I just read (somewhere) that Wii will soon have hundreds of Sega Genesis games. That sounds like a good reason to buy a Wii.
So.
How does this work?
Is there a monthly fee?
Can I use a plain-jane phoneline (56K) to access the downloadable games?
What other games does it have?
Do I need extra hardware?

How does this work? You connect to the internet via wi-fi or usb dongle
Is there a monthly fee? No, just pay points per game.
Can I use a plain-jane phoneline (56K) to access the downloadable games? No. Never. That is sooooo 1995.
What other games does it have? Hundreds. Check this thread: http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=95112
Do I need extra hardware? Not if you go Wi-Fi. USB dongle can be attached to a PC that is hardlined to a LAN.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe Nintendo recently adjusted how long it takes to time out on their servers where its now possible for people to connect via the USB wifi adapter through a PC online with a 56k modem.

56K modems didn't exist in 1995. The max speed was 28.8.

Is it easier to connect a Wii if I upgrade to DSL?

Same process as noted above, only a faster speed.

Sorry, 1996. So I was off by 1 year. You got my point.

28.8K? Yeah, maybe for a privileged few. In 1995, my new modem tore through the internet at a blazing 2.4K.

I thought I was fast tearing it up with 14.4Kbps in 1995.

It really isn't difficult to access the internet with the Wii. I personally have the official Nintendo USB Wi-fi Adapter. In order to use it, you connect your pc with an ethernet cable to your modem (which you should be doing anyway to get internet to your computer). The USB adapter takes that internet connection and creates a wireless signal for your Wii to pick up. I think it is like $20 or $30.
The Shop Channel games aren't too expensive, either. NES games are $5 (imports are $6), SNES and Genesis games are $8, Neo Geo games are $9 I believe, and N64 games are $10 (imports for it are $12 I believe).

Okay. I'm an idiot, so tell me exactly what I need:
- 56K modem (already have)
- Wii
- USB Wi-Fi gadget (is that this?) - http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Wi-Fi-USB-Connector/dp/B000MXMNG4/
Anything else?
Sorry, 1996. So I was off by 1 year. You got my point. Hmmm.... I thought it 1999; it came earlier than I realized.
I bought my very first IBM-compatible PC in 1997 that was 28.8.
It died and I got 33.6 in 1998.
I didn't get 56K until 2000 (and still use it even today, since DSL is too expensive).

I also read that TurboCD games are now available, starting with Gate Of Thunder (http://www.vgden.com/cdrom.htm?gth) !

Well, as far as I know, you have to have a DSL internet connection. Someone mentioned earlier that you MIGHT be able to use a 56k connection now, I have no clue about that. As far as I know you can only use high speed internet to connect. And, yes, that is the correct USB adapter I was referring to earlier.
Also, DSL really isn't expensive anymore. I pay $30 for my internet. Then again, it might also be different in different areas.

Same here. I pay around 40 dollars a month for DSL, and I'm a student. (Granted I need it for class but still)

Yeah, and as a student you HAVE to have internet. I am the same. I could just go to the library to use the internet instead, but it is way more convenient to use at it at home for help with writing papers like getting sources and similar things.

I don't know about hundreds of genesis games on the vc. I think you are more looking at closer to a 100 to 120 games at best then hundreds of genesis games unless North America will have a good amount of imports. The problem is the lack of licence games and sega having some obsecure 3rd parties that nolonger exist. Genesis was back time licensed game giant like Disney games, sports games, and Michael Jackson's game.
You are dealing with some of the 3rd party games are also on the snes. Those games are more likely to go to the snes instead the genesis.
At this time there is very little of 3rd party games on the genesis after 37 Sega Genesis games as this week. The only 3rd party games that will be coming soon for sure is Data East, Capcom and Namco. I saw Atomic Runner on the vc coming soon list on vc-reviews.com. I think there will be total of 5or 6 Data East games that could go to the vc. Namco has a total of 9 genesis only games. there are 5 more Capcom games that will be on the vc. 4 of them will be games that Sega got the rights to publish the console version of the game.
There is no Komami, and Taito games on the virtual game console for nthe genesis. Those are 3 big time supporters with genesis only games. It may change as Sega already completed the following Genesis series on the vc: Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, and ToeJam & Earl. I know the Columns and Ecco series are 1 game away from being done on the vc. I think the shinobi series is another one with one my game since Revenage of Shinobi has movie characters. That will open up what genesis games will be released in the future.

Yep, they are. I read there will be a total of 15 Turbo cd games on the vc.

Lump me in with the privleged few then. By 1995 my board was running two or three lines, all of them 28.8k.

I was running on 28.8k until about 2004. Than Halo 2 came out and all hell broke loose. I then discovered Xbox live and havent looked back. I have to say that I put quite a bit of time in my Dreamcast back in the day.
