View Full Version : Unusual Atari 2600 Centipede

I picked up a Centipede for Atari 2600 today out of a box of Atari games and it is quite unusual, at least to me.
The end label is unlike any Centipede ones that I have seen. The front label is the regular silver label but there is another label underneath it. Without peeling it off I can just see a hint of the bottom and right side edges and looks like the Centipede label from the Coleco version. This is not in a Colecovision case though which makes me wonder how this could happen?
I can hopefully post some pics tomorrow is anyone is interested. I suppose I could peel off the top label to find out for sure but I am interested to see what other people think before I do. Thanks.

In Canada, many Colecovision games came with an additional (and identical except for the language)) French translated label/sticker. Could have something to do with that.

I don't know about NTSC but in PAL territory this label variation is not hard to get. You don't see one that often but if you look for it (which takes some effort as the game itself is quite common) you'll be able to find one.
Thats wierd, i've never run across run myself, but it would be neet to see.

I've seen a couple Centipedes with a completely different end label...orange lettering and a font unlike any other VCS game.
Was the OP going to post a pic? I'd kinda like to see what it looks like.

I have taken the photos (sorry for the delay) but they are too large to upload so I don't know what to do with them. Any ideas?

That sounds like what I have here as far as the end label goes. Did those versions you saw have two front labels though?

put it up on photobucket or the like, they downscale pics from their ginormous size.
If not just PM me and i'll give you my email so you can send it to me and i'll upload it.

I'm guessing that it is the coleco version but another company bought the cartridge and slapped their stickers on top of the coleco stickers.

That's wierd! I just picked one up the other day two! Exactly as described! I tried the game and it's Centipede, but there is a different end label as well as an definate orange sticker under the Atari Centipede sticker! Anyone know what this could be?

That matches the end label I've seen. I didn't notice the orange paper underneath the front label.

Mine is a little more distinct on the orange label. You can see the orange label about 1 millimeters worth down the left side as if the labeling machine was off just a hair. I didn't have to peel anything back to see mine...

I've seen that font on an Atari cart somewhere before, may be able to figure it out by next week when I see a certain collection.

My money is on it being an Atarisoft label.

That makes sense. They labelled them incorrectly as the Colecovision version, then slapped the Atari label on top of the front label but just left the end label as it was.

Good call! Thanks for everyone's input on this. I have seen many Atari games but just hadn't seen this one before.

It's still very odd though...
The ColecoVison end label and face label underneath are not the standard ones that appeared on any copies that were released...those all had 1983 Atari Inc. face labels and an orange end label with white text. These have a 1985 Atari Corp. face label and black end label with orange text. I have never seen a copy of Centipede for ColecoVision with those Atari Corp. labels.
Atari Corp. didn't even release any 2600 games in 1985 and they didn't reissue the ColecoVision Atarisoft titles at all. Perhaps this was part of an aborted effort to reissue them? If so, the labels were put on the wrong cartridge shells to begin with...ColecoVision games used different (bevelled) shells than the Atari 2600. So there was either some very weird experimentation going on or they just totally messed up.

I could always do an experiment and peel the top label off. It may end up destroying the label underneath though. I am not too partial to this game since apparently others have found this same variant. What do you guys think?

No...definitely not. Why? We already know what's under there.
