View Full Version : Does PS3 upconvert PS1/PS2 games?

I'm thinking about getting a 60gb PS3 and was wondering if it upconverts PS1 and PS2 games. The thing is, I've got a real shitty HDTV and it can't display PS1 games when I play them on my PS2 with component video (composite works though). Certain games like Ico won't play either.

Will the PS3 upscale the games so I'd be able to play them on my TV, or will I have the same problem?

Yes it upscales. Will it work? Who knows. It sounds like your TV is having trouble displaying 480p (or even 480i too). If that's the case, I wouldn't bank on the upscaling working with your TV. However, if you're only having trouble with component inputs and you have HDMI that can for sure process a 720p/1080i signal, you may have success.

Yes, by default all games will upscale to at least 480i (and i believe it'll automatically deinterlace them), making all supported PS1 games and low res PS2 games (like Ico) playable on HDTVs over component and HDMI. You can optionally set it to upscale to whatever your maximum resolution is of your TV.

It's one of my favorite little hidden benefits of the PS3, because I was tired of having to swap over to svideo cables on my PS2 to play low res games on my HDTV. Plus, the games look cleaner than hell over HDMI/component :)

Yea, if you're going over component/hdmi and set it to 480p, it can do that. Otherwise, no i mean 480i, which is the minimum I've found it to kick out (which is why I said "at least").

720p. They're the same number of pixels per second, but 720p will give smoother motion, especially in something fast paced (like a racing game!). Use Gran Turismo HD's attract mode as a nice test bed...in 1080i, the background will break up while going through that tunnel thingy.

Then again, your HDTV may just accept a 720p signal and automatically convert it to 1080i (a lot of cheaper HDTVs do this, like my cheapie Sanyo HT30746).

480i isn't "upconverted". That is the standard resolution that all PS1 and PS2 games play at on a SDTV. That is why heybtbm said "you mean 480p". 480p would be upconverted , 480i would be normal resolution.

yikes, i have a Samsung TXS3082WH 30" Wide Slimfit HDTV. i had a upconverting dvd player and i was able to set it for 1080i and 720p and it seemed to be diffrent...

correct me if i'm wrong but they way to set the PS3 to output 720p as opposed to 1080i default is to go into video settings and dissable the 1080i? yhea i know that sounds like a "duh" kinda question but it seems awkward to disable a display mode.

There are lower resolution PS1 games than that.

aren't older TVs that have no more than coax and AV inputs set for max resolution of like 240p or something like that? I know those regular non HD flat screens do up to 480i, but what about older TVs that came out before that? isn't that what a lot of old PS1 games' resolution was set for?

Nah, they can do up to 480i.

The PS1 kicks out a couple of 240p modes, like 640x240p and 320x240p (among others) in addition to comparable 480i resolutions (640x480i, 320x480i), though I don't know of a reliable list of games that use various resolutions (or which games use multiple resolutions throughout the game). That'd be a pretty snazzy undertaking (hi, Dangerboy / Papastu / Playstation Museum / etc ;) ).

Finally, someone pointed out that not every PS1 game ran at the maximum-possible 480i/p resolution that the PS1 was capable of. In fact, very few of them do!

The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Toh Shin Den 3, in the 30fps mode (high-quality textures).

There is also a 60fps mode, with lower-quality textures (and a lower screen resolution).

I believe WipeOut 3 has a similar feature.

Hey...I pointed it out first! I just wasn't very thorough... :p

Anyways, for one game that isn't the max 480i, take a look at Symphony of the Night. That game runs at a magnificent 256x224 resolution--the lowest resolution the PS1 is capable of. (Incidentally, that's one of the reasons the Saturn port of the same game looks stretched; the Saturn's closest resolution is 352x224.)
