I recently bought a nice white duo-r. But i've been to busy playing final fantasy IX. I almost finished that so I can invest some time with my duo-r now. I heard that the pc-engine is one of the best consoles for shooters. To be honest i've never played a shooter before.. Well I tried ikaruga once but I got raped badly lol. So what are some good starters to get into this genre?

Well, for Hucards, here are some recommendations:

Gunhed
Salamander
Twinbee
Star Soldier
Super Star Soldier
Soldier Blade
Dead Moon
Final Soldier
Gradius
Parodius

I strongly recommend Gunhed. If your Duo is modded, you can buy the US version of it much cheaper. It is called "Blazing Lazers"

Great! Thanks for your help. My duo isn't modded though. I will look into that later.

I like Terra Cresta II, but it's expensive. It has a cool caravan mode (get as many points as possible) with different time settings :)

Many PC Engine shooters are pretty darn hard (this is from a "normal" shooter player, not those hardcore shmup fans that think just about everything is easy). Since it's an older system, though, you don't have to worry about much in the way of "bullet hell" shooters.

I second Detana! TwinBee. It's a great game and very well-balanced, especially in comparison to its quarter-munching arcade counterpart. It might even be slightly too easy from my perspective, but it's perfect for someone starting out.

Mr. Heli is the bee's knees. It can be pretty hard, but it's not too bad. Think Air Fortress on the NES.

Very cheap Hu-Card import.

Blazing Lazers is essential though. Get that one immediately and it's not even that hard.

Rayxanber II is a VERY tough shooter game to start with. The game is ok in my mind, you should check out the other games that I have mentioned, they are much easier in terms of difficulty.

I've been on a huge Compile shooter kick lately. Spriggan is great and Blazing Lazers is definitely one of their best, maybe even *THE* best.

It's a bit sad to me that this style of shooter has disappeared. Shooters these days rarely have multiple weapons or if they do, you just select your weapon/character at the beginning and keep the same through the entire game. The idea of being able to choose from among a large number of weapons during the game is really a lot of fun and introduces all kinds of great situations. The fact the the weapons look so cool in Compile's shooters--and especially Blazing Lazers--only makes it better.

So yeah, I definitely recommend Blazing Lazers/Gunhed and Spriggan. Also Space Megaforce, MUSHA, Power Strike, GunNac, Robo Aleste, etc.

Oh yeah, and Lords of Thunder isn't pricey, and it is not too hard either. If your pockets are deep, you can always track down a copy of Sylphia.

But the game, right now, is expensive for sure.

Sylphia is kinda worth it. Oh yeah, if you ever get an Arcade Card Duo, you can get the legendary shooter, Sapphire. That is an incredible shooter, but extremely pricey.

I'd have gladly paid for the bootleg of Sapphire. Anyhow, Super Darius is a good one, and the pc engine also has R-type I and II, along with Raiden. While not stellar shooters, still something to get you in the shmup boat. I still recommend Gunhed, it was the first shooter I ever played, and I continue to play it over 10 years later.

Doesn't the the bootleg of Sapphire still run about $60-120.00? And is the boot a real pressed CD, or CD-R?

Yes, one of my friends has one, and it is the most well-made bootleg I've ever seen.

I wouldn't pay too much more than $50 for it, but it is worth every penny. I have one and yes, it is an actual pressed CD with full documentation. It is the most professional "bootleg" I have ever seen; so much so that I consider it a "reprint" personally. No shame here.

Same here. I bought mine for about $50 and I consider it more like a great 'reprint' than a cheap 'bootleg' or horrible CD-R copies as we sometimes see on Ebay.

Naw a bootleg of Sapphire will run ya just $60.00+

I have a copy and in no way did it cost me $120.00

You do have people that try to charge that much for one,but it isn't worth a $100.00+

That's good. But I figure the whole point of the bootleg is to scam people into thinking it's a real copy, where $100-200.00 would be a great price.

Even if I do get ahold of one, I'd still need the arcade card.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Image Fight. It's a really good conversion, but can get challenging at times. If you still have a big wallet, you can get the sequel, Image Fight II. However, I heard it is far more challenging than many of the old shooters.
