View Full Version : Will The New PS3 Have a Big Impact?

I know that the new $399 PS3 will without doubt raise the PS3's sales. But the last time they lowered the price of the PS3 (the 60 gig dropped from $599to $499) the PS3 still finished last in sales behind both the Wii and 360. As a matter of fact, since launching last November, the PS3 has continually came in last last place sales behind the Wii and 360. So will this new $399 version make that much of a difference, or is it too little too late?

Well, cheaper is always better to the consumer, so many people that have been on the fence will go for it I am sure. The only thing I am really worried about is the BlueRay format losing Paramount and Dreamworks. I know, not game related, but many people also buy the PS3 because is an affordable BR player. If movies in the format start dying out, well, it's just an expensive game system with not that many titles available (yet)

Not much. Still no games, still too expensive.

From what I heard you cannot play PS1/PS2 games with new 40gig model. If this is true, then I don't think it is worth picking up unless you are looking for Blu-ray player.

It's PlayStation backwards compatible, not PS2.

40 GB...60 GB...why is Sony wasting its time with such small hard drives? I remember Ken Kutaragi saying that even a 120 GB hard drive wouldn't be enough for the PlayStation 3:
"We're not going to equip PS3 with a hard drive by default, because no matter how much we put in it, it won't be enough. We've added a 2.5-inch hard drive bay so that users can equip hard drives, such as 80GB or 120GB, even though that's still not enough."

I think the new PS3 can be a huge factor... IF..... Sony advertises the hell out of it. They need to advertise the fact that there is a $399 PS3, as much as Microsoft advertised Halo 3. I'm certain they will launch a pretty significant advertising campaign, but I'm just not sure if they are going to go all out. If they go all out, then this new PS3 could really be a turning point for them. Everybody is focusing on the backwards compatibility issues with the 40 gig unit, but I honestly don't think that's a very big deal. Most of the everyday consumers don't really care that much about BC, and that doesn't even enter their brains about buying a new console. They are simply looking for the hot Xmas gift. Putting Spiderman 3 on Blu Ray in the box is a pretty sweet bonus too. And, unless I'm mistaken, this unit will also qualify for the 5 free Blu Ray movies deal. That's a pretty nice deal. Most will say that the PS3 has no software, and I'm not going to argue that, but eventually that is going to change. Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted are two really huge aces in the hole that Sony has this holiday season.
To me, this is the first real attack by Sony, in terms of really going after the Xbox 360, and trying to take some of Microsoft's pie away from them. When you can pay an extra $50, and get a real deal Blu Ray player, that is a pretty compelling argument. The 360 still has the games in spades, but that advantage won't last forever.
They've released 5 different versions of the console within it's first year, this just seems like a desperate attempt for sales. The funny thing is, they still play the BC compatible video in the kiosk displays. People are interested in BC for any console, I've sold countless amounts of DS's by telling the customer "It's like having two systems in one!"
It might not be an important feature, but it is a nice one to have, especially for tightwad customers. It was also apart of Sony's PS3 campaign, claiming that it's the first console ever to do such a thing:roll:.

I know one person who is buying one at $399 just to play Blu-Ray movies. He doesn't care about the games at all, and likely won't buy any.

Is the PS3 still the cheapest Blu-Ray player on the market? I wonder how much cheaper a PS3 with all game-playing functionality stripped out would be...
Toshiba is rumored (http://www.tvpredictions.com/hdprice101807.htm) to be readying a $199 HD-DVD player for the holidays.

Ditto...
I honestly don't think anyone's going to give a damn... People who want a Bluray player already have a Bluray player, and most of us who want a PS3 but haven't bought one yet are waiting for the games to arrive... They're selling 60GB units here for $469 (that's about $475US LOL ) and nobody's buying. Technically, it's a great deal for the technology, but they can't give these things away...

The "no games" argument hasn't really been valid for a while now. It's just senseless trolling at this point.
Price, on the other hand.....yea. $400 is a lot more reasonable and a lot easier to swallow for a game console / BD player. If you're buying it for BDs, don't forget you're going to need to shell out another $25 for the remote (using the SIXAXIS as a remote control sucks). You may also want to make sure you order it all online or find some other way to avoid paying the sales tax, because that shit adds up real fucking quick.

Actually the "no games" argument is very valid. Ratchet and Clank might come out next week, and Uncharted might be coming out near Thanksgiving, but we are talking about the here and now. And when people mention "no games", they are talking about exclusives. There really is only 2 big time exclusives to the PS3's name so far. Resistance and Motorstorm. Earlier this year, VF5 could have been added to that group, but in a few weeks it comes out for the 360, so that's no longer one of them. When 2007 comes and goes, there will still only be 4 compelling PS3 releases:
Resistance
Motorstorm
Ratchet and Clank Future
Uncharted: Drakes Fortune
Those are the only 4 games that make any non PS3 owner a bit jealous.

Don't forget Warhawk. It's still the best PS3 multiplayer title out right now.

Holy crap. Some one figured out how to sell me a PS3. That post was the first time I was even remotely interested.

Even then I'm still not jealous. Give me Tekken 6, RE 5 and Killzone 2 and we'll talk. For that price I'm not sold for just 3 games. I can wait.

This price drop will only serve to sell more 60GB models so people can get the PS2 compatibility while it exists.
