Game Gear Screen Question- normal?

I just dug out my game gear after being in storage for years. I notice when I play a game and there is any white (or bright image) against a black background you can see it carry on faintly in a vertical direction. For example, with a blue sega logo on a black background I can see a a lighter area extending above and below the logo. I was just wondering if this was normal and part of the poor quality screen or if the screen has started to go after so many years.

This is normal, because of the nature of 'passive matrix' displays like the one in the Game Gear.

I figured it had to do with the nature of the LCD screen, but I asked because my nomad also has a passive matrix LCD and the effect I described is much less pronounced. I'm pretty sure the Nomad's screen is of much higher quality though. :)
