Picked this up today, yes it's more of the same, but that's not entirely a bad thing. I miss some of We <3 Katamari's more imaginative levels like the snowman and racing levels, but at least cowbear is nowhere to be seen. There is one unusual stage, where you have to collect hot things to get your Katamari to a certain temperature, while rolling cold things hurts you. That was a little annoying.

Online play is suprisingly fun, the host picks a level and you are given a specific object to collect. The winner earns cookies (and thus, the achievements for collecting 100 and 1,000 cookies)

If you haven't picked up Katamari in a while, this is worth it. There is some irritating slowdown at parts (including online play) and I nearly completed it in 2 sittings which I suppose is normal for a Katamari game. But other than that, I felt it was worth 40 bucks. I await the downloadable levels.

Gamertag is Mexistrat 3000, come earn some cookies.

Play Asia has the Asian version for sale -- not region free, but if your 360 is Korean it's perfect for you. Those Asian versions are rarely region-free, but they're always a pretty good value.

Aaaaand I beat the game. Now I'm REALLY awaiting the downloadable content. Gamerscore whores, beating the game should earn you about 250 points. I got 10+ cousins and 10+ presents without really looking. And the size achievements are usually the same as certain level requirements.

Now that our power seems to have stopped turning off randomly we shall go out and find this Katamari and pwn it. Our scores shall be so insane that only Karl can hope to keep up. So let it be written.... so let it be told.

"Only"? I find it funny how Katamari games have progressively been getting more expensive. The first was still, by far, the best value because not only was it budget-priced at 20 bucks, but it was also completely fresh and original at that point. Then We <3 Katamari went up to $30, and now Beautiful Katamari at $40. I guess Namco is trying to slowly, subtly bring the series up to standard game prices. I guess compared to next-gen prices these days, though, it still seems like a great deal.

I'll look for you Kroogah this weekend when I'm off the road and can get back to my 360.

It's painful being away this week. Everyday Shooter, E4, Tony Hawk (I can't help it; love that series) and Katamari all waiting to be played. And I've barely had a chance to play Halo 3 co-op...

To be fair Everyone Loves Katamari on the PSP was $39.99 MSRP too.

As a fan of the series, I must say that I'm quite disappointed with this one.

It *almost* feels like I'm playing the PS2 version of the game. And while that may not sound like such a bad thing to many, if you were like me hoping for a NEXT GEN version of the game... anything - better graphics, better camera, even just a bigger game - you've been played the fool. This is clearly a "cash in" product. It's not right.

I finished the game in six hours. I played a bit online, that may help give the game some replayability. Ultimately, the PS2 games are better games overall and other than the "collect only hot things" level, far more challenging than the 360 as well.

Oh well... maybe they'll redeem themselves with the promised downloadable content.

Bump with a few things I've found out.

One of the secret achievements is for completing all the levels, plus all the time attack levels. That's an easy 100 points.

You can also unlock Eternal mode on every level by getting a perfect 100. So far I've done this on Saturn (2000 rings), Schloss Kosmos (rolled up the black hole, yes that is possible) the Casino (stay in the house and roll up almost everything, you should get it) and the Plant stage (I dunno, I was rolling up big trees by the end)

We've been hitting the game pretty hard. We've gone through the game a few times now *snicker* and are working our way towards the big achievements cousins (9 to go), presents (10 or 11) 100% items (97%). We've got a bunch of 400 or better World rankings in individual Katamari rollups. Not to mentio that were down to 358 in Total worldwide rollup for the 'Everyone Katamari' world.

Don't feel too bad, this is whats seeming to happen to alot of people off the bat. We had a few issues with some of the later levels and getting a decent size. Now the size isn't a problem, its just pushing the 100 score on those last few levels that we're still working through.

Remember that its not just about hitting the size required right when time runs out, your objective is to get the thing as big as possible by the time the level stops (except for Mars, thats totally time, just go fast). Thats what will get you the maximum points.

Cowbear level was honestly one of the levels I really did enjoy. It drove me mad, but I loved playing it over and over and over again until I was able to get it! Some of these levels in the new one just make me mad. The hot things level frustrates me to no end - there's just been too many times when I've rolled over something that I couldn't see and it dropped my temp down to almost nothing. :( "what was that, what did I roll over, what the hell!!!??!!"

I am pretty bugged by how hard it is to actually roll up and over stuff in this one as well. In the previous versions, with time and perseverance, you would be able to roll up over a steep cliff/wall/etc, but this one, I just keep ramming into the wall/train/cliff/etc.

Stu and I are playing this one to death, but there is just something missing from this iteration that keeps it from being up there with the rest.

Kroogah

Agreed on the temperature level and how annoying rolling up ledges is. This game lacks the freshness of the first game and the variety of the 2nd, but it's great for me since I don't have a PS2 anymore.

All the secret achievements have been found, and they are:

Complete all requests and time attacks (100)
Collection 100% (80)
Complete requests 100 times (40)
Complete requests 200 times (80)
Play for 50 hours (40)
Play for 100 hours (80)

Man, that's just lazy.

Yeah well in the regular game you don't have access to a few cousins and presents, those show in the new levels that we (here in america) should be getting in a few weeks. Otherwise theres 5 online achievements 3 of which can be had in 30 minutes or less depending on the levels played.

Back to the secret achievements, we're down to 50/100 hours, 200 rollups (probably in the 125 range now) and 100%, that we're sitting at 98% and 3365 items. With the online as bad as it is, I wouldn't want to play it online 50 hours to save my life. The cookie rewards are too random to be remotely fair. I think we only need one more 100 score for a level. That one will fall tomorrow.

In regards to a Wii or other system Katamari, as of right now none are officially announced. About a month ago NamcoBandai screwed up and listed Beautiful Katamari was going to be PS3/Wii bound, but they quickly revised that notion and those pending releases were taken off the site. Since BK did ship with a 'Only on XBox 360' label I'm guessing that they'll release a slightly different game sometime after the general 6 month exclusive window. However the DS game that was planned is still dead in the water (GameFAQs still lists a Japanese one is pending, but that the US one is dead).

Alright, I played through most of the game this weekend. My thoughts:

As much as I wanted to like this game, it's clear that it was a rush job. There are serious camera and detection problems on most of the levels. I even got completely stuck on one level, something that's never happened to me before. Load times are worse than on the PS2 games. What's up with that? This is a next gen console for crying out loud! Frame skipping is abundant-another inexcusable offense for a game that's this light on graphics. The only way this could have happened was the developers rushing the game through. Very disappointing. The music is also the worst of the three games, but that's a minor complaint compared to the aforementioned offenses.

A few positives, though: The game does look slightly better graphically. The difficulty has been ramped up, which is a welcome addition. Also, the addition of online play should give the game more staying power-though to be honest, I've logged more time in the previous games than any other next gen titles--I wish they would have fixed the bugs in the time they took to add online play.

I rate Beautiful Katamari 4/10

New Download content is up!

The 4 new levels @ 200 MS points a pop.

2 Cousins packs at @ 200 MS points a pop, this 'should' give you all the cousins save the 4 or 5 that are in the new downloaded levels.

2 Present packs at @ 200 MS points a pop., these 'should' give you all the presents save the handfull that are in the new downloaded levels.

The last 4 downloads really irk me. I've sunk in lots of time getting all the presents and cousins (I think I'm missing one of each for the main game) and they go and let you buy them like this was some bad EA/Ubisoft game that had the content in there, that they decided they would sell to you for a few bucks a pop. Yes buying those achievement packs should give you the cousins achievement, but its not a noble way to earn it in my humble opinion.

In other Katamari news, the new items that you would roll up in these DLC levels do not count towards the 100% item completion achievement. Once you get the content and start rolling up these new items it has a seperate % completion (just to the right of your other item completion %) when you look in your collection screen.

The New levels are

Space Station: Roll up as many items as you can without rolling over your 300k yen value (all items cost something, be cheap roll up as much as possible). This takes place in a new level which is a hybrid foodcourt/grocery store/electronics store. To get the 100 points you've got to hit in the range of 1000 items rolled up (i've hit 980+ and not gotten the 100 points for the level). Level has no time limit.

Yarn level: I don't remember the actual name, but your goal is to roll up yarn... lots and lots of yarn. Its a very easy level, push 1.5 meters and the 100 points is yours. Time limit is somewhere in the 4 minute range. Level is inside the ritzy mansion.

Milky Way Galaxy: Roll up constellations. There are 88 and they get counted as you roll up the every day items that are represented as constellations, little bear = Ursa Minor ect. I'm hitting somewhere in the 73/88 range and thats putting me at 88/100 points for the level. This one is played outside the mansion and opens up into the town square in front of it. Level time is 5 or 6 minutes.

Another one i'm not remembering the name: This one also takes place in the food court/grocery store and your goal is to roll up as much food as possible to get as many calories as possible. The Electronics portion has been replaced with more food. Remember sweets are bad for you, but have oh so many calories in them. The level isn't too hard and has a 4 minute cap on it. You'll hit your 100 points somewhere in the 850k+ range for calories.

Katamari news and things of note for those going after the harder achievements and the like...

S1lence and I recently (last weekend) spent something close to 3 hours playing online to get the 1000 cookies and 50 plays achievement. Do the 1 minute level, and tie with how many items you have <even 0 cookies works>, let the level end, this gives you 20 cookies apiece AND if you turn on random cookie reward one of you will get 60 for being better. Its random who gets it, tended to go 3 for one, then 3 for another with us... doing that made cookies go pretty fast.

I don't know if it was a glitch or just a flaw (my guess is a flaw) but I initally had more online plays (I had 11 he had 6) than him, but he got his 50 games achievement first. I had hosted all matched and once he got his, we backed out and he hosted a match, once match was over, I got my achievement. Take that as you will for that achievement.

the 1.5mill Achievement can ONLY be done on the Black Hole level. ROLLING IN THE URANUS LEVEL WILL NOT GIVE YOU THE ACHIEVEMENT. If you try with having rolled each new planet once won't be enough. You will need mutiple of all planets to think about hitting it. If your not at 1.418 by the time theres nothing left out there except the black hole you will not get it. The first time I did the level and rolled bigger that 1.5 (netting me the achievement) I got the 120 points for the level (1.507 was my final rollup), but i've hit higher since then, and it didn't give me 120 points for doing so. Last night I somehow plugged the blackhole (without rolling it up, which I though was impossible being that big) and it gave me 120 points again. I don't know how it happened, but again, take it as a possible glitch. When I was awarded the 120 points, he didn't talk with the fanfare that he did the first time I got 120 points, so it was probably a glitch.

All Presents/Cousins achievements are still UNOBTAINABLE. There are either hidden cousins that are truly hiding in the levels, that are not even showing in the upper left corner when you select the level but havn't started it (which I don't think is the case) or there is more content coming. Having all the cousins/presents for DLC and in the currently available levels (be it bought from the content updates or rolled up) still shows missing cousins on Cousin planet. It's pretty depressing actually that this is almost the first game i've got all the achievements and they are doing things with the content (most likely to get more money out of the game with content on there thats just locked) to prevent me from enjoying all aspects of the game.

Playing towards 100/200 rollup achievements (secret ones) requires normal mode only rollups, no eternals or timed rolls. In the time it took me to get the 200 rollup achievement, I got the 50 hour playtime achievement just before it by 2 or 3 rollups (but I played a lot of the Black Hole level). You can also plug in your controller and leave your 360 on with either the prince in the kingdom, or in an eternal level and get the total time playing achievements. I don't think i've got another 50 hours in me with this game for that achievement.

I hear ya. In We Love Katamari, the majority of the stages were part of the big world, but you had some like the underwater level and the snow level that weren't part of the game, and added a ton of fun.

The more I play this game the more it makes me hate it.

The first 4 stages went up a little while ago. However this new content is the remaining 3 stages, 200, 200, and 300 points for the last one! So for those of you counting at home, thats 1500 MSP for the 7 stages needed to complete the game, bringing the "budget" priced Katamari game to $58.73 after you factor in those 1500 MSP.

Woese than EA.

My coffin is already on the way. The system stopped functioning as a whole on Friday of last week when it gouged disc #4 to unplayability. I'm just playing XBL titles till they come to take it away.

I did get the content downloaded, but try as I did, I couldn't get it to boot (drive is dead, not some bug in the content) so I don't know how the new levels play.

Worse than EA.

Considering the content is ON the dvd I would agree.

Anybody gotten 120 points on all the levels yet? (Excepting the brand new ones, of course.)

Is it possible? I thought 100 was the highest you could get on timed levels.

120 is the super star finish. It's pretty tough though--I only have 120's on two levels, Uranus and Egg School.

I've gotten 120 in Egg, Uranus and maybe one other(but I really don't think that I do). Too bad I can't check since my system wont load the game.

I've got a feeling that 120 isn't actually obtainable in the other levels besides Uranus and Egg School.

I'll try again to see if I can play it tonight.

Roller Roaster, Cafe Oasis, and Delightful Dirigbile have all been confirmed 120's. I think it's possible on every stage, just difficult.

All of those aren't timed though, they are the objective courses.

Ah, you've got a point. I'll keep investigating.

So I played the new levels. I wasn't all that impressed. I did like that they brought back the guess how big your ball is level(s). I got to play each of the other ones once before I had to stop.

I think i'm going to make sure I get all the achievements for this puppy, push my rolls a bit bigger and call this game done. Not playing it for just under two weeks only had me slide about 20 places in total rollup world rankings. I'm not super worried with the amount of people playing this puppy and my scores falling any farther than they have.

Actually, Papastu, I use you as a benchmark for my high scores. Don't stop playing! :)

So I loved this series and I wanted it for the 360 but I look on amazon to see that it's 70 bucks new or 35 used (not horrible used but whatever). It's and older game so that price tag makes no sense...unless its rare?

Amazon sellers tend to be insane... I've actually come across some games currently in stock at Amazon at $20 that the used sellers have priced at $300.

Sad to say, but eBay is actually a better option.

Gamestop isn't too bad either. You can check their inventory online to see if one near you has it. Only $25.

I bought this when Amazon lowered their price to $20. It took forever, but that was the right price for me.

Bumpity-doo to say that I bought a copy of Beautiful Katamari off one of my friends and I'm satisfied so far. Then again, my copy costs me $20, so it's easier to not feel cheated for playing more of the same. I do like it, and I find that the difficulty level has risen -- there's less space for errors when you roll or else you won't be able to finish in time.

I do find the getting from one platform to the next for level selection a tad annoying -- wish it was possible to just press a shoulder button to rush to the next section instead of making the Prince fly there.

That's pretty sucky re. the DLC that's actually on the disk. Meh to Namco for that.

No button to just shoot you there like We <3 Katamari, but if you hold down X (I think) you shoot around alot faster. It's the only way to move.

I just realized, that's the 2nd time my thread has been merged with another, I really suck at searching things.

Wow, I paid $20 last year at EB Games. They still had copies the last time I went. Anyone charging $70 is insane.

Definitely not as good as the first two games on the PS2. It was disappointing.

The PSP one was tooo easy. There were far too many repeat levels, so once you found the pwnage path, it didn't really matter anymore. First playthroughs for most of the levels for me netted 90+ scores. Still liked it alot. Heck, it was why I got a PSP.
