years either! :-)

i bought this game a few years back and never had the time to fire it up properly... since i've had today off i decided to give it a shot

extremely fun game in my opinion, i played through multiple areas/corridors.. and i'd just beaten area 5 (and died not even once) when my nes crashed on me... im gonna give it another shot though

i tried out that all J's password too =]

Pretty cool, eh? I wonder if you spent enough time with that if you could actually finish the game using that code. It's really odd that it doesn't start you in a Lander room, also.

Blitzwing256
10-30-2007, 02:30 AM
its impossible to win with that code unfortuatnly, you don't have the key to exit the fire area so you are more or less stuck, and the password system is a bit odd it has cordinates for what screen to start on, in fact someone cracked the password system so you could create your own password and pretty much start anywhere.

amusingly enough when i was young I would put in random passwords with the help of turbo and the advantage to get all sorts of bizzare codes, many of which would start you outside of the map (almost always being stuck)
