If this thread is not allowed I apologize. I was curious what you guys think are the best emulators for the NES and the SNES. I'm about to download a good SNES emulator for the PC rather than hooking mine up to the TV.

For Snes I use Zsnes. You can load games thruogh command line options. Works great with any frontend. For Nes it depends on your system. If you have something below 800 mhz FceUltra is great. For higher end systems. VirtuaNES an NEStopia are good.

ZSNES = da bomb.

Get a USB SNES adaptor and you're good to go.

Ain't nuthin' like the SNES pad :snuggle:

I use an older version of FCEultra for my NES emulation needs and it runs everything fine. For SNES, ZSNES is the way to go.

Zsnes, for the win. I was also a big fan (back in '99) of NESticle...is that even around anymore?

I have a Mac, and I use Nestopia for NES. It doesn't do full screen, because I have to use an older version of it. I'm not sure if later versions have added this. For my SNES emulator, I use SNES9X for my Mac and my XBOX. It's an awesome emulator, that I wish I could get working on my xbox correctly.

The latest NEStopia supports full screen as well as proper aspect ratios (no more square screen, games have the same dimensions as they would on a TV). You can also use different palettes with NEStopia, there are a few good accurate ones out there if you look around.

I use both SNES9X and ZSNES, although I've always preferred snes9x. For NES, I now use Nestopia but used Nesticle for years.

I get a lot of mileage out of PocketSNES and GPFCE... but both of those run on the GP2X. When it comes to computers, I go with SNES9X and FCEUltra (In fact, PocketSNES and GPFCE are ports of those!)

I've heard good things about Nestopia, but I've never tried it myself.

NESticle is still around as far as I know, but I don't think it's been updated since '01 or '02.

The last official update was in 1998, I believe he stopped updating saying that there were many great (and better) NES emulators available, that it was pretty much pointless to go on further with the software. Don't quote me on that tho.

That would make sense. I remember searching for NESticle last year when I upgraded my computer, and while the site I visited (I wish I could remember which one it was) cited the last update as being either in '01 or '02, it could have been a "fan hack." The emulator itself didn't seem to have any surface changes, so perhaps it was either erroneous information or a change in the editing features.

I prefer SNES9X over ZSNES mostly just because I like having the standard Windows UI instead of its own DOS-like UI. It also seems to have more video setting options, which is good because it takes a lot of tweaking to get the picture just right in an emulator.

I used to use FCEU, specifically the FCEU-mm releases, but I recently started getting this weird skip in the audio and gameplay every couple seconds and since I couldn't seem to track down the exact source of the problem (turning off hardware acceleration would solve it, so I assume it had to do with my video card settings, but without hardware acceleration I couldn't get proper vertical syncing) I decided to just switch to using another emulator. I tested everything out and NEStopia definitely seems like the best. Its UI incredibly customizable, which I like a lot, and it seems to have mapper support just about as good as the FCEU-mm releases, which is nice since I love playing obscure Hong Kong pirates and stuff.

I use Gens+ for Master System and Genesis emulation, as well, by the way. It's a nice emu, but I don't like the fact that you have to first exit fullscreen mode before you can exit the emulator or select another ROM, it makes setting things up so that I don't have to use the keyboard really complicated. Kega Fusion seems to have the same setup, though, unfortunately.

Stella for 2600 emulation and Magic Engine for TurboGrafx.

There's hardly any point in using anything other than ZSNES or SNES9x.

I've heard that SNESGT is shaping up nicely and already has superior compatibility for some of the more exotic stuff, though.

We're not in the year 2000 anymore, so while ZSNES and SNES9x were fine for their time, there's just no excuse for not using bsnes today. OK, there is an excuse - the high system requirements, but that's the cost of doing emulation right.

OK you guys got me believing in bsnes now I tested it with Gradius 3, and unlike other SNES emulators, the lasers actually sound like they would on a real copy of Gradius 3, no more tinny sound that the other emulators put out.

Me likes.

I use a modified version of FCE-ULTRA for NES who can be founded here (http://cah4e3.shedevr.org.ru/dumping_other.html)
Mostly for the support for pirate games who are being dumped actually. That's all. For SNES I used Snes9x and Zsnes, depends of the game, but mostly Zsnes.

Nearly all of those work with NEStopia. However very few work with NESterDC on the Dreamcast, which is a disappointment (but expected).
