View Full Version : Why did the Punch-Out!! series end?
The 1984 arcade game was huge, Super Punch-Out!! (arcade) was big, Mike Tyson's (1987) was a smash, and the SNES one was a big hit as well. Someone please give me one valid reason as to why no version was ever released for the N64, Gamecube, or handhelds? Also, the Wii would be perfect for the series (with its motion-sencing controller), but nothing has been announced. Why?

I was always under the impression that Super Punch Out wasn't a real big hit, not that I think such a thing would stop the big N from churning out another sequel. As far as why.. heh, who knows for sure? They almost certainly have kicked around the idea behind closed doors at some point or another.
If there is a sequel any time soon I'd personally rather it be on the DS than Wii.

I cant exactly remember why, but I read about it in "the ultimate history of video games"
something about mike tyson controversy made them take "Mike Tyson" out of the title of super punch out, and They werent even going to make it but they were to far into production.
If there was a sequel, I wouldnt ant it to use any of these weird controls.

Seemed to me it ceased to be popular when Tyson lost his title. Nintendo tried to market a version of the game with Tyson taken out (at least he was not on the box anymore...I dunno if his character was still in the game), but I don't think it went anywhere.

I wouldn't write off the series as "dead" ...
... Nintendo is certainly aware of the popularity of the Punch-Out series, enough so to have Super Punch-Out included on Fight Night Round 2 for the GameCube. (And the Fight Night series is popular enough in it's own right to warrant Nintendo to take note of public interest in boxing games.)
Punch-Out was released on the VC earlier this year and I bet that Nintendo is using the VC downloads as a "litmus test" for how warm consumers are to certain popular franchises.
I'm sure if and when Super Punch-Out is released that Nintendo will be keeping an eye on the combined purchases of Punch-Out and Super Punch-Out ... and if it sells well enough, we'll see a Wii Sports style Punch-Out game in the future.
They've already demonstrated that the Wiimote hardware works perfectly with that type of game.
Nintendo just loves dragging their feet on bringing back popular franchises.
Personally I'm waiting for next-gen versions of Clu-Clu Land and Gumshoe....
...
...
just kidding.

Little Mac was just announced to be in SSBB so their love affair isn't dead yet.
Hopefully they do release a new 'PunchOut!!' because I think Nintendo really could do the controls right. Hell I like Wii Boxing, so a few tweaks here and there would be all it needed.

It was due to nintendo themselves. The games were popular to continue on to n64 if nintendo decided to.
There were pictures of a pounch-out type game in a Wario Ware mini game title a couple years ago. Nintendo never game up on a punch-out game by doing that.
Nintendo from the n64 era was making bonehead moves from a home game console standpoint or they were having difficults with not having some of their key games delayed Like Donkey kong Country 64. Game Cube era was almost as bad.
I understood why there was no metroid game, but not having a Punch-out game during the n64 era.

I agree with basically everyone else on this topic. That Punch Out! should have another sequal. I dont think the idea is that far-fetched, which is good. Since Punch Out! is available on Nintendo's VC, I would imagine if it does well enough maybe they'll come up with something. Hopefully it would be released for the Wii. Ehh hopefully I'll get a Wii someday.

I dont think it has anything to do with nationalities. I think it has to do with money, because money makes the world go round. And anyway the main character in the newest Grand Theft Auto (I think it's the newest GTA, I havent played them since the original) was African-American, and that is a very main stream game.
Fight Night is probably the closest thing to Punch Out we'll get, wasn't Super Punch Out available as an unlockable on Round 2?

Mike tysons punchout was made before he lost his belt. I remember being at a buddies house while a tyson fight was on tv and just after it we played the game. After the controversy they took him out and replaced his character with someone else, but he fought the same way tyson did in the game.

The controversy of his rape conviction had something to do with it but the real reason he was dropped was the contract with Nintendo had expired. It wasn't renewed (again, probably because of the conviction) and he was replaced with "Mr. Dream" in the NES copies of "Punch-Out!!" later produced.

Now heres a pickle of a question.
Who would win in a boxing match between Mike Tyson and Mr. Dream?

Simple. Mr Dream. Tyson would get disqualified for biting Dream's ear.

I remember reading years ago that the Punch-Out!! series was very popular in the U.S., but not in Japan, which is why Nintendo never developed another sequel. Does anyone know if this is true?

I would guess that a large factor is that Punch-Out has had little impact on Japan. It was always very much a series targeted to a Western audience. Super Punch-Out, in particular, was designed by the Japanese but made to be sold exclusively in the West. It wasn't until many years later that it became available in Japan through the download kiosk services. I don't think there was ever a standard print run for it with packaging and its own unique cartridge. Does anyone who's more familiar with the arcade games know if either of those came out in Japan?
So just like the StarTropics series, which was also made in Japan specifically for Westerners, Nintendo decided to drop it and focus on the games that were big in their own country. Since Nintendo of America is generally not too big on making their own games, they're stuck releasing whatever the Japanese branch happens to choose to make.
I miss this series greatly, and have been waiting for a new entry since Super Punch-Out!
So far it's been two generations and still no sequel and I'm starting to give up hope.

As mentioned above, it did show up in a certain way in Wario Ware :P
But yeah, this is Nintendo... the ones who didn't forget their unique design of the dual screen G&W's and resurrected it only a few years ago in the DS. Those guys are ultra-aware of their entire history and keep it all in their back pocket to pull out when no one expects it. It'll show up again eventually.

If you want to play something on par with Punch Out, try the Victorious Boxers franchise. Pretty fun stuff, with cartoony graphics, and a customizable camera fairly similar to Punch Out's. Available on the PS2, and I believe there was a new Wii? version coming out.

I think boxing is hurting in general so Nintendo has been avoiding doing sequels.

Add me to the list of people hoping that they come out with a Wii version of Punch Out…
This would never happen but a updated version of the original characters (minus Mike Tyson…) would be amazing. Fact to Face with guys like Bald Bull, King Hippo and E. Honda coupled with the Wii controllers would be awesome…

He's not playable, only an assist trophy, but I'm still ecstatic since there was nothing related to Punch-Out in Melee at all.
Also, buy Victorious Boxers. The import-only Hajime no Ippo 2 on PS2 even had Punch-Out characters in it (with slightly altered names)

Oh Hell yes. Never thought of that. They should've made an arcade compilation. Punch-Out, Super Punch-Out and Arm Wrestling.

I have always assumed that they haven't brought out a new one because they can't figure out how to take it 3D. We all know how Nintendo feels the need to take everything and put it 3D so I figured that this wouldn't be any different.

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (1987) was the original release on the NES...Punch-Out!! was the Classic Series reissue (1990).

I'm pretty sure a very rare pre-production version of PunchOut came out for the Famicom as a prize for winning some contest.

Nintendo isn't just going to throw out sequels to all thier popular franchises right away at everybody. They just put out Metroid, then we'll have SSBB. We'll then be seeing Mario Galaxy and Cart. So maybe once all these come out along with maybe a few original titles, nintendo will most likely choose to bring back other frnchises at the right time. They may not even make a new punch out game during this generation, who knows. Maybe Kid Icarus will be the next reincarnation. I believe Punch Out will eventually be back.
