Megadrive: Golden Axe III

Being that I just purchased a modded Sega Genesis 2 console that will allow native Japanese Megadrive cart playback (it will be on the way soon) and that I did not have any Japanese Megadrive games, I just purchased "Golden Axe III" on ebay.

I have always been a big fan of Golden Axe....many memories attached to that game for me. I never did play the third installment however, most likely due to the fact that it was never released here in the USA :) I read the review, and it seems pretty decent. There are complaints of the graphics and sounds in the review, but that is just one person's opinion.

Who else has this game? What do you think of it? Is it a worthy third installment? I'm personally kind of psyched to add this to my collection :)

I've got Golden Axe III for the Megadrive, but it's a pirate cart. It won't work in a US Genesis if you've just expanded the cartridge port, the circuit board has to be modified too.

I'm pretty sure that Golden Axe III was released in the arcades here, I dimly remember playing it at a bowling alley. I've never understood why Golden Axe I and II are lauded but III is considered bad. They're basically all the same game. III has more characters, better graphics, and (in my oppinion at least) more interesting levels.

I believe it is also on the Genesis greatest hits that is on PS2.Yes, it is, and it's pretty cool. Which reminds me, I have to go back and finish it one of these days... :) According to the info on that disc, GA III was only available through the Sega Channel in the US.

I remeber playing it back in the day and being a bit disapointed (although I liked one oof the newer charecters) it had branching paths if I recall correctly.

but honestly after playing the abysmal tg16 version of the first golden axe, I look at the third one on genesis with new light :-)

A lot of reviews put this as the worst in the series, but it's my personal fav.

Love that branching system.
