Description:
The members of S.T.A.R.S. have now returned safely. It was revealed that the medical corporation "Umbrella" has been performing biological experiments. The top executives of Umbrella were immediately arrested, and the company was completely shut down. Now referred to as "The Umbrella Incident", media around the world has made aware their biological experiments and conspiracies of terrorism. The nightmare was thought to be over until...

Raccoon City was showing signs of abnormality once again. It began with a skin disease. The citizens demanded an investigation, as they suspected it was related to the Umbrella Incident. The government assured them that the case was closed and the skin disease was unrelated. But within a few days the disease spread and hundreds of lives were lost. Then it happened…the dead began to rise and a new nightmare was just beginning.

Elza Walker, 19, a female college is accepted to Raccoon University and heads off to Raccoon City on her motorcycle not knowing what is about to face her. Crashing her bike, she manages to evade zombies on the street and reaches the Raccoon Police Department. But it wasn’t the safe haven she expected as the entrance gate is about to be crushed down and policeman zombies are squeezing in.

Leon Scott Kennedy, 21, has just finished police training and is now a rookie cop. With all of the trouble on the streets, Leon waits for rescue teams on the police department helicopter pad. But as his comrades succumb to the zombies with each minute passing by, he decides to find an escape route to ensure his own safety.

Can you survive the horror?
PlayStation Museum Factoid:
In an interview with former Capcom Digital Studios' Art Director, Glen Schofield, we found out that Capcom held a contest to re-name Bio Hazard, the original Japanese title. An employee at Capcom Digital Studios submitted the winning entry "Resident Evil."

Exclusive PlayStation Museum Review:
Eleven years after development started, The PlayStation Museum jumped at the chance to kill zombies in what is regarded as the last official build of Capcom’s Resident Evil 1.5. Resident Evil 1.5, also known as Resident Evil 2 Prototype amongst many hardcore gaming enthusiasts, was shelved when development was approximately 80% complete in favor of a re-design to what ultimately became the hugely popular release of Resident Evil 2. Resident Evil 1.5 contains vastly improved graphics, character design, and smarter enemy AI over its predecessor. This time simple barriers do not stop the hordes of zombies: if there is a small opening under a door, the zombies will crawl through and stop at nothing to get at you.

The game features two characters: Elza Walker and Leon Scott Kennedy. Elza Walker is slightly easier as the zombies are fewer but she starts off with less ammunition. Leon Scott Kennedy begins with more ammunition but the amount of zombies and degree of difficulty have increased. During the re-design, Elza Walker was removed entirely from the game and replaced with Claire Redfield.

The graphics in Resident Evil 1.5 are nothing less than stellar and truly sets the ambiance for the game. The zombies are in full force and vary in size and style: there are fat zombies in police uniforms (ate too many donuts?), zombies in tattered clothing, and even zombified K-9 dogs. The zombies have been programmed with improved AI and attitude! Not only will they crawl under openings or open automatic doors, but shoot at them and they will get angry and make a dash for you. Make sure you have enough bullets and room to run before shooting a zombie. To make the game more difficult, the zombies are relentless and are not keen on giving up on dinner. If shot with a pistol, the zombies will be stunned but will have no problem getting back up and having their way with you. A zombie can only truly die when their head is blown off.

Resident Evil 1.5 sports some of the best Resident Evil boss character designs. The game includes a giant powerful mutated zombie that will grab a large pipe and club you to death, an inhuman spider-like zombie that spits out venom or will tear your limbs off if you get too close, and even a large mutated ape which will grab onto the ceiling and swing around to avoid you while pummeling you to death.

Although the retail release of Resident Evil 2 received near perfect scores and quickly became one of the PlayStation’s best selling games, it is difficult to understand why Capcom decided to re-design Resident Evil 1.5. The game has all of the qualities of the original Resident Evil but intensified. The PlayStation Museum has spent more time playing Resident Evil 1.5 than we have with the retail version of Resident Evil 2. If there are any faults with Resident Evil 1.5, it would have to be with the difficulty level but this could have been easily tweaked. The PlayStation Museum is confident that Resident Evil 1.5 would have received a glowing 5 star review and become a worthy addition to the PlayStation library had it been released.
